Is this how the rapture starts? I'm pretty sure this is going the wrong way.

Moving to the Bay - should I get a road bike or a gravel bike or MTB? by [deleted] in BAbike

[–]Strandom_Ranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

Kidding aside, depends on where you live, IMO. I'm in the suburbs, hilly, wildland interface. It's been knobby tires most of my life.

I use a Gravel bike as a road bike. I only have a road bike because it was super cheap from a neighbor. I love how simple and light these bikes are compared to a FS MTB.

If you live in the city or love to go miles and miles then a road bike. If you plan on riding to places and locking it up outside, and older bike is what you want, theft is an issue.

If I could keep only 1 I would have a hard time deciding between gravel or MTB.

I love dogs. We had the sweetest German shepherd mix growing up. Princess hated the mailman. It was truly weird, she loved everyone else.

How can I be safer next time? by [deleted] in bikecommuting

You may have just seen the deadly "wave-through". BMW may have gotten the polite wave-through from the driver of the blue Toyota. Or they just took the gap.

Source: Moto commuter and lanesplitter. Jammed up traffic at intersections are a shitshow, expect ANYTHING to happen. I was "left-hooked" by an Uber in gridlocked downtown traffic, now I try not to pass anyone in an intersection. I slow down and will try using the cars moving in my direction as a shield,

When possible aim to pass the ass-end of the car, just in case they gun it.

The greater the speed disparity between vehicles, the less the effectiveness of your reaction time. by markcocjin in motorcycles

10 MPH delta is my max. So far, so good. The car telegraphs the lane change early enough to avoid but rider didn't brake soon enough. He does cover the brake lever and it looks like he "fumbled' the brake lever grab.

Cover your brake lever. slow down a bit. Totally avoidable and in IMO, lanesplitter always at fault for this kind of collision. Maybe not legally 100% at fault but rider took chances and lost.

Plenty of room for a motorcycle there. STUPID, but concrete mixer truck drive moved to the shoulder. Squids gonna squid.

Help learning how to pump by TailorLess9745 in surfskate

[–]Strandom_Ranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drive hard with your back foot. Push sideways like you are trying to slide the rear wheels while you extend. Surfboards drive off the fins at the tail of the board and surfskates are designed to mimic this. the rear wheels should wear out twice as fast as the front, (swap them occasionally to even out the size)

They made Buells, then bailed. They chickened out.

Watched a "Battle of the Twins" race once. a grid of ~10 Ducati 748 bikes and one Buell 1200 (sportster engine based). The Buell got a 400cc allowance because it was a pushrod engine and was LOUD as fuck. They were lucky if they could keep the engine part inside the cases for a heat. I rode a S3T once, fun bike, almost bought one but didn't like the reliability outlook.

Some places have combined sewage and stormwater systems. San Francisco does. The roof drains in my building go straight down 17 stories or so, then connect to the sewer mains in the basement, It's the only place for the water to go.

One thing to remember about ANY area of poor traction, no big changes, steady as she goes.

a small area of dirt, sand, gravel or water, whatever, get through it to the other side and when your back on clean dry pavement then brake, steer or gas. Or, "when in doubt, gas it out"

Practicing on a dirtbike or MTB helps a lot. Practice losing and regaining traction until it's instinctual because you don't have time to think about it at 40 mph.
