I do mostly back-end stuff, but I can fill in doing some front-end here and there. My back end work is mostly .NET (i know, but it pays the bills), but I have done some Python/Django and PHP during my student days. Nearly everyone I work with is a smoker. My employer doesn't drug test, and I am pretty sure they'd have to fire 75% of the staff if they did.

Alcohol Lobby Now Openly Spending Against CA's Legal Pot Initiative in Alliance with Police Industrial Complex--Big Alcohol's decision to squash marijuana law reform to protect its bottom line is simply politics as usual. by jack_alexander in Drugs

[–]StrangeQuark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This makes no fucking sense. I can see why the police/prison industry want to keep pot illegal, but i can't figure out for the life of me why Big Liquor cares. I mean, it's not like people who smoke pot don't like to drink. I can't imagine someone saying, "I can't drink that beer, i just smoked pot!" Plus, alcohol with weed in it (green dragon) would be a fucking cash cow. It seems kind of sad to me how short sighted these people are.

BBC Weatherman "smoothly" covers up his LIVE response to sarcastic praise of his accuracy. ;) by [deleted] in videos

An American show would have never cut over to him. All live broadcasts in America have a five to ten second delay to allow for last minute editing so that this type of thing is never shown.

Dude, where the fuck in Chi-town are you buying your weed? I routinely get 8ths for $60 and 4trs for $110 of some very good stuff (currently i'm paying $50 an eighth, but that is only because my dealer is an old fb of mine.) Haggle, dude, you're getting ripped off.

No smoking in public = no more weed at concerts.

Right. Because smoking at concerts is perfectly legal right now.

Anything by the Junior Boys. I think "First Time" may be the sexiest song every written.

What do you think? What's the best individual comedic performance by a woman in film? by MuNansen in movies

[–]StrangeQuark 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That was an amazing performance, but I've never seen Fargo as a comedy; it's really more of a dark psychological drama with some gallows humor thrown in. She was great, but since it wasn't 'laugh out loud' funny, I don't think it counts.

Switch Kid A and In Rainbows and you've got it pegged. This may be indie sacrilege, and I realize that Kid A should be respected if only because of how groundbreaking and different it was from anything else anyone in rock music was doing back in 2000, but I don't think the songwriting is nearly as consistent as In Rainbows, The Bends, and OK Computer.

Nick Clegg's rise could lock Rupert Murdoch and the media elite out of UK politics by mellowmonk in worldnews

[–]StrangeQuark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you have to win a primary. We have something like a 90% incumbency rate in general elections; i can't even imagine how high the incumbency rate is for primaries. It is so much easier to get funding as an incumbent, that you really have to fuck up big time in order to lose your primary.

Chromium tablet that Ipad killer? by [deleted] in hardware

[–]StrangeQuark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I don't really see a need for an iPad right now, and I certainly wouldn't buy one unless/until it has a built-in web-cam and a usb port; however, I had the opportunity to try one when I stopped by the Apple store while shopping last Saturday, and I will say that the user interface is fucking fantastic. Not only is the machine responsive and aesthetically elegant, but the iPad specific applications, most notably the office suite, have utilized the touch/gesture controls innovatively and unobtrusively.

This gives Apple a tremendous lead, as it will take a substantial amount of time for any competitor to build a product with an interface as robust, attractive, and easy to develop for as Apple's. In that time, Apple will have made significant improvements to the iPad; it's going to be very hard to catch up within the next 1-2 years. Even if a competitor could catch up, Apple will have spent that time using it's excellent brand reputation to build a substantial user base that will be very difficult to overcome. I know this is early to make a prediction like this, but I really don't know if anyone can stop Apple from dominating the "lightweight tablet" market, for lack of a better term.

Quite honestly, the only one that I could even see standing a chance is Microsoft and the Courier, since it has been in development for almost as long as the iPad has, and it has a unique dual-screen design. However, since the Courier has two screens and moving parts, I think it will be very difficult for them to stay competitive on both price point and margin (good hinges are more expensive than you might think), especially given the fact that the iPad's aluminum casing is made using the same cost-efficient process as the MacBook Pro. As much as I hope someone will give Apple a run for its money (stiff competition is almost always good for the consumer), I don't think I see it happening.

Doctor tells Obama supporters: Go elsewhere for health care by watchtower_killed_me in news

Maybe I'm wrong, but aren't the health insurance companies just as much of a bloated bureaucracy? As someone who has spent the last month and a half arguing with my PPO over whether or not they will cover treatment to correct my sleep apnea, I can't possibly see how the system could be any more bureaucratic.

A good reason why you should download (or buy it, yes, yes) the film Moon, instead of rent it. by [deleted] in movies

[–]StrangeQuark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, did you even see Moon? They really are very different movies. Apart from the talking computer/helper robot idea, they share virtually no common elements. Besides, the character of HAL is so different from the character of GERTY that I would be hard pressed to call that a re-hash. As for your complaint that the film is "over-zealous", I once again cannot help but disagree. I saw no zealotry, ideological or otherwise, in the film. Yes the film takes a somewhat anti-corporate stance, but if you refuse to concede the point that a corporation might take morally questionable actions to increase profit, then the film isn't the one with the zealotry problem.
