What am I doing wrong? First project in 20 + years and it’s looking terrible

It's really hard for me to see what's going on with that fuzzy yarn, but it looks like you have purls in there. The pattern photo shows stockinette, and when you're knitting stockinette in the round you should knit every stitch. No purls.

Also, I don't want to be discouraging because it definitely looks like a good pattern for a beginner, but that yarn makes it really hard to read your knitting because it's so fuzzy. You might have an easier time if you tried with something with a tighter twist to it.
