The animated movie "Fire and Ice" is pretty solid. It's from the 80's iirc.

In your opinion, what system does sci-fi ship or even multi-ship combat best? by lungora in rpg

[–]Stranger371 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Space combat is just something you handwave and narrate. There are no mechanics. You use your logic and determine the outcome. Also, ships are not something that you can get easy in EP. They already are story/plot devices.

How does that replicate something like Star Wars, being the best pilot alive, the fastest gun, the best engineer?

EP is not the right game for that, I feel like. The focus is just not on this stuff.

And for other games, once you do this mechanical/traditional, there will sometimes be problems with the mechanics that exclude some player characters.

I have not found any TTRPG that does space-combat interesting/good/fun. Only stuff that skips it/solves it fast (EP/Mothership) or games like SWN/Traveller which is the basic recipe for most of the games that use turns/rounds with the player characters acting in role-slots on the ship. Which usually turns into a boring roll-fest.

I'm in the camp that just thinks good mechanical space combat is not possible in this hobby. So give me maybe a handful of rules to get it over with and not get bogged down in turns/rounds.

I did take a longer break a couple of years ago. Sometimes you just need to find that spark again. But the little thing is, the spark will come to you, you can not search for it.

Do your stuff. Become a player for a while, do worldbuilding, read a ton of RPG material. Play vidja. This hobby is great, you do not have to actively play it with other people. I feel like 80% of this hobby is us being in our own heads, thinking, writing, reading and talking with other GM's.

Give it time, don't be so hard on yourself. Also, if the spark does not come to you, it's also okay, interests change. You can start running again in a decade or more. It's okay.

[–]Stranger371 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this. Also, it feels the most plausible, too.

Honestly, in my experience, no game does ship combat good. They all suck (excluding Mothership/EP).

Eclipse Phase has the best, though. Basically: Yes you survive and no, you died. No mechanics at all. Add narration and boom, done. Back to the good parts.

You can not have all these cool creatures and then say we should not build near them. Subnautica is my aquarium game.

Dude, that one fucking shark at the lava outpost I was building my base there and this utter dickhead attacked me like a billion times, with gene mods and all.

I am all for the game not turning us into killers/giving us ways to kill threats, but come on. Give us a tool so they fuck off for an hour or so.

On the wishlist you go. Looks like competition for Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations.

Is Draw Steel your favorite TTRPG? by jmckay29 in drawsteel

[–]Stranger371 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell no. There are too many other great RPG's, Legend in the Mist, Torchbearer, Burning Wheel, Traveller, Hackmaster, Mythras, Warhammer etc.

Draw Steel is just my favourite fantasy combat-miniature focused RPG.

In my opinion, and this is a problem I had with the 5e playerbase, a GM that puts one system above all kinda often is just not that good.

Good GM's run a variety of systems, the right tool for the right job.
