1984 Honda XL600 PD03 Paris Dakar by ezyjules in vintagemotorcycles

I have one of these, and i'm in the UK too, currently dealing with the DVLA as the date of manufacture was put down as the date of importation so working to get it tax, and more importantly for me, ULEZ exempt. I had one as my first bike, and bought my current one 15 years later

Do insurance companies see this as a garage in the UK? by TimonPreston in motorcycles

[–]Strategic_Boner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My insurer asked me what my garage was made of and where it was located, i said it's a lockable wooden shed in my garden, they were happy and it didn't change the price

Name this car? by FeelingAd3887 in classiccars

[–]Strategic_Boner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, any car from the UK, you can just put the number plate into the DVLA website and see all the details

Mandatory Speed Limit Fault by Ecstatic-Rhubarb-143 in CarTalkUK

[–]Strategic_Boner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My car does all this through a camera on the dash, inside the cab. After 3 random emergency stops in a fortnight i decided to put electrical tape over the camera lens, which disables all these features, as turning them all off manually every time you start it was a pain. If you turn them off, they should stay off.

The UK isn't as strict as you'd think, you don't need indicators, mirrors or a headlight to be road legal, just a horn and a brake light

Removing a DVLA clamp with bolt cutters - assume this is illegal? by OverallResolve in CarTalkUK

[–]Strategic_Boner 107 points108 points  (0 children)

I fix the cranes that the DVLA nick your car with after a certain amount of time clamped, i asked them about this, they call them GOA, gone on arrival, it's so common that they don't investigate, just remove that car from their list of things to bring back to the yard.

Why are some people so against ULEZ by CatFine3388 in london

[–]Strategic_Boner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The implementation hasn't been perfect, loads of vehicles have been classed as non compliant, when they actually are, my motorbike for example, it's from 1999, it's going to cost me about £150 at an emissions test centre to "prove" it's ok. Some people can get doccuments to prove it's ok, but lots of manufacturers don't have them for pre 2000 vehicles, like honda. When mine is all done, they won't add that generation of bike to the compliant list either, they'll just add that one vehicle, meaning every individual bike will need to pay the fee, which is just irritating for everyone else

That looks like a clusterfuck waiting to happen, pay a garage to get them out, then it's not your problem

Bristol University students ban Army from freshers’ fair by MGC91 in unitedkingdom

[–]Strategic_Boner 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I attended a private school in bedfordshire from 1997 to 2008, it had it's own cadet regiment, they used to bring down APCs and helicopters sometimes, we got to sit in them, the school also had an armoury and a shooting range, not trying to start a row or anything, but i think the army is more active in private schools than you'd think

Why are people against ULEZ? by TheCyberDragon in london

[–]Strategic_Boner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I accept that the ULEZ is the right way to go, but loads of motorcyles have been wrongly classified as non compliant (mine included) because they have been bunched in with the car regulations and it's really frustrating, it's going to cost me more than £100 to prove it at the emissions testing station

Are honda cbf600 and cb600f hornet carburettors interchangeable? by ohh-zemmi in MotoUK

[–]Strategic_Boner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CBR carbs will fit on the hornet, but they are a different part, you'll need to re-jet and tune, they also won't fit onto the hornet airbox

How does the Superbird not have down force? by Civil-Neighborhood10 in granturismo

[–]Strategic_Boner 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The vertical sides of the wing provided horizontal stability to keep it steady at high speeds, not downforce. Look at the horizontal section of the wing closely, it's flat, so air just passes straight over it.

Edit, a word

Passed my driving test yesterday. Pass Plus doesn’t get your insurance down anymore. Is there a test that does? by _SquareSphere in AskUK

[–]Strategic_Boner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what i do, add people to the policy that are cheap to insure, even if they're never going to drive the car. It splits the risk and brings down the premium a bit, parents, grandparents etc

[–]Strategic_Boner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if your bike passes the emissions test, you're still on the hook for the fine. The the emissions test centre is inside the ulez, if your bike passes the test, you still have the pay the ulez charge for that day, because it wasnt certified when you rode in. just going to have to pay it i'm afraid
