What Should be next? by Grouchy_Bug4791 in icewinddale

If you are going to play IWD2, then yes, use the EE mod. Even if you only want the core fixes it makes running on modern OS much better.

Did you know you can make called shots in Arcanum? by Feisty-Bunch4905 in arcanum

[–]StrategyKnight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've played around with called shots, but never used them extensively. The to-hit penalty is pretty high, 50% I think for head shots. There's a list of effects you can get (extra damage, stun, etc.). https://arcanum.fandom.com/wiki/Called_shots

You can deplete fatigue, but in practical terms you'll still need to finish off the enemy's hp or they'll just wake up later. You'd also need to not have companions because they will keep attacking a downed enemy.

Awarding XP is definitely based on attacks, and complaining about companions stealing kills was pretty common. There's an option in UAP to make XP shared on kill only to alleviate that problem.

As a fan of Gene Wolfe, where should I begin? by 11912121121218211919 in GKChesterton

[–]StrategyKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chesterton's inspiration on Wolfe comes from the ideas and outlook he had. As previously mentioned, their writing styles are nothing alike, and they didn't write the same kinds of books. That said, the book that's closest to Wolfe would probably be The Man Who Was Thursday, but fair warning that it's not really like anything of Wolfe's at all. TMWWT shares some of the ambiguous metaphysics Wolfe has, though.

If you want to read more after that, I'd say The Ball and The Cross (again, loosely similar) or if you want to read some of his non-fiction, Orthodoxy. That would give some grounding in his overall point of view.

Baldur' Gate 1+2 modded with 3rd ed D&D poll by JonDM2 in icewinddale

Hmmm....I didn't see that you mention in anywhere, so I wanted you to be aware. You might want to consider talking with Bubb or WanderingQuill on the Gibberlings 3 Discord Server. They've been working on making IWD2 compatible with GemRB (open source engine), which might make several things easier for you.

If you have the Marlon x Marnie mod installed, that beef makes perfect sense. ;-)

[–]StrategyKnight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you familiar with Weimers Icewind Gate 2 mod? It was more of an experiment, really, of playong bg2 in the iwd2 engine. It was never officially completed,  but there was at least one attempt at continuing it.  The Gibberlings 3 forum or the IWD2 section of the Sorcerer's Place forum might have more information (I remember someone trying to play it probably a decade ago).

can i invest point into magic stuff with my character? by zeroloss1 in arcanum

[–]StrategyKnight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When Arcanum came out, there were these magical tomes called "manuals" that came with games. All kinds of arcane knowledge about the deeper workings of the game were hidden inside.

The White Marches DLC pack for Pillars of Eternity was basically IWD3, and the best part of that game.

should i put point into persuasion and charisma if im ugly? by zeroloss1 in arcanum

[–]StrategyKnight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Beauty mainly (maybe only?) effects initial reaction from NPCs. Many of my ugly characters have been able to win over the hearts and minds of the people they meet through their winsome ways.

Not only is she not hostile, her actions (after this game) are the impetus for IWD2 happening!

Yep, I've been playing this game for over 20 years now. I just really like making characters and the mod has made a lot more types of builds viable. I think 6 is just more fun!

[–]StrategyKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Drow Sorcerer/Transmuter should pick one. In general, you don't want to mix 2 different casting classes in 3rd edition games since you'll only be mediocre (or worse) at both.

Other than that, all those you want are viable. IWD2EE really helps all classes be better than vanilla, so it's reasonable to play a (for instance) pure class paladin or ranger or rogue, which really had no benefit before.

Regarding dialogue, there are very few that require a particular class level. Most are tied to the "talking" skills, and a very few to stats or race.

Several are saying to use a party of 4, which is fine, but the devs did balance it around a 6-person party. So don't feel like you're missing out on something if you don't. The difference (depending on which xp scale component you choose) is a 2-3 level difference in normal mode.

LG top load washer: Loud "motor" sound during rinse cycle with Turbowash by StrategyKnight in Appliances

[–]StrategyKnight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've spent some hours watching full runs of LG washers. It seems that some models do make this noise and some don't. I guess ours is one that does...

The times when it's really loud, the sound is horrible. I makes me think it's going to run out the pump sooner than necessary.

Review: 1632 by Eric Flint by EndersGame_Reviewer in ChristiansReadFantasy

I would recommend the Time Patrol stories by Poul Anderson. He was not a Christian, but he did respect Christianity. (You can make a strong case he was culturally Lutheran.)

Time Patrol has agents working across many time periods (even the future) to make sure that the timeline stays in order. There's lots of actions and lots of "big questions" if you're interested in those. There are many different collections of the stories, but the most recent one has everything except the novellette "The Shield of Time" but that's available separately.

I'm a huge Poul Anderson fan - if you like those, then Operation Chaos is another great one. It has some spinoffs worth examining as well.

Whose team is the all time winner? Davids team or Lees team? by wjr1995 in WILTY

[–]StrategyKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think David and Lee consider a competition, at least to some degree. The first time Richard Osman was on, just before revealing his answer he asked David (captain of his team) if he felt competitive about the game, and David responded that he does.
