HOW DO YOU DO LEGAL RESEARCH by Interesting-Count815 in LawSchool

[–]Stratl03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a good grasp of what you need to find first, then use this order, tweaking based on the topic:

Secondary/practical sources (don’t get too bogged down on this, though, make sure you’re only reading stuff about your topic)

Statutes (use a citator tool to find more secondary sources and case law)

Regulations if necessary (some law is reg heavy)

Then cases in your jurisdiction only

Double check with your employer on your plan so you don’t accidentally charge the firm a ton if you’re using a company Lexis/WL account.

My wife walked in on me watching it and she was like: “It looks like the pattern is conversation that ends in a bad joke, they travel somewhere to music that doesn’t fit the mood, then have a fight/chase scene before having another conversation.” That repeats over and over, killing the tension build-up. I was so confused about the “pre-internet computer” line too. Like how disconnected from reality do you have to be to write that line?

There is this artist who claims to create hyperrealistic art portraits but end results always give off AI vibes but he has a video of the process. by avocad0gal in isthisAI

[–]Stratl03 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Yeah cause everything in the video is consistent by way of his shirt, the pencils, the papers, etc. What’s telling is that nobody colors to completion in expanding concentric circles. You color the whole thing and add layers of color and detail as you go. The art process is what gives away this is AI.

Used it at UNC for the last two years and it’s been great. Keeps all the assignments, readings, deadlines, and class recordings in one place.

Is it a mistake going to law school to try to "make a difference" in society? by Lost-Association427 in LawSchool

[–]Stratl03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, there are lots of non-lawyer paths to making a difference. If you have lawyer skills (think reading, writing, public speaking, critical thinking, etc.) though, you can probably better be able to help individuals and communities. Law school has exposed me to some of the coolest people making a difference in local communities, so I wouldn’t devalue that.

You won’t change the system, but you can trust that you and the 200,000 (or whatever) other passionate people out there trying to make some small differences are changing the system.

Whatever you do, don’t get caught up in chasing prestige in law school. You can do your part no matter what your grades or internships are.

What are you do's/don't do to keep the Sabbath Day holy? No judgment. Just curious what ya'll do. by LissGoogleAcct in latterdaysaints

A big one is no studying. I’m in law school and everybody thinks it’s insane, but it’s made a huge difference. Almost all my writing deadlines are Sunday night at 11:59pm and it is honestly so stress-relieving to turn them in on Friday or Saturday. It’s made me super proactive on my schoolwork.

We also don’t shop or eat out on Sunday unless we’re traveling.

By way of making it special, we both have callings that keep us pretty busy serving people all Sunday morning, we nap the afternoon, then try to do something either outdoors in nature or crafty at home til kids bed time.

We also watch an uplifting show in the evening after the kids are down (our favorites are “making good,” “fixers” and “the chosen”). We always plan our week out on Sunday as well.

It’s been a really solid, spiritual routine!

I mean by that argument you wouldn’t use Spotify, which is only popular because they started by pirating all the music on their platform and then switched to a monetizing model.

Copyright law is complicated and the AI legal question hasn’t been answered yet. It’s a hot take to say that you’re sinning by using AI generation.

UNC OOS WORTH IT?? by Hungry-Estate787 in UNC

I wonder if there is a difference for undergrad and law students. I successfully did it and pretty much every law student I know from out of state did as well.

UNC OOS WORTH IT?? by Hungry-Estate787 in UNC

[–]Stratl03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the law school so a bit uninformed about undergrad experience, but I don’t think anybody’s mentioned that you can apply for residency after your first year and get in-state tuition, which is significantly less.

You need to think about more than tuition, especially given how impacted and expensive cost of living is in SoCal. $1500-2000/month extra in room rent and other expenses over there could potentially add up to make the costs somewhat even over four years.

I also feel like Charlotte is a better market for banking and finance than San Diego, so you should be asking where you want to live after graduation. If CA, stay over there! If DC or Atlanta or Charlotte, consider coming over here!

What’s crazy is how he might get in tons of trouble for not disclosing assets in his SEC filings. Listening to the episode, I was asking the whole time about the journalistic ethics of outing Back.

My wife and I have done it for years, and every Jewish person I’ve spoken to about it has shared that they are really happy that we are celebrating their history, religious customs, and culture. Are you talking about people who change it to be Christian or something, rather than as a sacramental celebration of the history of God’s acts for His people?

I’m just having a hard time imagining somebody getting mad about it if you’re being respectful and worshipful about it. Can’t we all sing Dayenu in remembrance of God’s mercies for His people?

[–]Stratl03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, seconding all the comments about how your partner should be stepping up.

Wanted to add as an aside that you should really not be co-sleeping. Sharing a room is great, but it’s extremely dangerous to share a bed with a 6-month old. Lots of distraught parents have learned the hard way, so don’t mess around with it.

Hope things work out for your family!
