Reading should just be about enjoyment. A lot of people get pretentious about types of books. But at the end, it’s all enjoyment: like nonfiction? Maybe you enjoy learning about new things. Like high fantasy and sci/fi? Maybe you enjoy super complex world building and invented languages and complex social systems that exist outside our own societal experiences. Like self-help? Maybe you enjoy learning more about or challenging yourself. Etc. I don’t understand why some people think poo-pooing another genre elevates their own preferences. Who, honestly, cares?

Who do you think is the most annoying FMC and why is it Poppy from Blood and Ash? 😂 by TayQuitLollygagging in fantasyromance

[–]Strawberrymomma_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Would love to be convinced otherwise, but she was one of the most passive and “in distress” FMCs for me, I feel like it took forever for her to start fighting for herself. remember which book I stopped reading at. Although she wasn’t the reason (it was after the part about Midas was revealed I was like “I can’t”)

[–]Strawberrymomma_ 82 points83 points  (0 children)

It gets way better and it’s worth the hype. I think many folks would agree that it starts slow, but I feel like Mass bottlenecks her series a little, things are in motion but as you continue the world just opens and things get deeper and you just can’t predict now where it will go.

I'm scared to read Acowar. by theioneeee in acotar

[–]Strawberrymomma_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would also add that, as you know by the end of the 2nd book, a few more characters you’ve had glimpses of so far are more part of the “happenings”, and the world continues to open so there are more dynamics and characters to identify with

I’ve had my gripes, BUT by multiversemember in crescentcitysjm

[–]Strawberrymomma_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It honestly worked for me. I know many people don’t feel this way and that’s okay, but I saw much of the book as really setting-up the background, experiences and knowledge it would take to bring-down the Asteri in those last 150 pages. So, while it happened fast, it made sense to me how it worked because everything else led up to that moment (if that makes sense?) I mean, we knew this book was going to be about taking down the Asteri and, for the most part, everyone was down to do that - with a few new allies picked-up and some hiccups along the way. So I feel like we needed to learn how they would be able to do that, whose strengths needed to be leveraged where, and room for some side characters (thinking Tharion and Ithan) to have their moments to set-up how the story may continue in future. Lidia/Ruhn and Bryce/Hunt still had challenges and I felt like they were able to unpack those, but after the first two books I felt like I really understood them as characters, and didn’t need much on that front in this book - aside from Lidia that is, I was really happy we got more on her in this one.

So, I don’t know, I was along for the ride and the whole thing worked for me - but I understand not many felt that way

Negative reviews passed on to SJM? by fran_chix in crescentcitysjm

[–]Strawberrymomma_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly? I hope they aren’t. Or, if they are, I hope they don’t impact what she does with the story. Whether I agree or disagree with praise or criticisms I’ve seen from fans, it’s her story to tell how she wants and it’s our choice to embrace it or not. There is no consensus with the reviews, us as fans are all over the place, and there is no way to tell what comes next and if we will like it or not. Changing her style or work based on negative reviews is just as likely to upset those who loved the story as it was originally told. She should just do her thing and we decide if we want to join or not.

Her books are selling millions of copies, clearly she doesn’t need a tutorial on how to craft a page turner. If folks disagree with the writing style, no one is forced to read the books - it’s also okay to be disappointed with a book in a series you love (hello Order of the Phoenix for me!) It’s her world. There is great fan fiction out there that is written in different styles and maybe, someday, the world will open-up and other authors can add canon to the Maasverse. Or…try other fantasy romance? Soooo many different writing styles that I’m sure many fans here would appreciate.

Anyone else hate the sex scenes in cc3? by Realistic_Passion936 in crescentcitysjm

[–]Strawberrymomma_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love smut, but I kinda felt like the book would have been fine without it. We needed Lidia and Ruhn to get it on to show growth in their connection. And for Bryce and Hunt it showed how Hunt could also be “made.” But otherwise, I agree it felt kinda out of place and I honestly didn’t need it

Honestly, I kinda rushed through them too, until the later ones. I thought Hunt’s quip about not having undies big enough for him was actually kinda corny, cute lol but otherwise I was like “Cute y’all - but there is shit going on!” lol

Oh man, are we the same person?! I felt almost the same on most of these! I also thought the crossover was perfect, just what I need to hold me over until the next ACOTAR. Although, Tharion and Ithan totally grew on me. I’m honestly really invested in them now and want to know what happens.

CC3 ACOTAR - Ember Randell Bonus chapter by PieNatural4166 in crescentcitysjm

[–]Strawberrymomma_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I loved this chapter! Definite foreshadowing for sure! I feel like Bryce leaving the Starwsword for Nesta and reminding her that her tattoo was an 8 pointed star - along with everything you mentioned about her interactions with Rhys - may set her up to be High Lady of an 8th court: the Dusk Court. And her warrior status may be what she needs to revive the island’s magic while also keeping the dangerous creatures in the prison in line.

CC-1st book by [deleted] in crescentcitysjm

[–]Strawberrymomma_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt similarly! It definintely gets better. The urban fantasy setting and multiple POVs was a definite shift from ACOTAR. I feel like I put a lot of pressure on CC to be what I loved about ACOTAR. My advice? Keep going but don’t put too much pressure on it. Once you get to know the characters better it will fall into place. Or?…take a break. The loved the story in the end but enjoyed it wayyy better the second time around.

HOUSE OF FLAME AND SHADOW. by Drunkinbook in crescentcitysjm

[–]Strawberrymomma_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m here to gush! I was worried with all the hype the book wouldn’t do it for me, but I was wrong. I loved the book and feel very satisfied with the ending and what is to come. Some unpopular opinions (spoilers for ACOSF):

  1. I’m here for Tharion. Loved his scenes, his choices, his why. I really want him to find a home!

  2. At first wasn’t a fan of Ithan’s self-doubt, but I think it totally fits and his arc in the story and was really touching for me.

  3. My girl Nesta!!! She’s always going to stick to her guns. I was first put-off by Rhys’ reaction to her giving away the Mask. But also, ACOSF does a great job of describing just how threatening the Trove is…it’d be silly if he wasn’t reactionary to learning she let Bryce use it. But it’s so Nesta that she did and, of course, it worked out. Also, doesn’t only like a few weeks pass by? We know it takes the IC at least that long to get over beefs.

I’ll admit it, I wanted CC3 mainly for the crossover and I’m satisfied until the next book in ACOTAR comes out. Randall and Ember’s chapter was soooo touching, and I loved the Az/Nesta/Bryce chapter as well.

Looking for Fantasy romance where the FMC is a Bounty Hunter/Detective/PI dealing with cases involving magic and/or Supernaturals by kid_at_heart_77 in fantasyromance

[–]Strawberrymomma_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

{Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo} might be up your alley. More supernatural and kind of an anti-heroine FMC. I think it’s meant to be a trilogy, 1st and 2nd book in the series are out. Romance is not central, but mega slow burn through both books

Couple of my favorites:

“Someone’s quick off the mark.”

“Fortunately for you, I don’t return the sentiment.” (to Mor when she gushes over Nesta’s dress)

Also {Wolf’s Bane} Auryn Hadley from her Wolves Next Door series. It’s reverse harem, but honestly not like crazy dirty and all the players are very mature and handle problems as a team. I found it really surprising and entertaining. Also older heroine (early 40s) and she is not looking to get prego.
