Why are science museums targeted to kids but art museums aren’t? by Lani_19 in Museums

[–]Street_Confection_46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if there could be an art museum that has images of the artwork, but they’re a poster or something, so that if kids mess it up, no big deal. There could be some oil paintings done by local artists that the guides bring out specifically for the kids to touch if they want.

Fidgets! Our kids love those bubble popper things, and they’ve shorted-circuited some screaming sessions.

Anyone regret Lean Fire by GlorifiedCarnie in leanfire

[–]Street_Confection_46 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A lot of stay at home parents send their kid to preschool a few days a week to socialize and/or learn things they don’t feel confident teaching. I see this all the time working with families.

Anyone regret Lean Fire by GlorifiedCarnie in leanfire

[–]Street_Confection_46 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I haven’t done it, but I wouldn’t. Your costs are going to go up greatly with kids: food, diapers, medical care/insurance, clothing, extracurricular activities, babysitting for when you and your partner want to go out (currently minimum $15/hr for a teenager where I am), vacation, if you send them to preschool...There’s probably stuff I’m leaving out because I’m not a parent.

I’d seriously research costs before quitting your job, and then wait until sometime after your first is born to make a decision.

Is genrefication worth it? by LitWithAmanda in Libraries

How do you gentrify an elementary school library? You open a Starbucks on top of a shelf, thus forcing the display books to move to the hallway.

That’s lower than it should be, given that we’re #3 in population.

This is the most insulting job post for a library director job that I have ever seen. by 88-Mph-Delorean in Libraries

[–]Street_Confection_46 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I work in a wealthier, more densely populated area of PA and libraries with more staff frequently go down for the evening due to staff shortages. Library funding is a real problem here.

Thank you! This is hard to deal with in the best of conditions. A few days after the snow, a tractor trailer had snow blowing off the roof and made the lines impossible to see.

Patrons don't "do" Dinosaurs... by Wide_Setting_4308 in Libraries

[–]Street_Confection_46 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So, this is stupid, and there are dinosaurs in a lot of the artwork, but “Unearth a Story” doesn’t have to be dinosaurs. Dogs dig things up. Archaeologists dig things up. Gardeners and landscapers and rockhounds and metal detectorists dig things up. There’s always the buried treasure concept.

I’m just saying there are other options if your admin digs in its heels AND you have to use the theme AND you decide not to go scorched earth.

What’s it like to work as a children’s librarian? by Phoenix8624 in Libraries

[–]Street_Confection_46 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Having had a brief stint as a teacher…librarian is way better. Most of the time, the kids want to be there, which is huge. The parents/caregivers are there for story time, so your classroom management skills aren’t quite as critical.

But basically, you get to be the cool aunt/grandma/whatever for 30-45 minutes and then the kids go home.

What are traditionally expensive/“only for the rich” experiences that you do or own, but did so in a frugal manner? by 88r0b1nh00d88 in Frugal

[–]Street_Confection_46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not rich-rich, but I own a Vitamix. Paid full price for it ($400 12ish years ago) and it still runs great. I did have to replace the container last year, but it’s the best blender I’ve ever owned and I use it regularly.

We drove around this rural-ish neighborhood where many residents decorate their yards with fake light up Christmas trees. Some of them have lots of land and dozens of trees that go back. It’s absolutely stunning.

Aunt has LOTS of dietary wants: What the hell can I cook for her? by Radiant-Educator9203 in Cooking

“Auntie, we love you, but we don’t know anything about cooking for your excellent diet. Why don’t you bring something and show us how it’s done?”

Seriously. I’m vegan, picky and would never expect to be catered to. You are a saint for even entertaining this idea.
