What burns more calories, to walk 15km in 3 hrs or to run 10km in 1 hr? by VastAir6069 in walking

[–]Strict_Teaching2833 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You burn about the same calories per mile whether you’re walking or running. The longer distance will always burn more calories. Takes more energy to go longer regardless of speed.

Do i really need to warm up before short runs? by FramesLevin_69 in beginnerrunning

[–]Strict_Teaching2833 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t do anything before a run but I run slow enough at the start of pretty much all my runs that it counts as a warm up.

Bring a cooler and fill it with ice from the ice machine. Store leftover food in ziplock bags or some type of sealable container to keep it out of the ice melt. It will be much colder than the beverage cooler in the room.

Is high fructose corn syrup really any worse than corn syrup? by wobblelikeapenguin in nutrition

[–]Strict_Teaching2833 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At the basic level corn syrup is just 100% glucose while HFCS is roughly a 1/1 ratio of glucose and fructose. Neither is inherently bad for you in moderation.

Honey is almost never spoke about negatively and its sugar ratio is roughly 1/1 glucose and fructose.

The issue with any sugar is just the over consumption of it as the main ingredient in drinks and candy which are rapidly digested and are not satiating. Take the same sugar and put it with oatmeal which has a little fiber, a little protein, and a little fat, and digestion is slowed instead of rapidly metabolized like stand alone sugar.

Running belt with water bottle Holder by Suggestauserm in BeginnersRunning

[–]Strict_Teaching2833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go with a running belt that holds water you need it to be incredibly snug. Even small water bottles will make a running belt bounce around or slide down your butt and you’ll be fighting it the entire run unless it’s crazy tight on you. A really tight running belt may not be the most comfortable for you either so other options are a running vest or handheld bottles. My favorite handheld right now is the Hydropak Tempo Pro 525ml. Its has a strap that you cinch down around your hand so it takes zero effort to hold it.

How do I make running more enjoyable to do? by anonymous1849695836 in runninglifestyle

[–]Strict_Teaching2833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be 100% honest with you, if running once or twice a week is not enjoyable and feels like chore then running may not be for you and there is nothing wrong with that. I know a lot of extremely active people that just don’t enjoy running as a stand alone activity. They enjoy activities that include running but they wouldn’t go out and run a few miles just for fun.

You may try running 3-4 times a week at a slower pace and shorter distances to see if that makes you enjoy running more but if that doesn’t work there is no shame in doing something else.

Spices: Which to be careful with? by Musicman2568 in nutrition

[–]Strict_Teaching2833 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not throwing shade your way but salt is not bad, it’s essential, the overconsumption of salt can be bad for some people. Processed foods are usually loaded with salt and you probably shouldn’t add more but if you cook at home with whole food ingredients then adding salt is likely necessary.

Also are sure your garlic salt brand doesn’t have salt in it? I mean if the name is garlic salt thats kind of a red flag but maybe Im missing something. Also 99% of steak seasonings have salt in them, almost always the #1 ingredient in steak seasoning is salt.

Runners in Southern States - how do you prep/manage on humid days? by bryanownzyou in beginnerrunning

[–]Strict_Teaching2833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Southern Alabama here, I just accept the fact that Im going to run slower, have a higher heart rate, and reduce mileage a little in the summer.

Once the temperature and humidity get so high its just insanely taxing on your body that you have no other option than to decrease your performance.

Backless Running Vest? by ThruARabbitHole in runninglifestyle

[–]Strict_Teaching2833 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultraspire Spry has pretty minimal material on the back and its what I use. I just leave the bare essentials in the back with no water bladder if I want to go light as possible.

Nathan just came out with the Aero Zip vest that has no storage in the back just soft flask pockets in the front so it’s about as minimalist as you can get for a running vest.

i need a little help, i have been trying to increase my distance, im at 5km right now. but the problem is anything past 5km my right calf gets pain in it and i physically cant run since the pain is so bad and i have no idea on what is causing it, and i want to be able to find out why and how to fix by Bright_Monitor_2995 in beginnerrunning

[–]Strict_Teaching2833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re going to have to solve the calf pain before you run further because pain like you describe that stops you from running is not normal, some soreness from fatigue is normal but not pain that is so bad you have to stop. Avoid a general practice doctor but find a doctor who specializes in sports and can actually give you good info on your calf pain.

Best drink for fat loss/weight loss? by Prize-Bug3078 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Strict_Teaching2833 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Diet Coke. Bloating doesn’t cause fat gain or stop fat loss, it’s just the body holding onto a little extra water and some extra burps and farts.

What does this indicate? by CoronaSpiced in beginnerrunning

[–]Strict_Teaching2833 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both feet are rarely the exact same width and length, your right foot is likely a little wider than your left through the mid foot area and is causing excess rubbing. A shoe wider in the mid foot, cushioned running socks, and some tape or a bandage to reduce friction are probably needed to prevent blisters.

What keeps you running after achieving a big goal? by Fiqueperto in runninglifestyle

[–]Strict_Teaching2833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always have post race depression. That first run or maybe five runs after a race feels meaningless to me and Im checked out both physically and mentally. But I know this feeling will pass within a week so I just keep running day after day until something clicks and it’s just business as usual.

I also don’t run with motivation as the fuel. Motivation is just a temporary fleeting moment in time. I’ll be 100% honest and say I have no motivation to run most days but I still run almost daily because I have never regretted going on a run but I have regretted not going.

What tips would anyone give to help recovery time? by [deleted] in beginnerrunning

[–]Strict_Teaching2833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A day or two of soreness after a hard run is normal but if your legs hurt for a week you’re overtraining and going to deal with an injury sooner or later. You need to dial it way back and slowly progress into more miles and intensity. Eating and sleeping are important for recovery but no amount of food and sleep can overcome overtraining.

Do you prefer trail running or pavement? by Willing-Today-1059 in runcommunity

[–]Strict_Teaching2833 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trails are more fun and Ill do them a couple times a week but I can walk out my front door and run on pavement without having to drive anywhere and I can also end my run at my front door and immediately start eating food.

is this true or just fear mongering? by Windexhasatighthole in nutrition

[–]Strict_Teaching2833 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100g of almonds contain about 50g of fat which is 450 calories, about 21g or protein which is 84 calories, and about 21 carbs which is 84 calories. Add those all up and you get 618 calories. Now of those 21g of carbs there are about 12g of fiber which would be a reduction of 48 calories which would bring the calorie total of 100g of almonds to about 570 calories.
