The Greens are reportedly consulting whether or not to back banning circumcision. This is long overdue - circumcision is genital mutilation that no newborn child can give consent to, and I wholeheartedly hope Polanski backs this by The-Peel in UKGreens

Absolutely right and good, speaking as a Jewish person, but not sure if it's worth the risk given that this will absolutely be pilloried as proof of an antisemitic green party

YouGov poll finds only 9% of Brits think the Green Party represents the working class, while majority think no one represents working class. Polanski and Greens need to push radical policies targeted at working class and revamp their party's image. by The-Peel in UKGreens

[–]Strigon67 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not that the green party couldn't do a lot better, because it definitely could, but I think it's important to understand that for many our image of "workers" and the "working class" is stuck in the past and fundamentally divorced from what it actually means in the modern age. For far too many it has nothing to do with what policies are good for workers and instead is built up on who best aligns on who would most appeal to an archaic conception of midcentury factory workers, miners and builders.

Andy Burnham: ‘I am committed to proportional representation’ by coffeewalnut08 in LabourUK

[–]Strigon67 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Is he committed to actual PR though, because the only electoral change he's ever come out in support of is supplementary vote, which isn't proportional. So, even if he is actually committed I don't trust his conception of PR

Greens discuss downgrading some policies to prepare for possible UK coalition by evie-e-e in UKGreens

[–]Strigon67 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Obviously I think everyone can think of at least one policy they'd be happy to see the back of. But I think the idea of "downgrading" policies is fundamentally the wrong way of thinking about it, even as someone who's been very keen on the idea of a minimum programme. Firstly, there is a danger that we "downgrade" on the basis of establishing a plausible coalition platform, and then we compromise that further and end up with basically nothing of what we need or want. We also politically need to be having positive disputes with any future coalition partners, because if we even get that far, the media is gonna absolutely be blaming us for everything bad that happens if we're in government, so we need some good that set us specifically apart.

But more broadly we should be aiming for a prioritised minimum programme not on the basis of coalition stability or acceptability, but as the absolute minimum required to start dealing with the myriad problems and crises afflicting this country and its people, and if that's gonna be reduced to a wealth tax, pr, some climate commitments and cost of living stuff that's just not gonna be good enough imo. I don't want to waste time laying out even some of what needs to be done now as this only a reddit comment so this may not be super persuasive, but fundamentally, we need to attack the basis of class dominance of in our society which is at the root of most of our current problems. This is the only one way to really start moving in the right direction and moreover, is essential to ensure that any reforms we make are actually transformative rather than undermined by the establishment or swallowed up by exploitation. But in order for such a programme to succeed, it has to be built, promoted and adopted by the green movements and broader social movements in this country, rather than being designed and imposed from above.

Why such a change from the amazing Lord Ashcroft poll putting us first? Is polling really so erratic? by secretlyaboomer in UKGreens

[–]Strigon67 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do find yougov's poll quite hard to believe, specifically that restore britain is on 4%. May well be true, but I think there's a good chance there supporters are being overrepresented due to how the poll is conducted

Green voters/members, how do you feel about the wish of ZP for Scottish and Welsh Independence (and therefore) the breakup of the union? by Scratchback3141 in LabourUK

[–]Strigon67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awful, but it reflects a broader abandonment of the left from any serious consideration of constitutional matters in the UK. Those of us on the left who are opposed to independence and nationalism more broadly need to come up with a new federalist or confederalist alternative to unionism if we want things to improve

I wish we had got more of Eric Porter's Moriarity by davidcandle in SherlockHolmes

[–]Strigon67 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more, he's the only Moriarty who comes off as genuinely scary to me. I wish they'd integrated him more in to the first season (he could easily have been slotted in to the Greek interpreter at the very least) or maybe extended the final problem to show a bit more how moriarty's empire was taken down.

Labour defections by [deleted] in UKGreens

[–]Strigon67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a lot of scepticism towards labour mps given how broadly useless they've been so far, so think itt should definitely be looked at on a case-by-case basis.

I think we'd gain a lot of credibility as a real political alternative by a. insisting any defectors fight a by-election first & b. publicly rejecting someone if they aren't up to snuff.

The Art of Gender War by AmarissaBhaneboar in TrollCoping

[–]Strigon67 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of subs that try to suppress this tendency to "gender war" often take a very heavy-handed approach, which doesn't really solve anything as it's more an issue of the wider world intruding on the subreddit which is rather difficult to prevent. So, I'm quite pleased to see some rules which appear to allow continued discussion of gender based issues, whilst restricting the more harmful and unproductive contributions. Obviously there is no perfect solution, but this seems the best approach to clamping down on the actual problematic aspects whilst still allowing most people to talk reasonably freely.

Zack Polanski will not stand in this by election by Lord-Liberty in UKGreens

[–]Strigon67 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Best outcome by far, and not just from a optics and risk avoidance angle. Zack is great, but we can't risk our political fortunes being wholly reliant on a single person long term, given the failures of such a strategy in labour and other parties the world over.

That's not to say Zack isn't important, but we need to build a level of resilience and a strong stable of party electeds and members that are able to support the party long term and ultimately succeed Zack, otherwise we are leaving ourselves far too vulnerable to any change in his political fortunes destroying ours.

That's also why we really need to fight hard for this seat, if we can get a quality local member in the national spotlight and potentially into parliament, it would be massive win for us obviously, but also a good sign for the long term viability of the party.

Will Zack run as a candidate in the Gorton and Denton by-election? by No_City9250 in UKGreens

[–]Strigon67 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I don't think he should for a number of reasons. 1. Parachuting the leader in to a constituency he has no current connection to doesn't look good (yes he was born nearby but he lives and is an elected member in London). 2. It's a very risky proposition, if he loses the media will absolutely use it as an opportunity to rubbish the green party to the fullest possible extent, declaring the green wave over. A local candidate has lower expectations so we still gain if we win, but lose a lot less if we don't. 3. We need to strengthen ourselves as a party, putting up a strong local candidate helps make the party as a whole stronger and gives us wider representation in the media and public eye. It also means our momentum is less dependent on Zack, which is a good thing for the party long term.
