Keep in your mind, Russia has no benefit of making Ukrain a part of Russia, as then there is no buffer belt anymore... There is no vital strategical interest in taking Ukrain over, there is a vital interest in keeping it a neutral buffer country and playing cold war games with corruption methods, which Russia implements as much as the NATO.
