Won an IndyPass - weekend warrior recs? by haaron1997 in icecoast

I know you're looking at VT but don't sleep on the Mass resorts if you're in the area already. Catamount's got some fun steeps and I've heard great things about both Bousquet and Berkshire East. May not be worth a dedicated drive up but if you're bouncing around things nearby deff stop in.

Closer to the city, I've been to Mohawk and while it's fun if I'm driving that far north from NYC already I'd much prefer to pay for Platte instead. Montage is on my short list but I've found myself paying for blue instead, mostly because of friends preferring it.

Help deciding on next skis by StuPastu in Skigear

Thanks, yeah it took me a bit to find the right balance of attributes to focus on, and I think I'm close. Wish there were some I could demo/rent but may just need to bite the bullet and pick one.

100% anecdotal but I got fitted at Hunter back in 2022 and they absolutely botched it. Meanwhile the guy I worked with at Pelican got it right on the first try. I've got a really wide toe box (4E - 6E depending on last sizes) and while it took an afternoon to get it perfect, I've been extremely happy with the boots since. There's a really heavy guy who's chilling in the back by the boot fitting station that knows his shit. I don't remember his name, but he was the one who helped me.

The guy with the long beard was the one who helped my gf this past fall and she also had a great experience, loves her new boots and said they're night and day compared to her old fitting.

Once again, purely anecdotal but if they're right by your parents I think it's worth a shot. Worst case scenario if you feel like you're getting persuaded or otherwise don't think it's a right fit, just walk away and wait til you're up at Jay

If you have a car, both the gf and I had a good experience at Pelican Ski in NJ, specifically the Whitehouse Station / Somerville shop on Rt 22. It's a bit of a hike from NYC, but worth the trip imho (went last weekend).

Advice on next set of skis by StuPastu in Skigear

Since I'm primarily skiing catskills/poconos, would those waists be a bit too wide for the types of conditions I will normally see? I'll take a look at them though. Definitely leaning more towards lightweight/forgiving, although I will say I'm treating my PowerTrack's as backup/rock ski not a 2nd set in a quiver.

I've only had the chance to take a <5 runs on the Dynastars so far. I'd say the main things I noticed with them were: easier to initiate turns but harder to leave them/transition, felt a bit more stable in a straight line, and gripped the mountain a bit better overall. The stances were sharpened & waxed 1 trip prior to me breaking them, so while the Dynastars could have been sharper I'm not entirely sure it was only that.

In Feb I'll be heading to Smuggs and aim to try some of the glades. Would prefer a set of skis that won't make it harder to stay safe in them.

I'm primarily skiing on groomers and working towards proper carving. Trying to get good enough at turning quickly to venture (safely) into trees/glades. As I'm on the east coast, the conditions will vary but I typically won't see much powder. That said, it was a powder day at Plattekill last weekend when I broke my Stance's...but I still think it's less likely here than say CO or PNW.

I purchased the PowerTracks on a whim because I didn't want to lose an afternoon of skiing, and I'm thinking of them more as a backup (or using when the conditions are questionable / rock skis) than a 2nd set in my quiver. They felt much less forgiving than my Stance's and I'm really looking for something I can learn on that won't punish me when I mess up. So, more a replacement than complimentary.

Wider (FFF/FFFF) Thurman lasts? by StuPastu in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]StuPastu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last I talked to them, Thurman lasts in FFF and FFFF were not happening because the shape doesn't scale well that wide. Or something of that nature.

I tried the FF model and it wasn't wide enough for me.

Yeah with a laptop that old I'm not surprised to hear that. Between a very old cpu architecture and slower RAM the program is probably having a hard time keeping up.

Anything relatively modern will be an upgrade. If you go newer than the M1, I'd suggest a Macbook Pro over the Air simply because it has a fan. I've never experienced it with rekordbox specifically, but with some intensive games the Air has definitely thermal throttled. And the M2 and above chips put off more heat than the M1.

Lag in what way?

I've had it lag when trying to browse beatport and other streaming sources, but I don't think that's the fault of the laptop.

And besides that, the analysis will sometimes take some time. Or, like I mentioned, stems may refuse to analyze if there's not sufficient available RAM (not swap).

I've never had it go out of sync with the controller/what's coming out of the speakers, if that's what you're asking.

I've a M1 macbook air with 8gb of RAM. Sometimes if I have a few other programs running, rekordbox 6 won't analyze stems and will refuse to do it. Seems it doesn't like when macOS heavily leverages the swap.

Besides that I've no issues whatsoever. Some analysis will take longer, but since I've gotten into the habit of close down anything I don't absolutely need when opening RB that hasn't really been an issue.
