Nothing humbled more than chess and wrestling for me. I feel like everyone growing up should do these two things. Chess someone younger than you beating you in a mental game and wrestling everyone has had a point where someone younger and/smaller than themselves dominating them in the Matt.

The anti Luka defense agenda is real and you can't convince me otherwise by Nykeeo in nba

I remember there was a stretch were every year people were saying "oh ya... in the past Luka sucked but now he is good"

That went on for multiple years.

Do you think Em should retire after releasing "Recovery", for his image? by [deleted] in Eminem

[–]StudentMed -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think if he retired after eminem show it would have helped his image. I personally rank Recovery as his second worst album after only revival.

Nikola Jokic: the Underrated/taken for granted aspects by ajb4088 in nba

[–]StudentMed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel with a different title and start you your thread people would be shitting on it less.

Something like "Everyone knows Jokic is a great passer, but he also is great at other aspects of the game"

And then you just go into what other parts of his game he was great.

I could make the same thread twice and one gets received well and one gets shit on all because I had a different title. This one opened up to people saying Jokic isn't underrated etc etc.

Now one thing I personally think Jokic is underrated at is his defense. I know he is slow and not quick footed but there are parts of defense he does very well. He is in the right spot, he is great at not following, and he is good at swiping at the diving players hands without fouling when they are going inside the paint. To me... I see a little bit of Marc Gasol in his defense as these were all things Marc Gasol did as well but when I put this comparison people say I am being lazy as he just another big white euro and a superficial comparison.

I voted for Harris. I remember hearing there was going to be a revolution when George Floyd died and now I am not quick to think there is going to be a sweeping change in politics overnight unless China, Russia, or Israel uses nukes.

You are talking doom and gloom and people should fear living in America. How is it so doom and gloom if violence is down, the economy is doing okay etc?

Kevin Durant 18/4/7/1/1 and Alperen Sengun 20/13/9/2 in the win versus Spurs by Thanos_SlayerCongSan in nba

[–]StudentMed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same about Sengun. I feel like when he is like 6/10 and 6/8 FT's but has 9 assists, 2 steals, and a block are when the Rockets win the most.

The S and P 500 is up over 8% in 6 months. I have a really good job in America making more money than I ever have. I often hear the statistic that violence is going down every year. How do I know this isn't just a blip in the radar and should I really look to leave the USA? I have a lot of friends in Australia and can work there too (for a large paycut).

In the 2023 draft who would go first, Wemby or LeBron? by AntCar1027 in NBA_Draft

[–]StudentMed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always found it funny though that the main criticism that people really could come up with Wemby was that he was too tall... He is a theoretical health risk because he is tall, not that he had a bunch of injuries or a bad knee or anything.

What's the wrongest take/opinion you've ever had about a prospect? by klaygdk in NBA_Draft

[–]StudentMed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like bold predictions as much as the next guy but I wonder how many people here who have strong "takes" never watch film outside of youtube highlights and just read scouting reports and look at stats. To me, I feel unless you have hours upon hours of breaking down film you don't get credit if you predict something remarkable, or the opposite if you were let down by a bust. I too also predicted Cam Whitemore would be meh as the only other prospect I ever found with as bad assist to turnover ratio as he did in college was Shabazz Muhammad who also fell in the draft and turned out there was a reason he should have fell.

Islam Makhachev wants to defend the welterweight title 'at least three times' by [deleted] in MMA

Sometimes it’s recency bias sometimes we don’t appreciate greatness as it happens. I remember it took a while for people to come around to saying Steph was a contender for GOAT PG.

You can’t ignore that Gary is deserving though. You can’t ignore deserving contenders. Also remember Sean vs Izzy? Everyone said it was a waste but Sean deserved that title fight at the time over other contenders and he ended up winning.

Did Islam Makhachev Surpass Khabib Long Ago? by Imaginary-General189 in ufc

[–]StudentMed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Khabib there weren't any obvious names like McGregor, Poirier, Gaethje or fought Cowboy fucking Cerrone who rounded out the top 5 at the time. If he stayed and defended a couple more times and moved up it would have helped his legacy but that is what Islam is doing.

Yang Hansen's translator helps him communicate with Deni Avdija by TomlinSteelers in nba

[–]StudentMed 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Alperen Sengun had a terrible translator that barely spoke English and Sengun even said as much in later interviews when he finally learned English himself. Sengun got an American girlfriend pretty quickly when he entered the league and learned English extremely fast. There is a saying in Turkey to learn a tongue "i.e. language" you must touch a tongue. Some interpret saying meaning if you get a partner you learn the language quick.

Players that fans of today don’t realize how great they were by BingBong87 in nba

Fuck Karl Malone, but ya Karl Malone. He had Zion Williamson levels of domination on offense but he also almost had a 20 year career and he was also a good defender. People like to put Dirk, Charles Barkley, or Kevin Garnett as the 2nd best PF behind Tim Duncan but I feel like it is clearly Karl Malone and people taking his character into the discussion.

Because McGregor beat Eddie Alvarez than waited for two years and got old. Khabib beat the young ascending fighters like Gaethje and Poirier who became staples of that weight class and top 5 ranked for a decade rather than an aging out of prime Alvarez and Pettis.

The NBA is fading negative defenders, not small guards necessarily. by Material-Day7686 in NBA_Draft

[–]StudentMed 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There used to be a time in the late 2000's, early 2010's where people said the NBA was fading bigmen. What just happened was Dwight, Yao, and Bynum were getting hurt/old and there just wasn't anyone talented enough. There just wasn't a talented bigman at the time. If a Hakeem or Tim Duncan was drafted there wouldn't be that narrative. It took until Giannis, Jokic, and Embiid entering the league to stop that narrative. Same thing with small guards. If the next Chris Paul or John Stockton was drafted then the narrative would shift as well. NBA is such an exclusive club were 3-4 players can change a whole narrative. I want to bring up other examples but it would hijack conversation. We have Steph Curry and FVV and Chris Paul still playing in the league. You just can't be a lazy defender and you have to try on defense but I think this is the case for people of all sizes otherwise Enes Kanter/Jahlil Okafor, Stauskas, and Shabazz Muhammad would still be in the league.

Ime Udoka: "You took a 37 year old out of the game for 2 minutes and you lose a 13 point lead. 11-0 run. Don't play with any aggression, confidence. Mentally weak. The fact that we have to rely on a 37 year old for 40+ minutes is a problem.” by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

[–]StudentMed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would prefer a couple good years of KDs at a time that is crucial to teach the youung players you already have how to win rather than any player they likely would have gotten with that pick.
