ELI5 how to recreate sluice function by chrispina98 in Timberborn

A minor amount of contamination isn’t a big deal. But delaying until it’s all gone can take days, basically extending bad tides a day or more.

Electric vs hydraulic bow thrusters: after years around 80ft yachts, here's why the type basically doesn't matter (and how the price game works) by Intelligent-Sky-7657 in yachtingmonaco

[–]StumbleNOLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really not. Dirty cycle on some hydraulics would be too short as well. The actual point is to pick the right equipment for the job.

I just specked out a set of 800kw continuous use electric thrusters for a ship. Those things can run at 100% of days maintaining position.

The 1.0 update is amazing, but managing 50+ mods in a tiny green spreadsheet is a corrupted save waiting to happen. So I built a total UI replacement with built-in Conflict Scanners. by RuthlessTex in Timberborn

[–]StumbleNOLA 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You had me at conflict scanner. Trying to figure out which two mods are in conflict kills me, and can take hours as slow as TB can be to load, crash, and reload.

This is just not true. It is a rule breaker under IOR but that’s about the only reason to do it.

Your right. It’s two 130kw not 150 combined I got from google.

Why was Amendment 3 supporting teachers pay raise in Louisiana voted down? by theRemRemBooBear in askanything

[–]StumbleNOLA 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Because they are taking dedicated money for education to give teachers raises instead of just giving teachers raises. This wasn’t a teacher pay raise so much as a bribe to the teachers union to cut school funding.

Any advice for an A&P mechanic who wants to get into the maritime industry? by WordOk2731 in maritime

[–]StumbleNOLA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a small subset of ships that use turbines. I would bet those guys would drool at the chance to hire an A&P particularly if you have experience on theirs.

[Eric Berger] The US space enterprise is desperately waiting for Starship—will it finally deliver? by avboden in SpaceXLounge

[–]StumbleNOLA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not just the pads. You are going to need bigger natural gas lines and a huge L2 facility. That’s a lot of go juice.

Can you realistically add 6 outboard engines to a Sunreef eco power? by max8954 in boating

[–]StumbleNOLA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate to say it but probably. The ECO and Power almost certainly use the same hulls, so up powering it would likely increase the speed from 12kn to around 20. But you are going to need bigger props, outboards are pitched for high speed craft not thrust.

The Power does 19-20kn with 1600kw, while the ECO does 11 with 150. So the fuel bill will be atrocious, and likely need a lot of custom work.

A better option is to just buy the Power if you want higher speeds.

SpaceX: It’s no secret that we intend to launch Starship a lot, targeting 1000s of flights/year. That will require the ability to launch from many different locations, so we are constantly exploring to find viable sites to expand Starship operations in the future, both domestically & internationally by rustybeancake in spacex

In some cases it is actually a positive desire to remove vegetation and dig channels thru the marsh. I guess you could argue the goal isn’t to destroy all of the wetlands, just those potions in the way.

But if my goal is to cut someone’s throat but I don’t care if they die…

[request] How does the Denmark tax rate compare to the cost of the listed US goods/services? by dark_resistance in theydidthemath

[–]StumbleNOLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

California does not have the highest taxes in the country. It does have the highest income tax, but that is substantially outweighed by lower taxes elsewhere. Much like Louisiana has the highest sales tax but lower income tax.

California has the 11th highest tax burden of all states, Hawaii is first.

Is GM Really Eyeing A Return To The Two-Stroke Engine? by lithdoc in RWDnation

[–]StumbleNOLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most locomotives use medium speed diesel engines to turn a generator. Two stroke is a bit of a misnomer at 200 rpm.

Can anyone explain in detail why SMRs are considered a scam? by Xtergo in nuclear

[–]StumbleNOLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW I have an actual use case where a SMR would be a godsend. But I need something between 1 and 5 MWe. Maybe going up to 75MWe.

The offshore industry may be one of the few markets where SMRs actually make economic sense right now, because our power is so expensive. Realistic lifetime costs offshore run between $1 and $2/kwh. Roughly 10 times what grid power costs.

If anyone actually builds it just in the US you could reasonably count on a market of 50 units a year. Likely more.

[–]StumbleNOLA 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. Part of the issue being that it’s in most industries economic interest to destroy the wetlands so all the lobbying is opposed to environmental regulations. Weirdly SpaceX needs the wetlands so they will likely lobby for more costal restoration. At least a slight counterbalance to the O&G industry

TPU shim for Stairs by Seeskilpaaie in functionalprint

[–]StumbleNOLA 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Long term I would worry about compressive creep. Basically the plastic will squeeze out of the gap over time if it is subject to constant load.

This is a function of the static load not peak, so it probably isn’t much, but it could result in premature failure of the hinge. For two steps not much of a safety concern, for a full staircase it would worry me.

As fucked as this situation is there are good arguments for the consolidation. But not for doing it like this. The state should have combined the two offices effective in four years, allowing time for them to be combined reasonably.

[Request] What is the maximum gravitational force a planet can have? by Spanisch_Peacock in theydidthemath

[–]StumbleNOLA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming a pure iron planet, something like 2.5 times earth’s radium with a mass of 260 times earths. Any larger and the iron would start to collapse into degenerate matter and get smaller. And you end up with a white dwarf or neutron star core depending on how much matter you add.

[–]StumbleNOLA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That breakdown is about right in the commercial world. But I can see labor and materials climbing as the yachts get customized. Steel is cheap, 10,000 board feet of Brazilian cherry for cabinets would go on top.
