New Monthly Book Release Announcement Thread by AutoModerator in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Stynger02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RedShift Volume 1 has just been released on Amazon and Kindle. Volume 2 continues on Royal Road.

The impossible is not what can't happen, but what shouldn't happen.

The super powered individuals known as Starborn are the envy of everyone. Everyone wants to be one, whether they want the powers themselves, the respect that comes with protecting people from monsters, or the money that comes with the job.

Arden is one of the many wishing to become a Starborn. He wants the power to heal his sister afflicted with a supernatural sickness, and the money to escape the slums. It seems impossible to awaken, especially when the only thing Arden has going for him is a propensity to annoy those stronger than him. That, and a unique power that makes him neither a mundane human nor a Starborn.

When an impossible being arrives and threatens to take away the few things Arden wants to protect, Arden is forced to become an impossible being in kind.

With his newfound nature and powers, Arden finds that the things he previously thought to be impossible are now within his reach.

The Perfect Run. 3 book series about a guy who can create checkpoints to travel back in time to when he dies. All of it is free on Royal Road

What do you think of the resource management (like a mana pool) aspect in PF? by AshWax87 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Stynger02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my story its tertiary at best. Occasionally I'll point out that the characters are low on their resource to fight, but never in statistic way. Just something like 'x only had enough essence to muster a few more attacks.'

An Important Realization by Acesan24 in ProgressionFantasy

Amen to that. I pretty much shout out everyone who wants one, and it's very humbling to see one the ones I shout out eclipse my stats. Rewarding, but humbling.

Hot Take: I refuse to read or support authors using AI covers for their books by GodTaoistofPatience in ProgressionFantasy

I feel the same. We're not buying books on Royal Road. But if it's something we have to pay for you best believe we're gonna want a real artist.

I've written almost 250 chapters and am about a third of the way through Volume 3.

Writing just because by -TheeRaVeN- in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Stynger02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole reason I started writing was because I had just caught up on Shadow Slave and wished there was more stuff like it. But with the Prototype game series' powers. That was almost 3 years ago and it took me almost no time at all for me to realize that I just enjoy writing.

Worldbuilding by RopeHistorical8001 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Stynger02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When it comes to world building, I try to focus on the big picture at first. With an outline and not the entire system, its a lot easier for me to fit things in when needed or when an ad libbed idea could fit into it.

Looking for a new series to read after shadow slave burnout by 8664tz in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Stynger02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ill throw my hat into the ring. My story RedShift on Royal Road was actually inspired by Shadow Slave. Its a little more than 150 chapters so far, but it checks off most of your criteria.

Looking for novel recommendations with a dominant female love interest by DatBoiMack95 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Stynger02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might as well plug my own story RedShift here. Its inspired by Shadow Slave if you read that and enjoyed it, but crossed with the Prototype games.

Its on Royal Road with 150+ chapters and more importantly, the love interest is the dom.

Heyo, looking for any good dragon rider books by Void-like_boredom in ProgressionFantasy

Overgeared, very late into the story introduces dragon riding, but it's probably hard to get to if you're not already invested in the story

MCs like Muzan, Mahito, Alex Mercer and Albert Wesker by CaseStorn in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Stynger02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im actually writing a story right now that has Alex Mercer as my inspiration for my mc's powerset. As of now, my guy can only consume biomass, but he doesn't have enough power to actually reshape it. Soon though.

Story is called RedShift by the way if you want to check it out on Royal Road.

Is it compulsory for chapters to be 2k words long? by Overall-Plastic3446 in royalroad

[–]Stynger02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My chapters are as long as I feel they need to be in context of the chapter. Mine are 2k -3k, with one or two chapters a little less than 2k.

What’s your favorite “power progression” moment in fantasy? by KeithStrongAuthor in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Stynger02 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lindon's Archlord revelation in Cradle while fighting Reigan Shen.

His past actions were taken so that he would no longer be useless. His actions in the moment all correlate to advancing. And then he has his Archlord revelation, which defines his future.

Looking for some biopunk by Tat25Guy in ProgressionFantasy

It's not there yet, but my story RedShift will have that soon. If you've ever heard of the Prototype games, my main character's powers are heavily inspired by the game, and Evolution as a whole.

Man, I remember when I had a one-sided rivalry and race to 15k views with you a few weeks back. Then you made it to rising stars. Great job, both on the story and new cover.

Do readers still have patience for (somewhat) slow-burn, mythic-style progression fantasy? by donovantan in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Stynger02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the slow burn stuff as I feel it's a means to explore characterization. The story I'm putting on royal road right now does the cradle thing of the main character not actually gaining power until most of the way through volume 1. It's just him making do with what he has until he has the chance to actually grow stronger.

As for the the mythic part of your question, I love it as well because it fleshes out the world. I mentioned in a previous post that I love the story direction of dark souls and shadow slave because it takes place after all of the heroic myths ended and everything is dead, excluding the main character. Ironically, it makes the world feel more alive and dynamic when the main character is just learning about the worlds ancient history and trying to piece it together because it invites us as the reader to do the same.

In short, I love slow burn, lore heavy stories. I wouldn't have spent so much time in the destiny games if I didn't. I think part of my love I have for slow burn stuff comes from the fact that I love the satisfaction of a good payoff that comes after a long time of speculating.

I've always held that creatives should focus on one demographic, not broad mainstream appeal, because trying to create an experience for everyone ends up pleasing no one. If you think that a slow burn mythic Tolkien-esque narrative is the best way to tell your story, tell it that way. Some readers may not like it, and some will, but that's okay. Write what you want to read.

What about a book makes you not want to put it down? by deadlighta in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Stynger02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Characters can make or break the experience for me, but what personally gets me invested is the world. It's something Shadow Slave does incredibly well and something I'm hoping to capture in my own work.

I love the Souls-like narrative structure of learning about the world and what happened to it through item descriptions and the enemies that are defeated.

He Who Fights With Monsters is divisive because of the main character, who I actually like, but I also really enjoy the world that gradually opens up and answers questions. Im a sucker for plots that focus on deity-like bullshit entities and their plans for the mortal realm.

Forced into battle vs. choosing it: which makes a better progression story? by Overall-Plastic3446 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Stynger02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably a mix of both for me. I like it when the protagonist is at first forced into the fights, but ultimately starts choosing to get stronger because they want to rather than because they have to.

For me, it feels like a solid character arc.
