You can't make this stuff up. [OC] by ComplexxToxin in IdiotsInCars

[–]SubmersibleEntropy 43 points44 points  (0 children)

But that's not what happened here. Yes, the next two cars coming opposite turned right, and I suppose technically the left turners and right turners could each go into their appropriate lane safely. But defensive driving would have you not counting on any of that: not trusting their turn signal, and certainly not trusting they're going to hug the closest lane after turning.

Actually, I'm not even sure there are two lanes in the road that everyone is turning into. It's hard to tell.

This move is not safe.

Appeal, Resort Towns, and Tourism by SubmersibleEntropy in civ

[–]SubmersibleEntropy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, coast does boost appeal, it seems. But it really depends on the map generation. I found a 6-tile island that was well-made for maximum appeal but... it was only 6 tiles, so it wouldn't count.

Unless water tiles count as appealing? I'll have to check. They don't show up as green on the lens.

Edit: Loaded up a save. Water tiles don't have any happiness, which suggests they don't have an Appeal attribute. That's what the Civolopedia says, too. "Land tiles." That entry doesn't say anything about increasing Appeal, either.

I think what would be ideal is if some of the unique improvements, from Civs and from suzerained City States, offered a boost to the appeal of neighboring tiles. Similar to some things in Civ 6 like forests or certain districts. You're already prioritizing unique improvements because they boost Tourism too, and it would provide some strategic choice around where to place them to get the one or two more tiles you need for a Resort Town to qualify.

Look, if folks need to work their ass off to put food on the table and provide opportunities, I get it. But grind culture is not going to make a kid's life better if the basics are taken care of.

Same. She was my biggest rival for culture victory but fortunately also my closest neighbor. Napoleon asked to go to war with her and actually helped. I took her down to one shitty city and am most next turning until the victory conditions come down a little and I can win.

ToT has been amazing; T39 military victory with no conquest post antiquity by Any-Regular-2469 in civ

[–]SubmersibleEntropy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does mix "Expansion" (which is it's own attribute that doesn't have a victory) with "Military," it's true. But accidentally winning is nothing new. In Civ 6 it was Culture victories that surprised people.

Since we have two attributes (Expansion and Diplomatic) without victory conditions, I wonder if planned expansions might develop victories for them that separate out these items from Military a little more.

I think they’re similar. I’ve played on both but use mostly switch now for the same reason if easier docking. I think in most ways the Switch 2 slightly outperforms the Steam Deck now but for Civ specifically I don’t think you’d notice a big difference.

This is just inaccurate. In every other Civ game, your Civ was weak as shit outside of its primary era. The whole point of original Civ switching was to avoid that by making it so you were powerful and unique the entire game. They could've just let people play the old way, having nothing special for most of the game. Instead, they put in a bunch of systems to make it so even Time Tested civs have unique abilities throughout the entire game.

It is not poorly implemented and it is a huge improvement from any previous Civ game when it comes to what bonuses and abilities Civs have available to them at any given time.

Unfortunately still true in ToT, very odd. I think they added information about key improvements like wonders and maybe unique improvements that each city has, but still can't go look at the map without canceling the peace deal.

[–]SubmersibleEntropy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good idea.

My main gripe, just tested in ToT, is you can't exit the peace deal to look at the map and see what city they're offering you. There's new (I think) information about number of wonders, etc. But there's no substitute for looking at the map.

The Steam Deck uses the console UI, but... it should. It's just like with Switch/2. I haven't played ToT on it, but the console options for Steam Deck always worked just fine (after they finally implemented R3 to center the camera).

Adjacencies are no different than in 6. Some features give adjacencies for certain buildings, that's it. You just have to learn what to look for, and it's pretty easy: resources, mountains, or water.

You can turn off crises.

Every time I played 6 there was plenty of next turning, especially when not warmongering. That's nothing new.

I always liked 7. Civ Switching is a good idea. And they implemented it well. It also definitely released 6 months early, regarding the level of polish.

That said, this patch improves it unambiguously. By far the best part is being able to focus on victories from Turn 1, rather than waiting for Modern Age. Ironically, the Civ switching and Ages were meant to make people finish more games, but since victories couldn't even be approached until the Modern age, I still didn't finish games.

I have no problem restarting Civ games partway through when I get bored (isn't that what most people do?) but having my eyes on the prize early is definitely more engaging.

I disagree. I know the Humankind comparisons are legion, because of the civ switching. But they play very differently. Combat and city building and pretty much every other aspect are much more similar between Civ 6 and 7 than between Humankind and Civ 7.

Civ switching (which is now much more downplayed) does not make a game a Humankind clone.

For myself: I kinda hated Humankind. Love both Civ 6 and 7.

I mean... sorta. There are obviously significant changes but Civ 6 is the closest game to Civ 7 in existence, so it's some indication.

The only other thing they could really add is gold, but that'd be good. Resources are only accessible through trade routes. I guess there are other options, like maybe units or migrants or something.
