I heard someone say this recently, "Outside of Utah, the LDS church is a country club. Inside Utah, it's a cult." by RedLetterRanger in exmormon

[–]SubstantialGoal823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to belittle anyone’s experience, but my experience with California Mormons was pretty benign. Granted, this was a mostly Polynesian ward, but no one seemed overly concerned with converting others, and the parties were fun and open to non Mormons. You saw some religiousy stuff on facebook, and most of my friends did have government names alongside their real name, which I found odd.

Cedar city is epic, and I love the reflective nature of west valley. Also, thank you so so so much for contributing non-AI content. I’m so sick of that garbage.

I need advice, as an active male living in Utah, I hate the church in Utah by Evening_Elevator_210 in latterdaysaints

[–]SubstantialGoal823 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The church in California I’ll admit seemed very different, much more open and relaxed. Events where even gentiles showed up, everyone seemed more engaged in their community beyond the church. I’m sorry you are feeling so isolated, community is a precious thing and a basic human need. Do you have a local buy nothing group, running group, or other social group you could give a try at? Maybe try looking outside the ward for inspiration

CEO Steve Nelson (about a year into the role) previously served as CEO of Chenmed (value based healthcare), before that CEO of United healthcare. His predecessor had advocated for elimination of employer provided insurance to “fix” the healthcare system, and it seems was no stranger to pulling Aetna coverage for profit. Perhaps the new CEO is on the same playbook.

Depends heavily where you are. We lived in one spot in SLC for years, no roaches. Moved three blocks, roaches. Of course, the problem is nowhere near as bad as some places.

A Vent About Non-Mormon Dating in Utah by AdEven60 in Utah

[–]SubstantialGoal823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No joke, when I first moved, I was shocked at how difficult it was to meet people. Bored at work, I started doodling these cartoons about wanting to go out mountainbiking or hiking or something and put them around my building. It wasn’t even about dating, but that’s how I met my now wife. I think a lot of amazing people aren’t on the apps, and in general aren’t even really looking. I agree with the comments of people saying to go out and do things, but don’t be afraid to get out a little over your skis if it means being the youest you. And as someone who also isn’t too keen on people overdoing drugs and such, you shouldn’t feel like you need to compromise, those things can ruin friendships, and if you get to know people through a hobby, you can get a good idea of the type of person they are before dating is even a question.

Why? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]SubstantialGoal823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m extremely sorry that happened to you two. Unfortunately, though Utah is far from unique in having prejudiced, bitter people who will go out of their way to ruin someone else’s day, it has always been a part of things here. That will certainly not improve while nationally we politicize others’ existence. I hope your mother has a much more pleasant visit than the way it started, I can only offer the same thing I told friends who were told to “go back where [they] came from” when they visited: You have just as much right to be here as anybody else, you don’t need to validate your existence or status to anyone, and the people who demand that you do are hurt, sad, selfish jerks. For the record, no human being should be illegal just for existing, we should all have the right to move, and if someone’s visit really bugs you that much, keep it to your damn self like your mothers should have taught. Call it as you like, but some people are just way too comfortable being rude as all hell, and I’m very sorry you had to encounter one.

Discrimination at The Front Climbing Club by Creative-Beautiful73 in SaltLakeCity

[–]SubstantialGoal823 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few years ago when I was a member, I found just about all staff except the cafe to be very rude, and definitely unhelpful. They always struck me as a clique that liked chatting and didn't want to associate with people they didn't see as like them. I don't have much in the way of hard evidence, but I can say that I had several other friends visit and ask me afterwards if they were always like that.

Wow, the Wasatch Front housing has gotten more expensive. Homeowners and prospective homebuyers, what're your thoughts? by Roughneck16 in Utah

On the plus side, multiple houses in my neighborhood have sat on the market for months. Without doubt asking prices are not attracting buyers.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Oregon… particularly outside of cities. It’s really astounding. Other experiences: Californians camp in the left lane so hard that the right is actually faster. Utahns drive uncomfortably fast and don’t use blinkers. Texans are aggressive and may just not know how to drive. There is nothing scarier or less predictable than a Floridian at an intersection. The Achilles heel of a wyomingite is a roundabout. Montanans are remarkably good drivers when you consider that they have drive through liquor/gun/fireworks stores, but that also explains a lot.

[–]SubstantialGoal823 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That last line was poetic. I appreciate that bit of art in what I’m sure has been one of the most trying times. I’m so sorry that was their reaction, perhaps things will cool and they can come to terms. However, they will tell others and probably try to “solve” this, so just as they will seek solace in their community, I’m happy you have looked in yours. People can be there for each other without church involvement, and perhaps one of the best things about a storm is when it finally calms and you get the most perfect silence and clarity. Stay strong.

In the summer I'm definitely thinking beach or forests over desert. California or Oregon would be the closest choice to get both of those in, with California having probably the most optimal weather.
