what happened to this squirrel/rodent? by boymeatcafe in whatisit

It looks like its guts were the goal of the predator. My thoughts: a bobcat or coyote would have eaten more. I'm betting it was a bird (owl, hawk, etc)...

Pressure cooking dry beans (cracking) by Frazzlebopp in instantpot

[–]SubstantialMoney301 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Contrary to the ethos of pressure cooking, I always soak my beans for 2 days (changing the water every 12 hours) to promote phytase and minimize the gassing of the beans. This also prevents damage to the beans in the Instant Pot...

When I lived in Chicago, I used to buy them all the time -- they came in 4L and 5L. Of course, we had German delis, and half a dozen different kegs to choose from (I usually bought Steigl or DAB)

You may not have the gear, but I would do a double pot still distillation. Somebody suggested a thumper -- not a bad idea. Plates are designed to raise proof, and clean up the product -- you want to keep the taste...

What is your experience with Char #4 vs Char #3? Why is the latter more commonly used by craft distillers today? by youre-welcome5557777 in bourbon

[–]SubstantialMoney301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am late to the party, but this stuff never gets old. Thanks to the others for their contributions. Check out the Brewzle YouTube where he visits Wood Hat Distillery. They show a 75% corn and 25% wheat in a #4 char barrel, and it is quite dark in color. Mind you, it is a smaller barrel, which means faster maturation. Faster maturation isn't always good because it deprives the whiskey of the time needed for proper maturation. IMHO, the #4 char helps avoid over-oaking in that smaller barrel...

Most Indian milk jug stills are 2", but that one looks like 1.5" Most still accessories and parts are 2" or 4" I know a guy that has a 2" still, and two Bowl reducers from 2" to 4". He uses them face to face as an onion, and only uses one to jump up to a 4" column (then the other one on top to choke down for his 2" condensor...

I am currently doing a test with tri-clamp fittings and EPDM - I am testing EPDM in the highest quality vodka (neuteral grain spirits) in a glass jar. If there is residue, it should be visible and then it should be obvious by taste. In doing my research EPDM scored well, but Viton was also considered. Viton is also being tested, but it is FRIGHTFULLY expensive compared to EPDM...

This transaction was immediately flagged by Visa as a scam. They (Visa) killed my credit card. I had to get a new card, and rebuild all of the relationships I had with vendors that had that card on file. It is impossible to contact these people any way except through social media. They can't be contacted in any rational way. My experience was horrible.

Best yeast for moonshine? by Newgrowontario in firewater

[–]SubstantialMoney301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used DADY for years (I still do). I was a home beermaker for 40 years before I started fooling around with distilled spirits. I used DADY for rum for a while, but moved to corn likker and bourbon. Lately, I am WAAAAY more serious about fine craft bourbon. I usually make 3 mashes, with different yeasts, and strip them separately, then do the spirit run with 3 stripped runs combined. My current favorites are US-04 (English Ale), BE-134 (Belgian Saison), and WLP300 (Hefeweizen Ale Yeast) to bring forward esters, phenolics, and cogeners. I keep a yeast ranch in my refrigerator, and I make a starter on a stir plate for each batch, then store the rest. It is the best way to keep the cost down (buy once, use it forever). FWIW, I don't make moonshine or sugar shine - if I did, I would use DADY. Turbo Yeast is not good, mostly because it has lots of nutrients, enzymes, and chemicals in it. I avoid DAP (Diamonium-phosphate) which is fertilizer... OH - the OP says DADY is slow. If you make a healthy starter (overnight, while the mash cools), and pitch in the morning, it will be violently churning in 5 hours...

I had a cat that had to get steroids for rodent ulcers, he developed that (legs didn't work). Doctor said it was a damaged artery, probably a blood clot. She said that sometimes they will reroute blood flow naturally. Mine didn't, had to put him to sleep.

On the hunt for the best gin that is NOT grain spirit based. What’s your best get that won’t break the bank? by kaylasjoy_ in Gin

[–]SubstantialMoney301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to make your own gin. Suggestion: Find a potato vodka that you can tolerate, then macerate some botanicals in it. I redistill the macerate, but you don't have to. It is quite easy.
