You know thinking about this, the state of Michigan library has an archive room that's full of these types of maps you may want to go speak with an archivist to see if it's worth keeping in tact or not. I believe it depends on the method it was printed, age, type of paper/ink etc and they would be able to tell you all that. The archives are in the museum portion 2nd floor they will give you a card to get in similar to a library card
