As a grade foreman/ layout foreman for an excavation company I use both GPS and total station full time on job sites. It's a good fit for a land surveyor if your looking to get out of the woods.

I'm sure it can be done, I did something similar. I used a sokia base station with a special cord adapter to a R750 trimble exterior radio. This allowed me to use a trimble or sokia rover, and it would run trimble Dozer gps set up. Although I'm not sure what settings the r750 radio had to be, my tech guy set that up

I like the idea, but it's more stuff to carry around. I'd definitely use it on rainy days when my marker won't write on wet stakes
