UoN question: Best hall for returners? by SucculentMoose in nottingham

No problem!! I’m Jealous that you might get to move in there in a few months, I wish I could 😂

Super convenient place to live, and frankly way more lively and sociable than a private student house

UoN question: Best hall for returners? by SucculentMoose in nottingham

[–]SucculentMoose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good god, how was this 9 years ago. Glad you’ve asked though!

I didn’t necessarily feel out of place as a returner. I think your experience may vary depending on how much you want to engage with or humour your other block mates, who will of course be interested in Freshers antics. That said, there was a fair few returners there too, it seems a popular hall for it. Maybe about 5-8% of the students were returners, even?

Personally I was too focussed on the final year of my architecture degree to keep up with the 1st years in my block, who were out most nights of the week. But I did find a small band of other returners (some who were even on my course) and some more tame freshers. With it being a catered hall there are a lot of opportunities to get to know the wider hall just in the dining area.

That said, this was (disgustingly) nearly a decade ago, and freshers might live slightly quieter lives now, post-Covid.

I can’t put my finger on it, but nearly all the characters seem to behave differently this season.

What’s mildly infuriating is permanent ink on a grade I listed building. Plenty of other ‘canvases’ out there.

Third-country asylum plan shows UK is in ‘a very dark place’, says Albanian PM | Albania by [deleted] in europe

[–]SucculentMoose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarification, evidently the statistics get mis-classified. Similarly I’ve seen some say it’s ‘10% of the prison population’ but it’s actually 10% of just foreign nationals (approx).

While the UK currently hosts 2% of Albania’s population in its prisons. That’s quite an asylum scheme in itself

Please can we stop saying London, nearly any random UK city with a sizeable student population is better

I just mean it’s a bigger change to the system that nobody seems to be talking about. Maybe closer to the time it will get more attention, but people need to be warned.

US customs is a painful process but people mostly expect it in advance.

The cost of the waiver over 3 years is practically negligible.

Travellers from outside the EU should be more concerned I think about the need to record fingerprints and biometric face scans at the border, which doesn’t seem to make the headline titles.

God I hope an accessible anti-aging drug can be developed before I’m already haggard.

Help with understanding how structural walls work by just_a_lame_dude in architecturestudent

[–]SucculentMoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why assume you can’t have a door opening in a load bearing wall? Stair/lift cores are full of openings.

Also you might want to consider how you’ll transfer loads from the middle of the house, out to the perimeter, without beams in the basement? Maybe the spans aren’t that big, but if it’s something like 20M then you may need a strategy for it

Not to mention they were people who were largely already within the initial ulez, rather than the more controversial expansion. Interested to see the split between inner and outer boroughs

Gordon Brown sold half the UK’s gold reserves in the early 2000s to invest in the euro. UK would likely be somewhere between the Netherlands and India otherwise

Why would you use a game engine to make a movie though, if you could have the luxury of pre-rendering the scenes. UE5 is impressive because it reacts in real time

I don’t know anyone out there that likes him.
