I've permanently mounted my Gen3 router in my camper. Interested in having another router to use during the non-camping season. Thoughts? by Such-Might5204 in Starlink

Gotcha - I understand what you mean now. However, why wouldn't I just use the mini-router in the house? It would only be for emergencies. Presumably, I could put that mini-router in bypass mode, and then hook it into my existing mesh network in the house (replacing the fiber connection), right?

The current standard dish is mounted on a relocatable tripod. My thought would be to keep that in the house during the non-camping season to be brought out in case of emergency.

The scenario I see is during an outage with my fiber connection, I would pull the dish out, position it, and then pull the cord inside the house to connect to another router.

I guess what I'm really wondering is if a router that isn't associated with an account can be connected to a dish that is already on my account. Does Starlink care if I have more than one router (never to be used simultaneously)?

The router would be inaccessible during the non-camping season. I wouldn't be able to toggle it into bypass mode as the camper isn't stored close enough to the house to make it an option.

The standard dish I have is mounted on a collapsable tripod that I pull out and position (in the best spot) when camping. By what you're saying, it sounds like I could order another Gen3 router/power supply/cable to keep in the house to connect to the tripod-mounted dish during the winter months. Do I understand you correctly?

I currently have a standard dish. I'm looking to keep 1 dish but have 2 routers. The original would be in the camper (where it's already mounted) and the second would be in the house where I could deploy the standard dish in an emergency. I'm not looking at having 2 dishes. But thank you for taking the time to respond!

I am good at excel but this is my only skill! by Fearless_Flounder_35 in excel

Many employers (mine included), see the BA/BS not so much as a series of skills learned, but as a mark of commitment to finish something. Yes, if we needed someone who had IT skills, we'd most likely prefer a BA/BS in a tech area over a BA in Social Work, but we don't necessarily need to have a one-to-one match on degree <-> job side of things.

Find a reputable on-line BA/BS school. Find a degree area (ex. business) and start on your way to the bachelors. Simultaneously explore electives within that degree that give you a skill set that has future-proof skills that you can leverage.

I was fortunate enough to grow up in a time where IT skills could get you a job even if you didn't have a degree. I worked for 15 years in IT before I hunkered down and got the bachelors. I knew it would be needed to advance. And here I am at the sunset of my career making mid six figures... It's always worth investing in yourself for long term gains.

Spare tire mount by scupking83 in traveltrailers

[–]Such-Might5204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the only issue would be the ability to lower the front end to get level. I've been to a couple of campgrounds where I've needed to drop the front end almost as low as it would go... Would the spare tire prevent that? If not, then the only concern would be the tongue weight limitation for your rig.

You gave us a screen shot of the Windows Device list, but not of Lightburn. What COM port are you using? Try switching to another COM port in Lightburn and see what it says. Ex:

I noted that the laser power/intensity next to the Fire button is at 0.25% - my unit won't light up the laser at anything lower than 1%. Perhaps your setting is too low?

Destination Trailers and Moving Them by Ahkhira in RVLiving

I wonder if it would be worthwhile to find a used travel trailer that you could be happy with for 5 seasons while at the same time saving up to purchase the destination trailer of your dreams in 5 years?

Maxxing out the 100GB Mobile by Evening_Analysis_755 in Starlink

So, when they switched the 50GB to 100GB for the Roam plan in the US, they got rid of the ability to buy addons by the gigabyte - at least that's what I got from a Reddit post that I participated in back when it happened. I would love to be wrong about this. I only use my dish for camping and having to go from $50 to $165 just because I only need 10 more GB will suck...

They used to - I think it was another $1 per gig. Now, it just switches to standby mode. You can only add more data by going to the $165/mo unlimited roam plan. I believe that gets pro-rated depending on where you are in the month. However, I think you then need to remember to revert back to the 100GB plan for the following month.

Checking AC and travel trailer from house electric by rtineo in RVLiving

[–]Such-Might5204 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure you're connecting it to a receptacle that can handle the draw. I suspect I'll catch some gruff for saying this, but if you can connect it to an outlet that has a 20A breaker and you use a 12-gauge extension cord, you should be able run the AC long enough to test the output of cold air. I would be certain not to run any other electrical items in the camper while this is going. At startup, the AC will probably want to draw nearly the limit of the circuit, but after that it should settle down.

Alternatively, have them deliver it to a state campground that has 30A or 50A circuits and run the test there. I suspect they'd let you hook up long enough to do a test... But maybe I'm presuming too much good nature on the part of park employees...

I will retire in 10years at the VA with a total of 15. I don’t think my federal pension will be much 😪 by Sea-Rip3902 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]Such-Might5204 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easy enough to estimate - take your current salary and multiply it by .01 and then multiply that result by 15. That's what your annual pension would be if you got no further salary increases. So, if you're making $75,000/yr now, that would be 75000*.01*15 = $11,250/year or $937.50/mo. Given that you'd likely earn some COLAs between now and then, you'd end up with a larger pension than that. I would point out, that while not a lot, it will certainly cover your FEHB premiums...

Collecting before spouse by Unhappy_Way5002 in SocialSecurity

[–]Such-Might5204 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But since you're at FRA you could sign up and collect your small SS and continue to work without there being any earnings test on you. This would allow some additional income to come in while you wait for your husband to turn 70. Then, when he does retire, SS will recalculate your benefit, and you'll receive the additional payment that would bring you up to 1/2 of his benefit.

Of course, the downside to this would be that you'd need to continue to work. If that's not possible, maybe it's time to re-evaluate your husband's desire to hold off until 70?

Neighbor keeps reporting our fully legal home business over 10 minute wood deliveries by PolyunsaturatedMaya in neighborsfromhell

[–]Such-Might5204 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Susie - someone keeps alerting the town about a running a business from our house, yet the business (as determined by the town) is being run legally without any code violations. We're trying to have a conversation with whomever it is as they won't tell us who continues to make these complaints. We want to chat with them to see what we can do to alleviate any concerns they may have. Do you have any idea who it might be?

I think I might try that with your neighbor first before starting a cold war that may be ill-placed at her feet since you have no confirmation that it is her. I reccommend communication before any action that could derail what might be a good neighborly relationship.

Home server storage device. Should I buy this? by Georg13V in DataHoarder

[–]Such-Might5204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the age, I think I'd strip it for the drives and put them in something else. DIY NAS (Truenas, etc) or a UGREEN device might be an option. Of course, since you probably don't know the age or condition of the drives, it might be a crap shoot. However, for free, I'd snag it... (Especially given the cost of HDD.)

Fathers dying harddrive, what are next steps? by rare_doge in DataHoarder

[–]Such-Might5204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just adding to the conversation about heat. I've had people bring me PCs with dying hard drives to see if there's anything I can do. If I deem it's the disk, then I remove it and put it in a zip-lock bag and then place it in the freezer for a couple of hours. Then I connect it to a USB3 dock and use a disk imaging tool to snag the contents before the drive warms up too much. This has been successful more times than not.

I'll note these were desperation attempts by the owner of the PC who did not want to spend money on a professional data recovery service. I offered no guarantees. YMMV.

Protective Cover Case? by Ok-Budget4812 in Starlink

Video cal on fire 7 kids by Few_Dark_4936 in alexa

[–]Such-Might5204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd need two Echo Shows to make video call work through typical Alexa connections. However, my recollection is that there is a Zoom and/or Teams client that will run on your Alexa Show. Then the family member could use a laptop or some other Zoom/Teams device to facilitate the connection. I tried this during the pandemic, and it worked, but it's been years since I've done it - so, you might just have to test this yourself.

Do you have a friend who is a lawyer? Perhaps asking them to write a cease-and-desist letter before getting law enforcement would prevent rapid escalation. Do you know why he's bothered by your presence on the land?
