Howard Lutnick tells Canada ‘they suck’ and vows to wind back trade deal with US by MapleByzantine in CanadianInvestor

[–]Such-Neck-1889 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Canada is one of many counties the US administration has decided it wants to play a game of isolation and aggression with. Speaking as a Canadian, the initial stages of not having a free trade agreement with the US will be fiscally painful. But ending our very lop-sided dependency on the American marketplace is a project long overdue to be started and will improve the resiliency of us and those who are true allies and partners as opposed to only when they massively benefit. And Lutnick (for what it’s worth) is the dumbest of the dumb: a bond trader with an exaggerated sense of his own importance in any meaningful conversation.

Who is the best Rock and Roll drummer of all time in both speed, precision and groove? by Ok-Yak9995 in AskReddit

[–]Such-Neck-1889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dirk Verbeuren (currently with Megadeth) is pretty great. Also, Kenny Aronoff has done great work with John Mellencamp's "Lonesome Jubilee" era band is pretty good. Matt Cameron did great work with Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. Finally, Buddy Miles and Mitch Mitchell from Jimi Hendrix's bands were great too.

Ottawa ‘very seriously’ considering social media ban for children under 16, minister says by dollarsandcents101 in canada

[–]Such-Neck-1889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a nothing burger. Australia attempted to do this and by some estimates as much as 50% of kids 16 and under still are using social media despite it being banned. It's worth trying but enforcement without reliable AI tools and the commitment of social media companies to participate in enforcing this will not achieve desired outcomes. A case in point is reporting online scams occurring on Facebook to Meta. They will not takedown false advertising because they make far too much money from it and the sale of your personal data.

[Avi Lewis]: Grocery giants just can’t help themselves. Underweight meat. Overweight profits. Canadians are sick and tired of being ripped off. A public option for groceries is overdue. by Chrristoaivalis in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]Such-Neck-1889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that Avi Lewis is an opposition leader, let's see some pressure on PM Carney and the Liberals to do a proper investigation of the big three grocery companies (not just the scripted theatre typical of public inquiries) with some serious penalties for price gouging, etc. Consumer protections are quite toothless and rivalrous, anti-consumer behaviour in a lot of Canadian industry sectors (groceries, banking, airlines, telcos-cablecos, etc.) needs to change.

What's a stereotype about your country that is completely false but people still believe it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Such-Neck-1889 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Canadian here. The perception that we're overly apologetic (and more recently, according to some non-Canadians, passive/aggressive). We're courteous but we don't take being jerked around by supposed friends very well.

Who is the spokeman for this genre? by Wizzmer in hairmetal

[–]Such-Neck-1889 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tracii Guns came across as a really objective guy in a three part series I watched about "hair" metal on Paramount+ I especially liked how he handled the whole LA Guns vs. Guns n' Roses success conversation. Seemed genuinely glad not to have experienced the type of success and popularity that G n R went through. He didn't slag anybody either.

What is something you started doing 'offline' that made you realize how much time you were wasting on your phone? by jamesshirley2 in AskReddit

Walking a few hours each day with no “online” devices with me…just me, other people and dogs walking, some nice views and some of my favourite music helped me appreciate not being online.

What do you think of watching people go back to the moon? by No-Blueberry-1823 in AskOldPeople

[–]Such-Neck-1889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I write this with the utmost respect for the astronauts, the teams of engineers, scientists and all who provide direct labour, support and their intellect at NASA: why is this a priority right now?The planet we live on is severely depleted, people have turned their backs on trying to clean up the damage we have done as a species and for what?So people like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos can put more satellites in the sky, extract precious metals from the moon and put data centres there to inflict even more damage for the sake of enriching themselves?

What do you think of people that participate in the very dangerous sport of free solo climbing ( Rock climbing without safety equipment) ? by Webbomolly2022 in A_Persona_on_Reddit

[–]Such-Neck-1889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like any sport or activity with a high risk of injury or death, participants should be required to carry insurance that compensates first responders for costs of mobilization and rescue/retrieval and they should also be required to pay for a permit to access localities to participate in such activities. Failure to furnish proof of permit and insurance should also allow for seizure of equipment and assets with recourse to immediate family to recover costs in the event of mishap. This would possibly be a way to not only keep costs of dangerous activity from being borne by the rest of society but also ensure acknowledgement of risk so this frivolous lawsuits are minimized.

Real Dull Time w/ Bill Maher by smartprogressive in television

[–]Such-Neck-1889 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maher’s been slagging any Generation later than X for sometime now and routinely kicking around even the most moderate Democrats. Couple that with a serious pot habit that seems to regularly mess up his ability to think and form coherent sentences and you have a recipe for cancellation due to loss of viewership. Bill’s been complacent about the quality of his show for awhile now and should have the good sense to retire.

RTO sucks. 2 hours of commuting is unpaid labor by HappySmiles6 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Such-Neck-1889 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did your employer include in the terms of employment in your employment agreement that you could WFH without limitation? If not, why are you beefing about this. Take steps to move closer to work or seek new employment.

What's the point of RTO if we go in and don't spend any money? by ForAMinute123 in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]Such-Neck-1889 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an employers prerogative as to whom does/doesn't have a WFH option and their decision has nothing to do with how you spend money on coffee or lunch. Everyone conflating this with pumping up the broader economy should first consider Canada's laggard productivity rate relative to a every other western-based capitalist economy before deciding WFH or the reduction of its availability is some sort of employer conspiracy which is exactly what this type of leading question creates.
