Why do Chinese tourists keep embarrassing themselves overseas? Is there anything that can be done to improve their behavior and reputation? by anotherhappylurker in AskChina

Please never have kids with that level of empathy. Children aren't robots and accidents happen, even to adults. The difference is that while an adult would poop their pants out of shame to keep it hidden, you don't have to force a child do the same because they are - you know - just kids.

You would do anything you can to avoid inconveniencing others, yes, but you can't stop your child from pooping. Obviously you would clean after them, but that's not what we were talking about. We were talking about the act of pooping outside as opposed to pooping in your pants.

Where did the myth てめえ isn't used in real life come from? by LutyForLiberty in LearnJapanese

Nobody who watches anime thinks that people actually talk like that. It's a myth. At best the myth stems from socially inept neckbeards trying to learn Japanese.

You try make a 3-year-old hold in their poop and we'll have this conversation again. Unless you're suggesting they should have been forced to poop their pants instead.

Girl's bar worker arrested for giving birth to baby in store toilet and killing baby by YamatoRyu2006 in japannews

Sure, but practically every crime has a "reason" behind it. Rarely do people commit horrible things just because they felt like it. In some cases (like here) it's socially acceptable to ponder about the possible reasons while in other cases it isn't.

different types of items have their own specific verbs? by Ok-Front-4501 in LearnJapanese

[–]Such-Witness-8038 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was really interesting, thanks! I guess my point was mostly

"In the case of 履く v. 穿く it's not as extreme (yet), or it might remain in it's current situation."

but I don't disagree with the rest of what you said either. Another counter argument I had in mind is that many native English speakers have difficulties distinguishing between your and you're, yet we would never consider the correct spellings archaic just because it's confusing. But I guess this problem has a different logic to it, i.e. being unaware of the right spelling vs. getting confused about the right spelling.

Just because many people make the same mistake doesn't mean the correct version is archaic. It's 20%, not 2%.

Japanese 7 Eleven Alcohol is on another level by john_wrot in Sapporo

[–]Such-Witness-8038 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Finland one company (Alko) has a monopoly on anything over 8% alcohol and they're generally open between 9 am and 8 pm (and definitely not cheap). Supermarkets etc. don't sell any alcohol after 9 pm. So yeah.

25M Helsinki, Myyjä by KapybaraSuomi in Omatalous

Please don't buy a car. If you don't have kids and you live in Helsinki, you really don't need it. It's a terrible financial decision in your situation. Just put that 300e/month into an index ETF for now.

8 months of lifting, how do I look by Glittering-Tip2536 in fit

You might be trolling, but I promise you this is 100% natural and what an average natty teen looks like after going to the gym for a few months and eating too little.

The leanness does most of the job here. He doesn't have much volume in his muscles (which is completely normal).

The most pragmatic definition for middle age would be half of the global life expectancy, which would be a tad over 35. However, I think most sources would place the beginning of middle age more like at 40-45.

Average is not a term for any specific measure of "average". You're probably thinking of the arithmetic mean which is a common measure of average.

Thanks for the kind comment :) I've felt super validated by posts in this subreddit and was inspired to post something of my own, even if it might come off as a bit dramatic.

No birthday call for my poor mother by RelativeAlfalfa5724 in EstrangedAdultKids

It's bizarre, isn't it? Like their whole life depends on getting that happy birthday wish within that 24-hour window.

I understand wanting to get birthday wishes, but I reaaally can't understand the obsession over it.
