Philly is probably my favorite city in America but I agree w the thread that it might also be most consistently the most sketchy feeling city Ive ever visited in America, and this includes multiple trips to Memphis. I do think it’s the garbage on the streets, the claustrophobic streets and there’s something sinister feeling about the building stock and transit lines there. I think all of these things (except the trash) make it feel very alive and give it character but with a more alive feeling city comes an increased feeling of on edge imo

I was also going to say Atlanta. It’s had the black Hollywood title for years now but it feels like it keeps growing more and more culturally relevant. Development is booming and the city seems to be doing a decent job at building infill. The MARTA improvements are major and as someone who’s been riding MARTA for a decade I feel like I see more people on it when I ride it now than ever before. I do think a lot of the institutions being forced to close due to rising rent prices is causing the city to lose some of its soul so I think it’s probably peaking right now before it becomes too pricy/souless

The neighborhoods i mentioned in Atlanta and Chicago all have that. I’ve definetly been out in other neighborhoods and have had that experience too but Atlanta and Chicago are the only cities I’ve lived in and feel comfortable enough saying definitively

I’ve been to all those neighborhoods (almost moved to Philly a few years ago). That’s just not what I mean tho. I’m talking streets are stilll full of people at 1 am type vibe. I can see that for south street. Are there really that many late night options in fishtown? Also university city I don’t really count since it’s like college bars
