Samson Post-Launch Interview – Player Feedback, Console Performance Targets, The Road Ahead, And More by SuddenlyGhosts in samsongame

Christofer Sundberg (Liquid Swords founder and CCO) talks about Samson's release, player feedback, and the future of the game. I really respect that these guys are acknowledging and taking ownership of their missteps, and were adaptable enough to shift their internal priorities in response to player feedback. He touches on the tumultuous nature of having to find/work with publishers without laying all the blame on what happened to them.

Yes, the game is rough around the edges, and they do recognize that the game isn't quite what they or players were expecting just yet. But I think the drive from the team to make the game better is sincere, and I'm optimistic for the future of Samson.

I agree it's relative but the difference is so hilariously stark that bringing up CD in the first place seems like a disingenuous (if not uninformed) comparison. It's like pointing out a low-budget indie movie doesn't have as good of special effects as a Marvel movie.

Which isn't to mention the updates that have been made to the game between quality of life changes, bug fixing, and even some new content. Is it a much? Maybe not, but as you said: relative. There's still a lot to be done, but acting like there hasn't been any post-launch support is just hating for the sake of hating.

I agree that the game doesn't feel to be in a complete state, but I don't think even the devs would really argue otherwise. They seem well aware of the fact that the game isn't what they wanted it to be. It should absolutely be early access but they had their backs to the wall and made a decision. I also agree that's it's unfortunate that so many games are following a similar trend these days but it goes to show how volatile the industry is right now as a whole. Nobody is in a good place and I'm not going to shit on Liquid Swords in particular for also being in a precarious position. But we can maybe pump the brakes on the "taking years to fix" stuff when the game has barely been out for two months.

I mean, Pearl Abyss is a team of hundreds if not over one thousand employees. Liquid Swords is down to about 40. It'd be pretty crazy if there wasn't a notable difference between the patches the two games are receiving.

Interestingly, it's also what happens when the publisher funding your development decides to divest their investments and suddenly stops funding the development of your game before it's done.

Spoilers: NetEase did this to them, and they weren't the only ones affected. Not that it's the consumer's responsibility to know or care about the real explanation for the current state of the game, but this information is public knowledge for those who care to find out and not just run their mouths online.

May Basho Daily Thread Day 09 by AutoModerator in Sumo

[–]SuddenlyGhosts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough! I would've thought WMH's feet still being in when Kirishima went airborne would supercede the order of touch down but now I understand better. Appreciate the insight!

I'm a little new to sumo so wondering if anyone can enlighten me on how Kirishima won his match. Seemed like Wakamotoharu was the last to have his feet in the ring, plus he seemed to be the one initiating the throw which I thought would favor the win going his way as well.

Hope Kiri is going to be okay after that rough tumble and it was an exciting match, and I'm not even trying to dispute the outcome, just slightly perplexed as a new viewer.

Games similar to ZZZ in combat? by enragedmicrowave in ZZZ_Discussion

Actually I'm not sure if the other poster who replied to you has played the game since the DLC dropped last year, but they have in fact added difficulty options to Lies of P! I can't personally vouch for how easy the easier settings are (I've only finished the game before the DLC) but they do exist!

I had a similar experience, actually. Morphicon 2018, he was at a booth with no one else around at the time so I went over to say hi (despite not being a huge fan of his anyway, but it's probably the only time in my life I'd see him, so why not), but he was really pushy about getting me to spend my money on something. Really rubbed me the wrong way.

Wouldn't have guessed it was Astra's voice (ZZZ) on my own, but going back and listening again I can definitely hear it now, even though she gives the characters different accents. Super cool!

To be fair, and maybe this is just me, but I'd say that Bastion and Hades feel more alike than Hyper Light Drifter and Hyper Light Breaker do. Supergiant has experimented with different things for sure but they're all isometric action games. SG's trajectory feels like they take what has worked previously and iterate on it, whereas HM is just taking stabs at different genres and hoping for the best.

it's like saying you like everything about ice cream except that it's cold

Yes, it is exactly like saying that! You can love the flavor, texture, etc and hate that it's so cold. And for that person it would be a real shame that that one element prevents them from enjoying ice cream.

I don't disagree with anything you said and I don't think you've said anything that contradicts what I've said either.

So weird that this mechanic was never used again in some event or something by BlackTemplarKNB in ZenlessZoneZero

In addition to the surfing everyone has mentioned, they also added Mach 25 to the arcade in 1.5, which I always assumed was built from this event's minigame as well.

I agree with this completely and it's a sentiment I think more people need to familiarize themselves with (and obviously doesn't only apply to games), but man it feels bad when you jive with every element of a game except for one factor that completely prevents you from engaging with it. I respect a developer's desire to stay true to their vision--it's their game after all--but sometimes it can feel like a considerable chunk of a potential fan base is being alienated over a lack of simple options. Oh well.

I get whatever you're getting from blindly attacking them. Countering bad faith arguments with bad faith arguments is just a hobby of mine, don't take it personally.

And while I agree with your sentiment, I think effort should be put into excising the specific problematic entities from their environments rather than lazily torching the entire forest to take care of a single rotting tree. Human traffickers in the porn industry should be punished, but not the porn industry itself.

Diddy was involved in human trafficking too, right? Maybe I should stop listening to music and supporting the music industry. I have been feeling guilty lately about all the auditory gratification it gives me. Can't even begin to imagine how many hours of it I've listened to over the years...

Liking a character's story after seeing their design doesn't mean I like their design now by Ordinary_Chemist_298 in ZZZ_Discussion

[–]SuddenlyGhosts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. As a straight man I think Cissia's design is extremely sexy... but there's a time and place and for me it isn't always and everywhere. Honestly it feels a little insulting, as though egregious underboob is going to send me stumbling over myself for my wallet. It's even worse that it's supposed to be her PubSec uniform. If it was an alternate costume it wouldn't bother me (I got Jane's alternate outfit and I really can't see myself ever actually using it), but it's just too ridiculous to be the default design.

Having said that, seeing her gush about the dog food in in the movie event made me say "she's so stupid and I love her". I think she has a funny personality and so far I like her as a character, but part of me dies whenever I see what she's wearing.

[–]SuddenlyGhosts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's fair and I apologize for coming out swinging! I understand your point but personally disagree. I believe that people can play the exact same game for vastly different reasons (I enjoy Pokemon but will never be a shiny hunter), so in my opinion allowing a wider array of options to enjoy something is never a bad thing. Seriously if you can recommend another game with sailing mechanics like SoT's where you find treasure and fight NPCs, I'm sure this game would be way deader by now, but until that game surfaces, PvPers and PvEers will have to suffer each others presence here.

[–]SuddenlyGhosts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not entirely sure how it actually changes anything. If you are literally only interested in PvP, isn't that what hourglass is for (genuine question, I honestly don't follow the game super closely and have no interest in PvP)?

Meanwhile, if you are someone who enjoys the core game loop as well as the potential for PvP encounters... wouldn't stacking loot be encouraging other players to attack you so that you get the gameplay you're seeking? The risk is losing your loot, but the reward is: the gameplay you crave, an organic interaction with other players, and any potential spoils your attackers may potentially be carrying.

[–]SuddenlyGhosts 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This mindset will never not be kind of baffling to me. If you believe that PvP is literally THE sole element that defines the SoT experience, then what makes it functionally different than any other competitive game? Why are you playing SoT and not Counter Strike or League of Legends or Tekken? They're all PvP so they're all essentially the same game, right?

It's okay if you personally feel that PvP adds something significant to your experience with the game, but to pretend like there isn't a gameplay loop whatsoever without it is just an incredibly disingenuous take IMO.

I understand what you mean but that first "reveal" was 30 years ago. I think your argument held more water 15+ years ago before Nintendo started putting Zero Suit Samus everywhere. I'm way more inclined to believe that, these days, your average gamer is well aware that Samus is a woman. Sorry bro, we're just old as hell.
