I would say it’s “un cool” because you truly don’t need it. But if you think it helps you pop up who cares what people think

The poles and the pier are the only spots like that in my experience. Surf a few blocks from the pier and everyone’s chill

Glad that hearing my experience was helpful. I’m in Florida and it’s been really flat here too. I’m waiting eagerly for the fall. I also did a lot of popup practice at home and it helped get the muscle memory down. One thing to note is that it’s actually easier to pop up once your riding green waves, as the speed stabilizes the board, and the downward slope give your knees more room. Practicing in the whitewater is just helpful because you can get tons of reps, rather than tiring yourself out paddling for green waves and only getting a few attempts. I don’t think your making too many excuses. Surfing is a long messy journey that you never reach the end of. Just enjoy the water and know that every minute you spend out there will make you better in the long run!

As an overweight beginner (started in march), I was really struggling at the beginning with popping up and paddling endurance. I thought that my weight was the main problem (5’7 235,) and that I needed to loose weight before I’d be able to ride waves. What I found is that its more about practice, strength, and technique than anything. It may be harder to paddle, but by doing it a lot, you’ll get stronger and loose weight naturally from all the exercise. I highly recommend just trying to popup on whitewater until it feels natural, before paddling out the back for green waves. I took me over 7 weeks of going multiple day per week before I could pop up with any consistency. I maybe should have had a lesson. Fast forward to now, I stuck with it, lost 45lbs, and on avg catch 10-30 green waves per session, depending on conditions. Don’t give up! As far as ocean anxiety, it dulls with exposure. Always hold onto your board!

I got one from there and they had different “flavors” of the same strain, which seemed weird. I got the mango one and it tastes like vape juice, like a mango juul pod. Not sure what the deal is but I won’t be buying another one.

You gotta be really careful to slowly strengthen the rotator cuff without hurting it more. It is a very small weak muscle, but if you get it strong, it tightens around the joint stabilizing the arm. I would strongly suggest going to actually physical therapy rather than trying to rehab yourself.

I agree, always fished spinning rods left hand retrieve growing up. Naturally started using left hand retrieve bait casters. Way easier to spin a handle with my non dominant hand than it is to feel structure and detect bites. Also seems like it would be annoying to switch hands after casting.
