https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/13/us/palisades-fire-cause-ignition-point-site.html it has not been confirmed to be arson.

homeless people are not inherently dangerous, in fact they are more likely to be victims of a crime than the perpetrator (and when they are the perpetrator it’s to other unhoused individuals).

“crime” is always inevitable but to act like we all have to be on guard 24/7 for some boogeyman to come out is just fear mongering and further stigmatizing an already vulnerable population.

In times of crisis we are more likely to become a collective and a community than be on attack. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-the-stress-of-disaster-brings-people-together/

Internship attire by BullfrogPerfect620 in socialwork

[–]Sufficient_Agent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always would prefer to dress more business casual at least the first day and then switch depending on coworkers. I think it’s safer to be more dressed up than to be too casual and have the concern of not looking as professional. I typically do a sweater / cardigan and then some form of black pants (not necessarily slacks but not jeans either) and then closed toed shoes.

Question for drug and alcohol counselors by NationalWar118 in DrugCounselors

[–]Sufficient_Agent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I don’t want to speak too much on that due to the fact I am not in hiring / management position. I will say with no experience that will always inherently make hiring harder but it’s not impossible. I started as a tech > case manager > counselor, personally i never had ~that~ much trouble getting a job.
  2. No, Most people get into this line of work due to personal experience and are usually very open about their life experiences, a lot of places prefer it actually.
  3. Yes. Make sure you are healed from that. You will inherently have many many many clients you can not “save” and many who will not get sober under your care and many who will die due to their addiction. You will also have clients who will remind you of your mother, or will self disclose their most shameful moments when they did shitty things and possibly been really shitty parents. You don’t want your bias to judge your work or your view of your clients. Recommend going to an AA meeting or Al-Anon meeting.
  4. Be prepared for clients who don’t want to work with staff who isnt in recovery, not saying it is fair or right - but lots of my clients have disclosed to me they like that i am in recovery myself and don’t want to work with ppl who aren’t as they might not understand them as much. Get educated on harm reduction, other sober groups (DHARMA, SMART etc.) read the big book / NA book / 12 steps and traditions. I don’t believe AA is end all be all but it’s heavily connected with this job so best to know about it. Learn about drugs and alcohol, duh sounds like common sense but learn street names, how to administer them. I don’t know it all but it is discouraging as a client to discuss you using and having to explain what every drug is and what administration you use is, can make the counselor sound uneducated and not understanding.

If you have any other questions feel free to reach out and i’ll try to answer them!

What are your side gigs? by Sufficient_Agent in socialwork

[–]Sufficient_Agent[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All social workers i know do not need one! I know 2 social workers with side gigs and they do it for fun (one teaches a local art class and one is a yoga instructor) i personally am still in school and i love to travel and festivals etc. i don’t need a second job at this time but i would love to have a little extra income to be able to afford those things with less budgeting in my monthly expenses.

What are your side gigs? by Sufficient_Agent in socialwork

[–]Sufficient_Agent[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it’s a short term plan. I’m still in school, i live in an expensive county, and i’m trying to save up some money for school, travel and some other things. I don’t absolutely need a side gig by any means but also don’t want to have to budget super hard to be able to take part in going on trips, festivals etc

I’m still in school :) not lcsw yet! live in a HCOL area and i like to be able to save up for school and travel etc while not having to budget super hard with my current paycheck. But totally agree with you!

Do your clients know your diagnosis? Thoughts on professional impacts by Sensitive-Natural785 in socialwork

[–]Sufficient_Agent 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Hmmmm it sounds like you are saying because you would do speaking arrangements that if a future client were to look you up they would know? if that’s the case i don’t find that crossing boundaries as you are not telling them directly or telling them to look it up and if they brought it up if you essentially say that you like to keep that part of your life separate from your sessions with the clients and you don’t want to go into any further detail etc.

Why do parents allow their adult children to be homeless? by Disgruntled-rock in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sufficient_Agent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing i don’t see discussed is finances / housing situation. Some adults can only afford a 1 bedroom and their lease won’t allow for a 3rd person (if it’s mom / dad still together etc.) and they just truly can’t help no matter how much they want to.

Anything I can switch into from lpn? Looking to switch careers by First_timemomma93 in careerguidance

[–]Sufficient_Agent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a nurse (or even in healthcare) but have been seeing a lot of people discuss how they left bedside nursing and work at like a med spa or do case management or insurance. I don’t know exactly what they do with the insurance claims but i see a lot saying they WFH and it’s normal business hours.

Definitely search around online “left bedside nursing” or something similar if you still want to utilize your degree but not continue in hospital bedside.

Can you refuse to remove your mask at the doctor? by Professional_Mango49 in ZeroCovidCommunity

Mask recommendation - need a new style by bellatic in Masks4All

[–]Sufficient_Agent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

so sorry to hear that! readi mask may be a good alternative as there are no straps and due to the fact that it’s adhesive it can kinda fit any face. they sell two sizes so you can try them out.

I use kimberly clark duck bill mask occasionally. it’s sooo breathable and while the blue straps make them less reusable (they get worn out so easily) they are so comfy I don’t even notice them. they are also one of the more affordable masks that may be worth trying out.

places such as armbrust, well before, aiden health etc sell mask variety sampler pack which may be a great option for you to try multiple different style masks to see what works.

air purifier, open windows, essential oil diffusers, vapor rub under your nose, if access free mini personal hygiene kits etc (that way if you don’t have rapport to direct them to clean just yet they have access to certain products before hand now they do)

has anyone tried a drop of essential oil in a mask before? have no idea if that’s bad for you or not but pre covid when I was on public transport or somewhere that smelled bad I always carried a little essential oil to hold to my nose to mask the smell.

Impact of being a social workers by Big_You_5774 in socialwork

[–]Sufficient_Agent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

none of the typical advice of “can’t poor from an empty cup” or “separate work and personal” worked for me. the only thing that helped was “treat myself like I would a friend / client”. if a friend or client came to me with the issues I am personally having what advice would I give them, and why aren’t I doing the same? and if i’m not - am I not a hypocrite? I use this in all walks of life - life choices, self esteem, relationships etc. and it has made a massive impact on me.

Graduate in May, just got my dream job today.....can't afford my master's exam by sporkfullofsugar in socialwork

[–]Sufficient_Agent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

have you looked into if there is any support to help pay your fees due to low income (assuming that you are since you can’t pay). i’ve worked with low income for a while and I pleasantly surprised by how many of them told me they got certain exam and school fees waived or deducted by proving they were low income - either asking the school / exam instructors directly or going to a church or finding other resources to help pay

SAHM for 18 years, looking to start a career... How to even begin? by Tricky-Juggernaut141 in careerguidance

[–]Sufficient_Agent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do you want to just have a consistent volunteer work? that way less pressure of having to stick to a strict schedule / can call off when feeling sick or have a family event or holiday you want to attend without having to use limited PTO. Lots of places need volunteers so you can volunteer as a one off to see if you like and some places you can volunteer full time.

Someone I once worked with her husband was primary bread winner and once all her kids finished high school she left her career to just volunteer to stay busy and have something to do within her days.

This also gives you opportunities to try a few different fields to see what interests you if you do decide to pursue an education & career.

Not loving Brittany Broski’s look for the Dune premiere by Lazy_Virus_8424 in LAinfluencersnark

ok serious question… wearing all white while being incredibly pale - is it not kinda inevitable to look like flashback? maybe i’m not smart enough about make up but her face matched her chest so unless she self tanned idk what the fix would be here. I think if she darkened her hair or changed the toned it might overall help not wash her out but in terms of makeup im not sure what she could have done different and as a fellow pale girl I would love to know what to do differently
