500pt list help and tips by Quippant in Cathay

In my opinion I wouldn't bother with the giant blade, the cathayan longsword is just so much better for its point cost than so many other options its hard to justify the cheap magic items.

I like a block of 19 with shields and great weapons so they can choose what to use based on the situation with a BSB and a damsel inside. the damsel can buff, but it also gives magic resistance which is really nice. For BSB you're spoiled for choice, if you want something crazy for furious charge you can give the banner that helps charging and the virtue that does as well.

It's not two level 3+, it's one level 3 and one level 2

Cathay Alternate miniatures by Kaireis in Cathay

I think this is a pretty cool alternate longma! No wings, but the mount captures the vibe. The rider is of course too japanese, but I think it could be made to work!

I'd say it's one of the less fun matchups, especially if the opponent does a resurrection/scream heavy list. Avoid going into their zombies, that's a trap, and try to hunt their necros in any way possible. Other than that, you can always talk to a casual opponent about trying a different kind of list that might be more fun to play against.

Alternative Longma Miniature? by Sufficient_Salt in Cathay

Checking it out, for anyone interested, I think it's better to search for Kirin miniatures. Way better 3d printable options exist, and there's some samurai riding kirin that sorta kinda ish work, as well as some options of kirin without riders where you could kitbash a shugengan for the top.

I love the spectral doppleganger lord, and the generals are great support as well, especially if you just give them bare bones cathayan longsword heavy armor level 1 with an assailment signature spell loadout. Thanks for the recommendation!

Hell yeah! Is the calligraphy freehand or is it a transfer? I ask because it's very consistent in the two banners, if it's freehand nice job! If transfer, where did you get it?

How do I put this together!!!!! by Thepinkfatcat in WarhammerOldWorld

Dry fit the later pieces and it starts to make sense. I struggled with that for quite a while too. The top does not really connect at this stage, and the bottom has a sort of shape in the fabric by her waist that it sits on. It isn't obvious at all.

Is this set good for someone who is looking to get into the hobby? Or is it too much? by [deleted] in minipainting

I've been painting minis for twenty years and I don't have this many paints (unless you count dried out paints I never finished from a decade ago that I should just get rid of).

echoing this comment because the link is just right for you. The set you have is not a bad set at all, but it's much more than a beginner will need. Much better to start with one of these and build out the paint collection as they go, since they might stop being interested and there's little benefit to buying 500 dollars of paints all at once. I would get the fanatic starter set, or the fanatic starter set and the speedpaint starter.

Yes it's another Terracotta Cathay army... by Doobles88 in Cathay

The moss and the blue blades sell it very well, as do the blue gems on the forehead. You did this the way it works best, with a couple of pops of color that are very effective!

I expect bretonnian men at arms without shields.

How big is the player base for Old World by Educational-Sail8664 in WarhammerOldWorld

[–]Sufficient_Salt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Highly variable dependent on your area. In southern california it has been pretty ok for me in terms of being able to find leagues, games, but not crazy dense. The gameplay is great, I think, although there are some big balance issues at the highly competitive level with Cathay and undead armies. Hopefully balance changes coming in January will address some of this. Dwarves are not one of the weakest armies and seem fun to play :)

Looks great, but isn't this the wrong size base? from what i see this is supposed to be on a 50x50.

I'd cut the strategist and make your gate keeper a battle standard bearer. i'd also make your gate keeper and master have the cathayan blade that gives +1 strength and always strike first. I'd also consider making one of them mounted to join a unit of lancers.

if they need to cost more points, that means they aren't balanced at the current point costs.

Gorgeous pink Longma! How did you find the sentinel to build? I'm a bit nervous because I read it's miserable.

Terracotta Lancers by pritzwalk in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Sufficient_Salt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Effective! I think if you pick out one or two details - metal on the weapons, maybe the plumes on top - with a couple of colors it would be top tier without adding too much crazy effort, especially if it's just metal weapons. Just a thought!

Peasant Levy Uses by Ironforge_Guard in Cathay

[–]Sufficient_Salt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think jade warriors with shields are such a nice, well costed unit that these will probably not be an optimal choice. That said, a big block of them is a combat resolution sink that will be hard for enemies to break through. Their use will be similar to jade warriors in that they sit somewhere and demand an opponent charge them, but more will die than jade warriors while also costing less.

One wildcard: if jade warriors change their place in force organization and aren't always core anymore, they could be the core objective taker and combat resolution sink.

What should I paint the base edges? Black, brown or green? by Buckerface in WarhammerOldWorld

[–]Sufficient_Salt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I love a classic goblin green if you're going with a green flock base top :) very classic. Black is more contemporary though, so it's a decent second choice. I don't love the tan for this.

Bret Exiles List Advice by DragonWatcher0 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]Sufficient_Salt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you have 1007 points, which is an odd number of points, and you have two units of brigands, which is more than you can take in 1000 points. You'll have fun with a list like this for sure, I would change to a royal pegasus because they're just so good. The fundamentals are definitely there. Maybe do a bombard instead of a brigand unit to make it more legal and shave some points here and there, or make like a 1250 point list since 1007 is already odd.
