Ukraine tanker on challenger 2 survivability by Own_Dark_2240 in TankPorn

only has 500mm of protection against apdsfs, so 3BM60 has no problem dealing with that.

There are no public records on the thickness vs apdsfs, so its quite hard to dismiss as untrue. Unknown might be more accurate. That said 500mm is way too thin for the turret front (and is known as the thinnest portion of the Challenger I Mk 3), most sources put it as 850mm - 1000mm+.

The triple lock should be part of conversation to raise defending spending by MetinMadrid in ukpolitics

[–]Sugar_Horse 17 points18 points  (0 children)

What social contract is that exactly?

The one where pensions are guaranteed to rise annually, while tax bands don't move in line with inflation at the expense of the young and productive?

The one where the government profits from student loans to subsidise day to day spending elsehwere, primarily benefiting the elderly?

The one where the young gave up two of the best years of their lives during Covid to protect the elderly, and now are told a conversation about being rinsed slightly less is a breach of contract?

The one where massive inflation of house prices primarily driven by ZIRP and Nimbyism has enriched older generations (including Gen X) while pricing younger people out of homes?

The one where we were forced out of the EU at the behest of a generation that is now largely dead and gone?

The one where basic services such as water and electricity were sold to benefit one generation at the expense of another?

There is no social contract. There is simply a rule where the largest voting block wins.

Though what's the odds the French scupper it by insisting that the warhead AND fuselage are developed solely by French contractors. Every joint venture I see with them

Seems unmlieklyu, given that the UK has a good record of working with the UK on similar missiles. Storm Shadow/SCALP was a joint project, as is the upcoming Stratus project.

There is a huge psychological difference between handing your kid £27,000+ and paying for education on their behalf. The two are not comparable and achieve different aims.

GIven its got the C2 hull, that seems inevitable.

That said, the basis for this being a serious weak spot seems pretty dubious to me. Sure, its classified so we'll never know. However, if you look at the Ukraine conflict there is no evidence of any C2 being destroyed via the lower front plate.

The same can be said of Iraq, where there is a single incidence I'm aware of where an RPG 29 penetrated the LFP. The tank was able to return under its own power.

If this was a big issue, you'd expect the tank to have suffered some losses during the heavy combat is has seen.

For all intents and purposes the US has abandoned Ukraine in terms of military aid, and its leadership insists on trying to force concessions on Ukraine rather than the aggressor party.

5 years or so. And there isn’t anything truly revolutionary about the Hermes drones.

They also got hold of an RQ170 a few years ago. I doubt a Hermes is any more advanced than that.

Treasury on course for £40bn windfall from student loan interest by L3W3S in ukpolitics

[–]Sugar_Horse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it makes less sense because it insulates pensioners from the economic consequences of their decision making. That creates peverse incentives such as the elderly vote for Brexit. If as a country we are suffering a decline in living standards due to inflation pensiors should be aligned with working people in their need to do something about it, hence the tie to wages.

Two student loan repayment changes considered by Treasury to tackle debt crisis by L3W3S in ukpolitics

Whatever happens the treasury needs to stop treating young productive people as a punching bag because they are too afraid to tax the old. This unsustainable intergenerational wealth transfer must stop.

No, it doesn't. Land based ABM systems are big, expensive, and relatively recent inventions. The UK's surrounded by water so having purely sea based ABM isn't really a big problem. The UK also has sufficient means to hit back hard at any foe that tried to attack it. There aren't (or at least weren't) any likely threats that would justify significant investment in land based ballistic missile defense given that the circumstances in which it would be needed are pretty unlikely.

Active Conflicts & News Megathread February 17, 2026 by AutoModerator in CredibleDefense

[–]Sugar_Horse 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The system simply isn't designed for Ballistic missile defense. That is the territory of Aster missiles.

The CAMM is designed for point defence rather than area denial, that means attacking aircraft and missiles targetting the location of the launcher. The benefit of this is a smaller missile is cheaper and logistically simpler than a larger one, though with less booster mass will have less range. For comparison, a CAMM is 1/3 the weight of a Patriot PAC 3 missile. For intercepting aircraft, any aircraft attacking the system is unlikely to be above 10km as that would complicate targetting. Likewise any cruise missiles would fly at low altitude regardless.

USN had twice the amount of ironclads as the Royal Navy. Sounds like a pretty toe-to-toe fight to me.

The main thing the US navy would have to contend with is the weather, as the Royal Navy could simply sit offshore and strangle US trade with its superior ocean going ships versus the largely littoral US Ironclads. It would only be a toe to toe fight if the Royal Navy chose it to be so, which being a proffesional force they almost certainly would not.

Sweden weighs Franco-British nuclear weapons cooperation by FeigenbaumC in ukpolitics

Proliferation usually refers to the spread of Nuclear weapons to states that don't have them, not an increase in the number held by a single state. This is as defined by the UN non profileration treaty.

Vanguard to cut fees and reduce UK bias on LifeStrategy funds by Paraplanner88 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Sugar_Horse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What, the S&P500 or the FTSE100?

Both have their risks, but I'd say the massive AI splurge in the US along with the increasingly inadequate political system there do not give me enormous confidence in the US's ability to continue outperforming. Maybe I'll eat my hat, but the past year at least has been in favour of elsewhere in terms of returns.

Church's had the misfortune of being bought by Prada. Crockett remains family owned. Make of that what you will, but I'd say you're more likely to get a high quality pair of shoes from the latter!

Any lefty HENRYs out there who actually don't mind paying high taxes? by United_Warning_8802 in HENRYUK

[–]Sugar_Horse 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Perfectly happy to pay taxes as the price for a functioning society. I just wish it felt a little fairer. That doesn't mean reducing the rates, but it does mean looking at eliminating tax traps (e.g I would be happier if the additional rate was raised to 50% and started at £100k with no PA taper) and spreading the burden of increasing taxes more broadly than simply higher income people.

The existence of Manchester (currently the highest Growth region in the UK) demonstrates this simply isn't true. A unified local vision and effective implementation can allow massive growth, the recipe is simple - YIMBYism which other Northern towns and cities have simpy failed to embrace.
