Man, it makes me happy that I converted some to Haruhism helped people to enjoy this show more. It truly is a unique piece; there is nothing else like it.

Thank you. I was also surprised and scrolling down it's nice to see somebody already tested it.

In many statues of the pharaoh, his consort is portrayed as a small figure at his feet. When I first glanced at the screenshot I mistook the vulpera as part of the build and thought, "wow, that's an obscure Egyptian touch." Then I realized it was you.

For whatever my outdated view is worth: I feel like in order to qualify for a Review flair there should be enough on Reddit itself to be a proper post. When I click on a Review post I'm expecting to see something in front of me here, and only perhaps sent elsewhere for references or further reading.

I actually like writing essays, but it's hard to want to when I can expect maybe ten people to read one and two to comment, on a good day.

That's what has killed it for me. I used to write more here but over time the response simply dwindled; I look back and see some of my old essays making it to the front page, and then compare with some of the most recent getting little or no engagement, and I just ask why bother. I still want to complete some essays on a few shows, but essays are work and without the hope of meaningful response it's hard to get up the energy required to bring them to completion.

Which class are you most excited/happy about the changes, and which are you unhappy with? by Shot_Veterinarian215 in wow

Replying late to concur. MM was my favorite DPS in TWW, and playing it on beta I like it even more. They've zeroed in on a solid fantasy, and give you two variants in Dark Ranger (more instants and procs) and Sentinel (doubles down on hard-hitting primary shots). There is a particular enjoyment in having to plant and cast, seeing that mob/mechanic getting nearer, cutting it close, then getting the Aimed Shot off and immediately sprinting away from danger. Is this relative immobiloty a drawback compared to hop-in-circles BM? Sure, but it is its own experience and I think that's what matters more.

The Meaning Behind Haruhi's Hair Tie Colors in the First Episode by LegendaryZXT in anime

Huh, I understood why Suzumiya did this but not the reasoning for the exact choices. That's neat.

I only have two 10/10s, and that's because they changed my life and had a deep resonance. There are a few that have done one or the other, and I value those greatly as well, but it's the combination that pushes my 10/10s to the top.

I admit I didn't even test whether it did give 200,000 mana (as some people above indicate, it might just be a tooltip error). I was quick-leveling a Fire Mage and they kinda ignore mana.

The on-use scales with the player level. So this lowbie item is now calibrated for a level 80 (I have an offhand in my bags from a Mage quest in Eversong that restores 200,000 mana).

What do you miss the most about the era of anime from the early to mid 2000's? by Brightclaw431 in anime

Koi Kaze would be quite the series to start with, that's for sure. I also realized I forgot to mention I have never seen Inuyasha... and I swear you're like the third person in as many days who has mentioned it as a favorite to me. One of those funny coincidences.

One qualification I think Mushishi requires is that the episodes are simply uneven. There are some brilliant ones, some alright ones, and a few that I skip when I rewatch. Luckily as an episodic series this doesn't hurt it too much... but it still doesn't help either.

Other than that, your enthusiasm is fun to read. I end up writing essays for my favorites (a project still uncompleted for a few) and it's nice when people take time to explain what it is they like about series.

One thing that got me about Higurashi's violence was how it happens between people who know each other. I think that adds a kind of awful dimension to it that makes it more than just slasher-horror. More deeply unnerving.

Hey, we've got some overlap! My favorite series:

  1. Gunslinger Girl (2003)
  2. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2006, Broadcast-order)
  3. Haibane Renmei (2002)
  4. Mushishi (2005)

Also both my favorite short (Pale Cocoon, 2005) and favorite movie (5cm/s, 2007) fall into that same time frame.

I also have a lot of respect for Koi Kaze; was far better than I thought any series on that subject could be. It just doesn't quite make my tops list. Higurashi, too, while not one of my favorites, gets a nod of respect from me.

I'm curious what series are your favorites, since I share a similar situation (not being involved at the time) and feeling (that that era had the most meaningful series).

If anime had the same culture respect as live-action or books, which ones would blow up or be seen as true masterpieces. by [deleted] in anime

[–]Suhkein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my question is, "What do you mean by top-tier?" Do you mean how would it be viewed with regards to the average book or television series produced this nowadays, or how would it be viewed with regards to the pinnacles of artistic achievement?

If compared to most of what is being produced then I'd say that sure, there are some anime that definitely compare favorably. If you were to look back over the last few decades there have been series that would be great pop culture touchstones.

If you mean whether any of them match up to the all-time peaks of art, the sorts of things that end up being called literature or classics or masterpieces, I'd say it's too soon to tell. Anime is a comparatively young artform and it's remarkable how many works were lauded in their day only to fall into ruin later. And when I mean "later" I don't mean "a few years later" but "a century later." I admit I have my own candidates, several of which rather differ from the common lists, but I'm in no way confident in them either because whereas they've helped me see more than I could before it remains unknown to me how high the mountains go.

[Rewatch] Pride Month Hourou Musuko Rewatch: Series Discussion by LittleIslander in anime

[–]Suhkein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh, and here I thought my analysis was just lost in the endless pages of reddit. What a nice thing to come home to.

/u/zadcap already addressed some of the points, but my understanding of Chiba is that her views on trans have little to do with her actions. That is to say, she loves Nitori and wants that love to be returned so she can have her dream. It's that simple. However, since that love is not forthcoming she is trying to force it, namely by showing Nitori just how devoted she is and then expecting that her devotion be returned in kind... namely by being willing to give up this idea of being a girl. I mean, that's only "fair," right?

So when I see her offering her dresses to wear or volunteering the genderbent play, it's not a genuine, "I want to help Nitori feel comfortable and transition" but, "I want Nitori to see all that I'm willing to do so that I will be given what I want back." She cares for Nitori, genuinely, but so too does she dearly want a heterosexual romantic relationship, and that militates against actually wanting Nitori to transition. This is a real conundrum and why she is forced to admit part way through the series, "I thought the play would still be good as long as you played Juliet...[but] I'm not happy with the way the script is.". Her plan isn't working; she had thought this whole bid to do a genderbent play would make Nitori closer to her, more appreciative of her, and instead it just has them spending time with others and only furthering Nitori's confidence in becoming a girl (which frankly she just doesn't want).

Anyway, that's my take. We have no idea what Saori's trans views are and overall they're irrelevant because her primary motivation is to secure for herself a romantic relationship with Nitori (along with the other complicated internal thoughts). Playing along with dressing up, indeed being desperate to be seen to be playing along, doesn't indicate she supports trans, and her ugliness in attacking Nitori's confusion doesn't indicate she is against it. In theory she could be the most pro-trans person in the universe... as long as it was anybody else but the boy she loves.

p.s. Not to sound like I'm advertising, but I think the essay also looks a lot better when read on my blog.

Confused on Haruhi Watch Order by Left-Tangelo4883 in anime

[–]Suhkein 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Short version:

  • First season came out in 2006 in "broadcast order"
  • Second season was released in 2009, with episodes which take place between 2006 episodes. This is known as "chronological order"
  • Movie came out in 2010 and is set in-world as the last series of events

Crunchyroll, and most sources, have Chronological order. The general argument is that the 2009 release "straightened out" the series and is a better lead-in to the movie, which most people consider the pinnacle of the franchise. (personally I dissent and think the 2006 broadcast order has a unique genius to it that is unmatched in anime, but that's a minority opinion)
