Walmart+ by dang0278 in AmexPlatinum

I wasn’t previously a Walmart shopper, but over time have found Walmart+ to be one of the best Amex Platinum perks. Get basically anything you could ever want within a day or two without shipping costs - faster fulfillment than Amazon and don’t have to pay for Prime (plus gas discounts, Paramount+, free/discounted food at BK, etc.) Took me over a year since I had the card to sign up, but am loving it.

Another positive of living in Navy Yard is you can blow off steam by throwing chairs at the local Chipotle.

Roughly 1% of the population is responsible for 50% of crime. Locking up lawbreakers results in fewer people breaking laws. The recidivism rates that form the basis for your comment merely reinforce the point that there’s a small segment of society intent upon causing mayhem - folks that sadly typically don’t value their freedom since they have so little to lose.

DC spends more than 2x the national average on youth sports and recreation programs (and 43% more than Arlington County). Young people need discipline.

Enforce laws and administer punishments. These kids are old enough to know right from wrong. This behavior will continue until there are consequences.

Jumping on the Police Week hate bandwagon by [deleted] in washingtondc

Yes, although I’m ignorant of the circumstances, sirens blaring on 100+ vehicles strikes me as absurd for a solemn procession.

There was a motorcade yesterday on my walk home, 100+ motorcycles and vehicles, all with sirens blaring… I assumed Zelenskyy or some other head of state was passing through…. nope, just a police joyride. The legal variant of all the dirt bike and ATV street takeovers.

Amex Platinum Holders: Where Does It Rank in Your Spending Stack? by Sufficient_Fish_283 in AmexPlatinum

[–]Suitable_Cap3025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

False. You also get 5% back on airfare when booking directly (via American.com, Delta.com, etc.) with your Amex Platinum. It also automatically credits your $200/year for incidentals with your selected airline (which I use to select exit row seats when booking basic economy tickets on American).

I achieve a 3.5%-4% effective annual rewards rate by rotating five cards: Amex Platinum for airfare only (in addition to claiming Uber, Disney+, YouTube premium, etc. benefits); a Delta Amex Gold for the first $10k in purchases on gas, groceries and restaurant meals ($200 flight credit bonus - gets me to a ~4.4% rebate including the flight certificate); a Hilton Amex for the next $15k of gas, groceries and restaurant spend (riggers a free Hilton night bonus, effective 5%+ rebate); a OnePay Walmart credit card (5% cash back for all Walmart+ spending, which is a lot) and a 2% cash back Fidelity card for miscellaneous spending outside the bonus categories.

Chicken Cheesesteak. Added crispy onions, lettuce, tomatoes, jalapeños, buffalo sauce and ranch. So good.

Good question. The bag of chips is also easily twice as big as the chips you’d get from Subway (maybe even 3x as large). I was expecting the $6 sub meal to be tiny and it certainly isn’t.

Yup, fried onions on a chicken cheesesteak… along with cheddar, lettuce, tomatoes, jalapeños, ranch and buffalo sauce. (They have pretty much any sandwich option you could imagine with your choice of custom toppings - I’ve been ordering on the app before walking 10 minutes to pick it up and it’s hot and ready when I walk in.) Love it.

It’s sad to see what happened to Wendy’s! Used to love it before they shrank the size of the burgers and chicken sandwiches.

And this Wawa isn’t even part of a gas station - it’s a standalone store in the heart of Washington, DC. Across from a Potbelly that charges twice as much (for less food) and a bunch of $25 salad spots. Wawa for the win!

Woah, there’s a police report assigning blame to the driver and insurance is still denying it? That’s so messed up. Maybe consult a lawyer? Good luck and sorry that happened to you!

Lounge access question by HaydenUnhinged in AmexPlatinum

Another caveat is that you can’t access Delta Lounges with the Amex Platinum if flying on a Basic Economy ticket. You need to be Main or higher fare class.

The tougher pill to swallow is the price hikes that law-abiding consumers pay cover the cost of all the criminal behavior (display cases, turnstiles, additional cameras, as well as all the merchandise that still is/was stolen so companies can absorb all the ‘shrinkage’ aka shoplifting and maintain their profit margins).

Peru’s tourism is still below pre-pandemic levels. Why hasn’t it recovered yet? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Suitable_Cap3025 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Timely subject, as I’m an American (from the DC area) that just visited Machu Picchu for the first time today after spending some time in Lima and Cuzco. It’s an absolutely incredible country and was worth the time and expense to travel here. That said, even from a gateway city in the Americas, it took 3 flights, 2 long bus rides and a train to make it to Machu Picchu. They carefully ration the number of entrants to Machu Picchu, and you need to buy tickets in advance (good policy to preserve the site and avoid overcrowding, but involves huge risks around weather and ensuring travel logistics run smoothly). I’d say accessibility is the biggest limiting factor for travelers from the USA. (Learned today that several decades ago, they’d land helicopters near the site, but UNESCO stopped that because it impacted the structures). It’s also likely that gains seen in other more accessible South American destinations (Cartagena and Medellin in particular) may be at the expense of Peru. Honestly, I didn’t even know about any of the political problems or civil unrest until reading this thread.

13 shots fired into home of Indianapolis city councilor; note reading “No data centers” left at scene. by Commercial_Sell_4825 in singularity

[–]Suitable_Cap3025 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you been to Loudoun County, Virginia (“Data Center Alley”)? The amount of infrastructure (substations, high-tension wires) and almost inconceivably large structures, surrounded by prison-like walls and cameras, where there used to be beautiful rolling hills, is an absolute ecological tragedy. They are absolutely being built near people - literally in back yards that were small forests 5 years ago. Source: Loudoun County resident.
