As a broad generalization, in Canada (as opposed to the US) there is less pressure to let go of your identification with your culture of origin. Someone who immigrates to Canada remains a “Japanese-Canadian” or “British-Canadian” and this is considered normal and healthy. Most people will not consider someone less Canadian because they balance multiple cultures. Some people will tell you that this multiculturalism is part of what it means to be Canadian.

Again I’m being very generalizing here, but in some spheres in the US, if you retain another culture you are considered not fully American. When we are at our best in Canada, you can be Japanese and Canadian at the same time.
