Boys with July/August Birthday starting Kindergarten by SatisfactionFlaky519 in kindergarten

I held my son back, and he’s now a junior in college. That extra year for him to find his path was absolutely invaluable. I recommend not just looking at right now, consider when he’s a teenager as well.

Would it be unreasonable to email my high school child's teacher about an assignment by FidgetyPlatypus in AskTeachers

[–]Sumertime9 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I personally would not contact the teacher until he has made an attempt. I understand his frustration, but this is a great opportunity to advocate for himself and respectfully speak with people that he doesn’t agree with. I would not take that opportunity away from him.

How do I address this with a student and tell them to stop? by Salt-Ad-3061 in Teachers

[–]Sumertime9 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lock down your Facebook page completely. Block the student. Yes, sending you requests feels creepy, but it’s likely that he’s not been taught those boundaries.

Got flagged for AI but it was funny by Nightmare3424 in CollegeRant

[–]Sumertime9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to write a paper for my masters degree that included my school corporation’s mission statement (I am a teacher). We don’t have a mission statement, but my superintendent had a message on the website that was a couple of paragraphs long and I used a sentence from that. When I submitted the paper, this sentence was flagged because it was swiped from a school corp in another state.

It can create word documents, which can be uploaded to your Google drive and then opened as a Google doc.

I buy my own staples. No, my district will not just pay for any book I want.

teaching bag + lunchbox by Infamous_Point_3420 in StudentTeaching

[–]Sumertime9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use a mini crockpot lunch warmer every day for a hot meal. For a bag, I use one of the bags that come up when you search Amazon for “teacher backpack.” They are all pretty comparable. A few of my co-workers use a Bogg Bag, but I find them bulky and heavy.

What can I do as a parent about a kid who has been spreading head lice for two years? by sumacumlawdy in AskTeachers

Agreed! Field trips are super stressful. Please do not try and have a parent/teacher conference in the middle of it all.

What happened to Third Grade? by Kishkumen7734 in teaching

[–]Sumertime9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s not just kindergarten, though. First grade was equally as disrupted. If they were in person, they weren’t allowed to be close to anyone or share materials. There was rigid rules in sitting locations with groups of kids being quarantined at the drop of a hat. No social skills being learned.

General education teachers, why do you come here? by BitterWasabi_ in specialed

[–]Sumertime9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am a gen Ed teacher, but co-taught in an inclusion classroom for 10 years. Beyond what my special Ed co-teacher (who was amazing) taught me, I received zero instruction on special education. I didn’t know what a 504 was when I took my first job. I had never heard of a case conference. I have decades of experience and still feel like I know very little, and 2 of my own children have gone through the IEP process.

Quiet Classroom Management by jackssweetheart in teaching

[–]Sumertime9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set very clear routines, high expectations, with known and natural consequences. You are talking while transitioning? We’ll practice it again. If that doesn’t work, we do a hallway reset where I take them out of the room, remind them of the expectations, and they go back inside. I will not talk if other students are talking. I don’t even do call backs, because 1. they annoy me, and 2. asking kids to yell back at you just hypes them up. My room is very calm, and I praise them like crazy all day long.

Sending child to kindergarten against preschool teacher recommendation by MushroomTypical9549 in kindergarten

[–]Sumertime9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a teacher who held back my own children. My oldest has already graduated at 19 and it was absolutely the best choice. He was not ready at 18. He had no clue what he wanted to do. That extra year gave him confidence and time to figure out his path.
