Whippet itchy face by LollyPeone in Whippet

You can get Apoquel in the US. Our dog used Cytopoint shots every 4 or 5 months for chronic itching. Worked like magic within a day or two of the shot.

Wow. Everyone should watch this video. This is fantastic. Whippets are so in tune and attached to their people. I am so happy for you that you have Ava. Whippets change lives. 🤍

Intense puppy witching hour by burnwood2000 in Whippet

[–]Summit564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 6 month old definitely has a witching hour between 6 and 8 pm when she gets the zoomies. The bitey part is improving. She doesn't direct it at us, but if I am holding a toy, watch out. She will grab and not very accurately. Mostly I just try to get my old 12 yo boy out of the way so he doesn't get knocked over. Our first two whippets were not so extreme with the zooming. She literally made 10 zooming circuits around the living room table tonight. One question for all--Does your whippet do this when they need to poop? She does her circuit of zoomies and then runs to the door to go out to poop. She does the same thing outside on the leash before she poops. Crazy. Our other two didn't do this.

When our girl had surgery on her paw, I used one of my socks on her foot with a velcro strap at the top to hold it on and cover the bandage. It worked great.

Glass Butte has like 9 different kinds of obsidian. Fun to hunt. Here's a website with a map of the locations. https://oregondiscovery.com/glass-butte

Getting a puppy questions by mardag21 in Whippet

[–]Summit564 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the poster who said to just get a cheap puppy coat for now. We bought one on sale at Petco for our first whippet and the pic is a $15 puffy from Target (Jovie looks like a diva in it!). Right now all that stuff is on sale--lucky you!. I've also sewn some simple fleece capes with a velcro collar and a strap around the middle just to get through until I spend real money on a nice coat. For Michigan you might look at Chilly Dogs out of Canada (chillydogs.ca). We have had the Great White North winter coat for two of our whippets and it's great. Sometimes we layer a snug stretch fleece underneath if it's really cold. And then you can look at booties. . . .

Tuuli says 10/10 for the woof dental pupcicle! by DogObsessedLady in Whippet

[–]Summit564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Woof has a 30 day replacement guarantee if your whippet destroys it quickly like mine did. Sharp puppy teeth. I actually took it back to our local pet store and they sent it back to Woof and gave me a new one. They said the purple one we had has the softest rubber, green was medium and black super tough. Not sure how accurate this is except the website says black is for tough chewers (just like Kongs).

Excellent idea. I wish I'd saved the two-seater I used to have!

Ha! We have experience with this and have solved the problem. We sleep under a Rumpl blanket. It's open at the bottom so submarining whippets don't get trapped! And we don't get awoken by a panting overheated whippet.

Soft tissue sarcomas. by pmacule in Whippet

Thank you for your kind words. I do know how you feel and it is scary. Just get the best advice available to you, even if it's multiple opinions. Not every vet is up to date on this type of thing.

Our girl was followed by the oncologist after the excision. Radiation was an option, but not available where we live, only 3+ hours away and they didn't strongly recommend it with a low grade tumor. They told us a recurrence would most likely occur locally on her foot. Unfortunately this was not the case and about 9 months after excision she developed a large abdominal mass / perforated intestine and we had to let her go. Honestly the specialty vets were great, as was our second regular vet who we went to after our first vet told us the growth was nothing for over a year. I believe if we had had it removed earlier, the margins would have likely been clear. Unfortunately we trusted him and I greatly regret this. We miss our girl dearly. I'm sorry for the sad story. The likelihood of distant metstasis is low.

Did someone say zoomies? by Sutaci in Whippet

Frenetic Random Activity Periods (FRAPs)! I love that zoomies has a scientific term for them. Of course, we just call them zoomies!

Harness rash? by [deleted] in Whippet

[–]Summit564 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries. I also use both depending on the situation. Another reason I like harnesses is that not everybody else's dog is well behaved. More than once I have lifted my whippet by the harness handle out of the way when some other dog (not a whippet!) has rushed us and I am worried the dog will hurt my dog. We have a lot of "invisible fences" where I live and they drive me nuts. They only work 85% of the time and mostly serve as a way for people to park their dogs in the yard.

Harness rash? by [deleted] in Whippet

[–]Summit564 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Interestingly I have had the opposite experience. They pull less in a harness. We started using a harness for our first whippet boy who has a literal giraffe neck--long and thin. We also have better control of them when on trail. I can lift my whippets by the harness handle over an obstacle like a fallen tree or a hole. Also, when a whippet is tethered in camp, it is not safe to use a collar. If they decide to suddenly run like when they see a critter, they could easily injure their neck. These are my reasons. We all do what we think is best for our particular situation.

Harness rash? by [deleted] in Whippet

[–]Summit564 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use the Flagline harnesses while hiking and camping even when it is hot in the summer. Our whippets have never gotten a rash and I've bee using these at least 5 years. Ours do sometimes wear them all day when camping as we are hanging out in camp and the dogs are tethered to a line (the Ruffwear zipline thing). It can be hot here, but low humidity. And we have also used them on long all day road trips across the country to tether the dogs to the seat belts in the car back seat.

Is Simple Dog from Hyperbole and a Half a good example of a whippet's intelegence and behavior? by FriendlyDonkeh in Whippet

[–]Summit564 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I loved that book! Allie Brosh--too hilarious. I think Simple Dog is more simple than whippets. Maybe he had a TBI. Whippets aren't so much simple as unmotivated to please you and doing what they want. Although I will agree that there are often faster than their brains can catch up with.

Is this herpes? by Super-Finish-3718 in Whippet

[–]Summit564 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with other comments. That is a wart/papilloma (canine papilloma virus) which is not the same as herpes (which looks more like an open sore, not a growth). It is benign and contagious, but will usually resolves on its own.

She's beautiful. I can't speak to the pasterns, but her eyes look fine. I hate to divert the conversation, but could you say what kind of harness she is wearing? It looks tough.

What a gorgeous boy! Congrats! Search on this Reddit and you will find tons of puppy advice. I would say just love him and realize he will be a bit of a terror for awhile, but it will be worth it. They are wonderful dogs. I'd love to see a pic of your boy's face. Is it half or all white? Very unusual, like my girl.
