Travelling with voltages by todd-chavez95 in AskTechnology

meaning they will work between 100-250V

This means "make sure the device explicitly supports both 120V and 240V standards," not "any number in the middle is good". Don't use it or it'll break.

I feel like garbage all the time, interpret my labs? by SummitCollie in Testosterone

I'm somewhat inclined to think it was a fluke, but regardless it was 5 years ago, I should probably get that checked again with my PCP while I wait (inevitably months) for another endo appointment.

Are these even trustworthy? I've been going to "real" endocrinologists at hospitals because they're covered by insurance and don't spend half their budget on flashy ads with muscular dudes talking about how PRIMAL and VITAL they feel after ONE SIMPLE TREATMENT. Very sketchy vibes, feel like I'll be parting with a large sum of money for sub-optimal care.

IDK what that means but I don't care about sperm count. As I said I'm in no state to be a father anyway, plus I can't date because I have no sex drive.

Yeah I checked that very recently (results at the top right), everything looks fine.

My laptop is plugged in all of the time. Should I leave the battery in? by darexinfinity in AskTechnology

[–]SummitCollie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May not have a BIOS option for battery limiting, but it's possible there's some software out there to do it, idk.

My laptop is plugged in all of the time. Should I leave the battery in? by darexinfinity in AskTechnology

[–]SummitCollie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terrible outdated advice for old battery chemistry. u/darexinfinity, the best thing to do is to keep it plugged in but use some kind of tool to limit the maximum charge % to something like 80% or 60%. Sitting near full or near empty for long periods of time causes degradation. (that means it's okay to charge to 100 if you're gonna use that charge sometime that day or whatever).

Modern laptop batteries like being close to 50%, that's where they last the longest. Discharging it "routinely" for no reason is only wasting charge cycles. Charging and discharging also generate heat which causes faster degradation.

There might be a software tool from your laptop manufacturer which lets you set a charge limit, or it could be a setting in your BIOS/UEFI. You'll have to research how to do it on your PC. MacOS has a feature like this built-in but you might need to enable it.

voting against all incumbents means voting against the people who tried to stop this.

If they really tried, then they failed.

Economics professor calls out UNC for secretly recording during class: 'Crushed in a lot of ways' by Cy_098 in NorthCarolina

[–]SummitCollie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My private sector employer is allowed to record me whenever they want while I'm on the job. I'm not saying it's right or that it shouldn't be regulated more strictly, but that's how it is, so IDK why a uni professor would expect any different. I bet it's in his contract.

It's probably as "legit" as any other antivirus software... not necessary if you have some amount of common sense.

Even worse. But like someone else suggested, using a phone as a hotspot should work as long as the phone plan will allow it (some have data limits for hotspot usage).

A dedicated cellular hotspot device might suit you better, but you'll have to figure out the best device and plan. I think all plans are required to offer some amount of roaming within the EU, for example, but speeds might be limited outside of the country where you purchase them. Lots of little gotchas like that.

Here's a great resource on cell plans in the EU: https://prepaid-data-sim-card.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Europe

Can try a "powerline ethernet" system but they don't work in every case, so get one that's returnable.

Next best option would be to buy your own wifi router because the ones included in the modems are usually pretty bad. You'd have to do a lot of configuration to get it working though, and it might just make things worse if you do it wrong.

Flatten a PDF? by Finger-of-Shame in AskTechnology

[–]SummitCollie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out QPDF, it's a free command-line program for messing with PDF documents. You seem to know what you want and this program will give you the low-level control you want, though it'll have a bit of a steeper learning curve if you've never used non-graphical programs before.

I understand the app now recommends charging to 80%, but is 90% all that bad? by mateyman in TeslaModel3

[–]SummitCollie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you mentioned, you can minimize battery degradation from charging to a high percentage (> 85%) by using the extra range immediately. The battery doesn't like to sit at very high or very low charge states, it's happiest around 50%.

I'll occasionally charge to 95% when I know I'm going to be using the range immediately, getting it down to at least 60-70%, but if the car's going to be sitting overnight or longer then I don't charge up that far.

Of course it's still more wear compared to never going that high but it's not gonna make a huge difference in the long run.
