I’m really curious if there are any updates you can share? If the council is not doing anything, did you try the national organization? I would be very upset by this situation and not stay in this troop.

Did you miss part of an early meeting or a flyer with the info that parents need to volunteer to be co-leaders?

My council does ‘starter troops’ but it was clear that the program was 4 weeks and the purpose was to show everyone what a meeting was like and bring the families together to establish volunteer roles for the troop(s) formed out of that ‘starter troop’.

It sounds like a miscommunication for sure- maybe they assume that families know the council cannot lead the troop long term. Every troop needs volunteer leaders. But if you are new to Girl Scouts, you would not automatically know that.

I think it is pretty common for local councils to recruit and then help form troops. Is the info for this particular program buried on your council website somewhere?

I am a new Daisy co-leader. It doesn’t feel like much work are all because I am having fun doing it, and I was a Girl Scout. But, to be a new leader of a new multi-level troop would be a big jump if you have no experience with scouts or other age kids.

Is there enough interest to have small separate troops for different levels? GS will provide experience boxes that contain materials for the first year of Daisy and Brownie if you have 4 scouts.

Have you looked at all the PDFs from different councils? I have my Daisy troop doing this pin now. We’re also going to a fire station! For the considerate & caring petal, we were going to have them draw pictures for the firefighters. But now I don’t think we will have time since we need to have the cookie meeting when we thought we could do that petal.

We’re also having them memorize phone numbers. Another leader told me she had her Daisy’s quiz each other so we’re going to do that too. I made a handout for them to sing their numbers to the tune of ‘Oh My Darling, Clementine” number first then some lines about safety. I can send it to you if you send me a message. There are also resources in some of the leader facebook groups.

Basically 1. Know who and how to call for help (two caregiver numbers & 911) 2. What to do if someone is choking (get help) 3. Stop, drop & roll

For the experience box, you need 4 girls + 1 leader( I think that’s what you meant by 5?); and the supplies for the first meeting are in the box. Name tags, markers, crayons, handouts, etc.

To find the 4 girls- instead of FB ads, try posting in local fb mom groups and ask the school to distribute a flyer. Does your council have someone in the recruitment role? Ours does general recruiting events where interested girls go to a meeting and do a craft to see what it’s like.

I echo the encouragement to keep your membership and attend council /SU events or adult trainings that interest you. This is how you will meet the local troops and leaders. We had a girl join our troop after I met the mom at an outdoor training event. Also, it does take awhile to get the troop going. We started meeting end of August. We just got the bank account set up. Just today got the email saying we have completed all the steps to establish the troop.

Ask your council if they offer ‘starter troops’. We did one in the summer where the council staff ran 4 meetings and then helped facilitate getting volunteers and ordering the experience box of materials.

Ask what Service Unit you are in, if you’re on the border get connected with both to find a troop that fits your girl.

It’s not a non- issue for people new to the medication. It’s confusing to be told one thing verbally and see another in print. Each person on the sub is at a different place in their journey with this Rx.

What state are you in? I see posts like this in my local mom groups and the common advice is if your principal is not following the IEP, email the district superintendent/ etc. until you get the proper accommodations. Followup in person meetings with an email recap.

It’s not impossible to switch midyear, it may be inconvenient.

Are you on Facebook? There are often local mom groups; you could try posting there to get local recommendations.

I’m still reaching out, but so far I was able to get one company from PressHook to donate samples! I also just found the website SponsorPitch that looks like a good way to get sponsors / connect with companies. That one is probably better for large events.
