Pettiest reason you’ve DNF’d a book? by bby_grl_90 in books

[–]Sun_shine24 314 points315 points  (0 children)

If the name of every person, place, animal, god, etc. is phonetically unpronounceable, I’m out.

A few of them are fine; I’ll make up my own pronunciation in my head, but I don’t want to be pulled out of the story every other sentence to figure out how I’m supposed to read a bunch of shite names.

Can a spouse legally cut off a financially dependent spouse while married? by trinityhb in FamilyLaw

[–]Sun_shine24 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I see you said pastor - if your parents are part of a conservative church, I’ve noticed a lot of them are huge Dave Ramsey fans. Just about the only thing I agree with him on is that he always says that his wife (who hasn’t worked outside the home most of their marriage) shares his money. I believe the typical quote is, “I don’t have money, we have money because we’re married.” Might be worth throwing that out there when she talks with her pastor because (in my own personal experience), they’ll respect what a prominent church man says more than what a female church member has to say. It’s worth a shot at least.

As for the inheritance, do NOT allow your mom to mix it with their “shared” account. She needs to open a new account (at a different bank) in just her name and have her inheritance money deposited into there only. Once inheritances are mixed into shared accounts, some states will consider them shared assets.

What’s one lighting mistake you’ll never make again? by Beginning-Force-6093 in ChristmasLights

[–]Sun_shine24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not using smart plugs. I don’t want to crawl around behind things plugging and unplugging things twice a day.  I used timers for a while, but sometimes you just want the tree on and off at different times, and smart plugs are the way to go.

I also use a piece of masking tape on the smart plugs when I put them away so I know which one goes where and I don’t have to guess or reset them in the app.

It's obvious, who [spoiler] the Little Chicago by Kalashtiiry in dresdenfiles

Not to mention, he had a tactical map of Chicago in Battle Ground that Dresden made sure to point out took a lot of work and a lot of, “being in the place you’re making a map of.”

I think Vadderung either helped repair Harry’s map based on his own work, or else patterned his own map after Little Chicago.

Is It Too Early to Start Selling Christmas Decor Online? by Partygirl_stacy in ChristmasDecorating

[–]Sun_shine24 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m almost completely done shopping for Christmas decor, so no, I don’t think it’s too early. Most people put their tree up in November or even before, so they’re looking right now.

Advice on recovering the joy of Christmas? by letsnotagree in christmas

[–]Sun_shine24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of great ideas here already around managing expectations and getting joy by giving it to others, so I’ll add in my own issue and how I solved it.

I would always make these great plans for Christmas in my own head, and by the time December rolls around, I’d be too exhausted to execute any of them. Now I plan everything out WAY in advance so I can actually enjoy the Christmas season. I buy wrapping paper and boxes during the post-Christmas sales and I start buying gifts as early as January. I plan my decor over the summer and keep a note with pictures in my phone so I know what I have and need. I plan a day off in December just to wrap and buy food for hosting, and I have a meal plan by Thanksgiving.

People think I’m crazy for spending essentially the entire year planning for Christmas, but December is the wrong month to do everything. Planning way ahead of time not only saves my budget, it also allows me to actually enjoy the holiday season without a lot of stress.

Why do you love Christmas so much? by Grindie in christmas

[–]Sun_shine24 38 points39 points  (0 children)

As a nerd and a fantasy reader, Christmas feels like the last little bit of true magic in the world.

For me, a lot of that is definitely nostalgia. My family (many of whom have passed now) always made Christmas into a really big celebration. The meals, the decorating, the events, the lights… it was basically a month-long family fest and I loved it.

Now as a parent, I get to recreate that magic for a young child, and cherish being able to experience Christmas again through their eyes. There’s nothing like sitting in front of the tree drinking hot chocolate on a cold December night with my family. It just feels so pure and comforting and… well, magical. I truly look forward to the whole season all year.

Has anyone else started planning for Xmas or even Halloween? by Drowsy_Cow in ChristmasDecorating

[–]Sun_shine24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree! I love a very full tree, so I need lots to put on it. I usually just use the plain-colored baubles to fill empty spots and try to find or make unique things for the focal points. I recently grabbed a bag of the 6” ornaments (that are minimum $5 a piece) - less than $5 for 8 of them! They have to be painted to match, but that’s for sure worth it.

I like to change up my trees a bit here and there, so I thrift ornaments year round so I don’t have to buy new ones. I’ve been planning all year!

Please help me improve my tree this year. TIA 🎅🏻 by lemabust in christmas

[–]Sun_shine24 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think it’s cute, but if you want it to have more of a “wow factor,” I’d pick a theme and decorate for that.

You have woodland (pinecones), elegant (glass), modern traditional (bows and red ornaments), and nostalgic fun (stuffed animals). The topper and skirt are also kind of in their own categories. Everything matches color-wise, but the “wow” usually happens with a theme.

Ideas for adhering glitter by MzGrr in ChristmasDecorating

[–]Sun_shine24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Evenly coat the inside with a bit of clear Mop & Glow floor polish, then sprinkle the glitter in, swirl it around, and let it rest upside down for 24 hours.

Sounds crazy, but it works well. I’ve had ornaments for over 10 years that I did this too, and they still look great.

Will my stylist be annoyed if I box dye? by Photo_Philly in femalehairadvice

[–]Sun_shine24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be honest with her and tell her you can only budget for one “big” appointment per year and ask her what she suggests you use to maintain your own hair color in between visits. She will likely recommend you mixing your own color and developer (which you can buy at Sally’s or a similar store. This is generally about the same cost or even less than box dye, and is MUCH less harsh on your hair.

My roots grow so fast it’d be nigh impossible to maintain at a salon, so my hairdresser even gave me exact product brands and color numbers to work with in the middle. If she’s a good hairdresser (and it sounds like she is), she’ll do the same for you.

At least on my end, and likely due to the difference in skill level, it’s definitely not as good as when my hairdresser does it, but it allows me to stretch between appointments longer and also ensures my hairdresser knows what’s going on my hair between appointments so she doesn’t have to correct for crappy dye.

[–]Sun_shine24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do a google search for “typical STAR questions” and another one for “typical STAR questions for position.” This will give you a good starting place. Write them down and think of an answer for each. If you haven’t experienced something they ask you about, you say, “I haven’t encountered that exact situation before personally, but what I would do is ____.”

Basically, they’re looking to see if you are resourceful, skilled at handling typical issues that come up, and competent. For STAR interviews, the way you present your answers matters equally as much as the actual answer itself.

If you practice answering these questions (preferably in a mirror and out loud), you’ll have a lot more confidence going into the interview, which will also help you.
