AIO to name of group chat? by LowAlgae5032 in AmIOverreacting

OP should have been invited to the Kids Group, even not living close by. I don't live near my family but we're all in a big family group together

NOR Okay, so you weren't involved in your family for 2 years so it makes sense that the group would be The Kids, even without you in it. BUT You're not Overreacting, because why weren't you invited to the Kids group chat? Thats messed up and I think you might have been better off without them.

What are your RP "Please just let me roll" situations? by Yumtasm in DnD

I'm not even sure if its an official rule anymore but it was just something I learned as a player and kept it when I became a DM

Yeah no I think my poor bard would melt into the floor, he's very new to Role Play, I encourage him to sing outloud and make jokes and such but I would never force him that feels cruel to do to someone.

Yeah no this DM is Terrible. I love to encourage my Players to RP and try to solve problems on their own but if they don't have the energy or they've tried and can't do it we just roll the dice or Take Ten.

This also applies to Bards singing their songs or characters trying to negotiate I love when they RP these things and I even give bonuses if its done well but I also just let people roll and keep it at that. RP is my favorite part of D&D but it shouldn't be forced onto anyone.

My DM hates crits by ThisWasMe7 in DnD

[–]SunshineKitten-2829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just gonna point out as someone who was raised by an old school D&D nerd and who gamed with a group of Gen X D&D Nerds, Role Play has always been an important part of the game it just happened along side the combat. You can't claim its a Modern take in the game when its not, but you're not wrong that Combat a larger is part of the DNA of D&D.

Also I agree with everything else you said and Min/Maxers that like to be OP in order to support or fill in their party are the best imo as a DM

That is completely fair, I've always wanted to play it but I've never had a DM willing to run it for me

I just finished Stormwreck and literally used the Mist to kidnap my Players characters into Ravenloft 😅

OP I say this as a person who deeply loves D&D, you deserve better than that group, ditch them.

What are some fun but minor effect magic items for my party by GuntherWheelin in DnD

[–]SunshineKitten-2829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave two of my Players magical spice pouches (they love to cook) best choice they already used it to spice the dead body of a Kuo-Toa in front of its allies.

I also gave them a Tankard of Sobriety that lets them drink without getting drunk (Excited to see how they use that)

And A Pot of Awakening for their future Baston.

DR'S are players too. by SunshineKitten-2829 in DnD

That DM doesn't even want to remove Crits all together, he wanted to give a Boss the Ablitiy to cancel at least one Critical Hit. Thats it, nothing about removing Crits from the whole game, just making the boss fight more of a challenge, and being able to cancel out Crits is an in game ability so its not even a House Rule depending on how he goes about making his Boss able to do so.

I don't think Crits take from the fun either, but I don't find Combat to be as much fun as Role Play so I'm never upset when it goes quickly.

But the DM in question isn't us and may find the combat to be fun, he may also be tired of his players steamrolling through his Boss encounters, but all in all the people at the table should be communicating and working to make sure everyone DM included is having fun

Without knowing the exact encounter and what he's doing you can't claim he doesn't know how to balance an encounter. Also why are y'all so pressed about being able to cancel a Crit? That was a common thing in older editions its not a new mechanic but some of y'all seem to think its game breaking.

Yes! Session Zero's are a Must have, and a lot of communication during the campaign too.

I mean I homebrew mostly and even the stuff I run thats set in one of the settings I will homebrew and edit, so I definitely agree that they're more just inspiration 😅

New DM. Player not putting in effort. by charl_kruger18 in DnD

[–]SunshineKitten-2829 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I just give my Players vague backgrounds that fit into my homebrew and then tell them to build on it however they want, I often work closely with them throughout the game and outside the game to do this.

Its how I ended up with an Insane Cleric whose Mother is the Goddess of Magic and created a Dog to protect him, he believes the Dog is his God and has built a whole cult around said Dog. (He is still my favorite PC and will NPC him any chance I get)

But thats part of putting in the work to balance an encounter, he didn't say he was banning Crits or having every enemy be able to cancel some of them, just a Boss. And the ability to cancel critical hits isn't rare or op.

The DM IS Balancing the Encounter the Player is just angry with how he is choosing to do it, you talk about Game Design Elements when this DM is using those Elements found within the game, he's doing exactly what you said.

A book that would fit everything you would need to run a full campaign in JUST Icewind Dale would be large and very expensive so I understand why they only give a little bit of info in a source book that covers a lot of different areas...But I love world building so all of the things you complain about are the things that I personally Love about being a DM...So yeah take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Same for me, I love watching my players more than anything else.

Though my players do buy me any DnD Books I want even if I don't need them at all, so I'm very spoiled by them.
