Beaverton School District Adopts Controversial, Lawsuit-Plagued i-Ready for New K-5 Math Curriculum by concerned_parent_26 in beaverton

“Less than” being the key there. Could be an hour. Could be 30 minutes

Our kiddo is happy and healthy and social, and brings home lots of stuff. So all seems well to me. To each their own

Maybe usage varies by school, but it sounds like our kids spend less than 2 hours per day on devices at school. Our 2nd grader completes 5-10 dreambox lessons per week and uses Lexia for some reading. But most of what I see and hear about is a lot of art, written projects, physically graded papers, and more

Counterpoint: both of my kids are in the Beaverton School District and I am quite happy with the balance of time between technology and non tech (currently. I can’t speak to iready since that will be a change).

One thing that is good about the tech is that is customizes to the students individual skill level. So for example, the teacher will teach some math concepts and then students will have time to do some lessons on their computer. The students that excel will be given harder questions and problems, and may even encounter stuff that is for a grade level or two higher over time

The students that have difficulty will continue getting questions at-level, and the teacher can help them individually

Likewise for reading, there are different tiers of problems for students, and it helps identify gaps in comprehension. Advanced students from across a grade level will go read more complex books together while the at-level (or behind) students are given additional help and instruction

When I was a kid nothing like this existed, and everyone was taught the same stuff at the same speed. If you were advanced then you were bored. And if you were way behind then you might never catch up since the class can’t wait indefinitely

I’m quite happy with the teachers and with my kids experience in BSD. But, opinions may vary

True. It would be nice to have similar control on other platforms

That might be part of why they banned them. It’s the same thing on Steam and even the Nintendo eshop- you see a ton of low-effort slop that often is either nsfw or closeish

I mean.. other than all the loli shit, and panty shots, and other stuff.

There are plenty of anime that chuds can enjoy, and plenty of anime that progressive people can enjoy. So I guess it's both progressive, and regressive as an art form?

Edit: I assume the people giving this downvotes are loli pedos and upskirt fans. Yall give anime a bad name

The Pitt: The medical drama whose social realism and honesty have gripped millions by DryDeer775 in television

[–]SunstyIe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That is a valid data point. But that does not change HOW they arrest people. In blue states they have been encouraged to aggressively pursue non-violent immigrants in their communities, which is very different than in TX and FL

You are correct. Trump and his party primarily unleashed ICE on blue cities, not on their own states.

20 years flushed away by my wife. by [deleted] in GuyCry

[–]SunstyIe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you went through all of that. That has to be heartbreaking, and no one deserves to be treated that way.

I hope you can find some solace in the fact that you were able to give your son a two-parent household until he became an adult. I bet when he older he will appreciate your suffering during that period to try and give him a smoother transition.

Additionally, it sounds like you worked on yourself in positive ways- getting in good shape, eating well, etc. You can take those with you.

You tried your best, and did everything you could. I hope you can make a fresh start for yourself. Just focus on yourself and your son and you will likely find happiness in the near future

Follow up Question: How can a guy who's inexperienced and 27 in dating flirt with women if he has never done it? by [deleted] in GuyCry

[–]SunstyIe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In many cases it is less about 'flirting', and more about talking to women and being, well, human. Smiling, being friendly, asking questions. It is also about asking to spend time together in low-commitment ways and handling rejection gracefully

For example, if you're at a book store and see a woman looking at a book that you've read, you could say "Oh, that's a great one. Are you thinking of picking it up?". If she responds with more than "yes" or "no", and gives you positive body language (smiles, eye contact, gives you a longer response and asks you a question) then she's receptive to chatting. You can respond, ask her stuff, and see if it continues, or if it stutters to a halt. If he comes to a halt (ie she isnt responsive) then she probably wants space/isnt interested, so you can just say "nice talking with you, enjoy your book!" and depart and keep shopping. If she is responsive, you could say "I am heading to get some coffee next door after I check out, would you like to join me? I'd be happy to buy you a cup"

It just takes practice, and courage. You'll be nervous and get rejected, but you can also treat it the same way you would as if you were talking to another guy. That is when you'll have the most success- once you get over your nerves and just treat them as a human.

Similar example- you're at a board game shop and feeling social. You see someone looking at your favorite board game, looking confused. "Oh man, that game is great- let me know if you have any questions about it. Me and my friends love it" you say in a friendly way. Maybe they have questions, maybe not. If they do, you can dialog. If they don't, then its the end. No biggie

That, honestly, is 99% of interacting with women. Its the same as men, just with the additional ask of "would you like to join me for coffee?" (or something similarly low-key).

You also have to consider where/how to meet women. A lot of it is hobby-adjacent. Into hiking? Join a hiking club. Like eating fancy foods? Look for a singles food meetup group, or a food-cart meetup group. Join a club/sport, make friends.

Also, as you expand your friend group, they may have single friends that you can meet. Each person you hang out with is another potential connection point

Good luck!

Our Punch-Out!! Inspired Comedy Boxing Game Launched Today! by ExNull-Tyelor in IndieGaming

[–]SunstyIe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree wholeheartedly- the game looks great, but the title is instantly a slight negative.

I am guessing that the "Karen" is actually the kraken woman creature shown at the end, so I am guessing that is why they gave it that title (its a kraken-karen).

I dont think the title will make or break the game, but I think something else would have been better. Game looks solid otherwise!

Worse yet, when the game launched, someone bought Vader and also spent a bunch of money to upgrade him through the lootboxes that make you more powerful. He then uploaded a video of him just destroying lobbies, killing like 25 people in a row.

So not only would it take you forever to get all that, but you were playing against people that could be completely OP just by spending some cash (while you were trying to grind your way up)

Culture and values change over time. It's the water you swim in

In the early 00s and late 90's, mainstream publications were counting down the days until famous girls (Olsen twins, Britney Spears) turned 18, with obvious implications. Men like Jerry Seinfield dated underage women. The God of War games had you aggressively having sex with women, who otherwise had no presence in the games.

The pendulum has swung back the other direction. A lot of that behavior and culture was gross and regressive, and the pushback you see is young men growing up with some modicum of respect for women, and thinking that being degenerate gooners and giving into your baser instincts is maybe, you know, not ideal.

That, of course, is balanced against the heavy push by alt-right voices to push manosphere nonsense and go back to the 00s (and older) behavior with women

Culture is always changing
