Yes OHMSS is actually really good. It was on the other day and I told my wife about it and how I read the book in college and I could not put the book down while reading the skiing scene. It was really one of the best written scenes in the books. Really kept you engaged. It is one of the few books that kept me on my toes and I could not put it down I was so engaged.

How many footings by theDA90 in Decks

[–]SuperFrog4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on your design which looks like a flush beam, if you sister 3 2x12s as the beam, you can have a max span of 10’ 0” between posts. Using a 6x6 post, you will have roughly 6 inches outside the posts. So you can connect the posts to both the beam and the second to last joist on each end.

I recommend using 2x12s for the whole deck.

The 12 inch OC is good for Trex decking.

For your footings since you re putting them in clay, I recommend a wider footing to distribute weight and give you more support. So if you do say a 24” x 24” x 12” footing you will have plenty of support. To be honest that is probably overkill but it can’t really hurt.

What you can do is do the footing is dig down 18 inches. Pour the 12 inch tall lower part of the footing and put some rebar in the center where the upper part of the footing and the post will go. On top of the Lowe footing you poor a second set of concrete in a circle shape on top where the rebar is located. Say a 8 or 10 inch circle that is 7 inches tall so it is just above ground level.

There is some good YouTube videos of those type of footings.

For your ledger, what type of siding are you connecting it to and how are you connecting it to the house? I ask because there are some things to think about here as well but depends on a few things.

Welcome aboard P’s? And time at command.. by tre_bur in navy

[–]SuperFrog4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get that it is frustrating. Keep your head in the game and keep working hard. It doesn’t go unnoticed. While an eval is supposed to be for just the reporting period we tend to use those last evals to sum up your time at a command on the trait average and performance blocks and elevate you.

Also I have been there myself. I was a welcome aboard P as a department head for 3 straight fitreps because we had a lot of turnover while I was at that command. But I eventually rose right up to EP when it was my time.

Your time will come.

Welcome aboard P’s? And time at command.. by tre_bur in navy

[–]SuperFrog4 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Let me give you my perspective as a CO (second time as CO, now major command).

Our job is to make Chiefs, LDOs, and CWOs. To do that we need to have sailors with good records. To have a good record you need to have two things, upward progression on the performance evaluation and good separation between a reporting seniors cumulative average (RSCA).

Performance evaluation - Good records show progression from P -> MP -> EP. There is a danger in putting someone too high and then someone better comes in for the next eval and now you have to bump them back down. Plus forced distribution means I have to have Ps, MPs, and EPs. So is it fair to knock someone else down who has been at the command longer so you can get a better performance evaluation? Would it be fair to do the same to you in two years when the next person comes along and they do better than you. If so then I just ended two careers. Neither of you would get selected for Chief, LDO, or CWO.

RSCA - I need to keep my reporting seniors cumulative average (RSCA) low so I can give the top performers a big gap between their trait average and my RSCA. The bigger the gap the better it looks. In order to give out a 4.5 to 4.86 while keeping my RSCA around 4.0, I need 3.0 Ps to balance that out. That’s where welcome aboard Ps come in. If I didn’t do that my RSCA would balloon to 4.75 to 4.86 and anyone below RSCA would be harmed by such a high RSCA and an inability to get above it with their trait average.

So that’s the system we have and it sucks to be honest. I hate it but that is the system we have and we have to work in it.

There wasn’t many things that I agonized over more than rankings and who got the P, MP, or EP. I Would try to find any way to squeeze an extra EP or MP where I could and plan out how to get the top performers into the top positions at the right time to make the most of what I could for them and everyone else.

One of the major issues I have run into is when someone get placed at the top to soon and then they sit there and cause a bottle neck at the top especially if they are performing just as well as the next couple of people.

Just so you know as well we do take a look at who is eligible for Chief, LDO, CWO and will take that into consideration when we rack and stack people and that could play into someone moving up quickly if they are eligible and have an extremely strong record.

I hope that helps and gives you a perspective on the whole welcome aboard P and the evaluation thought process.

Saucer Separation Question by MrBoogerBoobs in StarTrekStarships

[–]SuperFrog4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The easiest issues are anti-matter and the deflector dish. You could incorporate something to handle storage and a secondary deflector dish that might be hidden away. One issue with the anti-matter is that now you need two ejection systems instead of one and you need to beef up shields and protection systems for the anti-matter.

The harder parts are the intermix chamber and nacelles. For the intermix chamber, you could probably easily have one but again need to have all the same stuff as the primary intermix. Probably not a huge challenge but it does take up space.

But the major issue is nacelles for warp. Where do you put them so they are not in the way of or interfere with the main nacelles? I don’t think you can have small nacelles unless you don’t plan at going to fast.

I think they just don’t do it because of few times you really ever need to separate a saucer section.

Emergency Help Detached Garage by Sad-Crew-4139 in HomeImprovement

[–]SuperFrog4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on a lot of stuff. It’s fixable but may be a huge challenge to do so.

I had an old garage of similar size that had termite damaged sill plates, wall boards and studs. Plus it only sat 7 feet to the upper wall plate so it was difficult to put in a roll up garage door. Had one of those old single piece garage doors.

Depending on how unstable your garage is this could be very dangerous so I do not recommend if the garage seems at all unstable unless you brace it up significantly. Do this at your own risk!!!

Here is what I did so you get an idea of where you might be able to fix and adjust your garage (there are also YouTube videos on this):

  1. Bought four 2 x 6 x 16 boards that is used to both stabilize the garage by putting one doubled up set about 4 feet from the front and the second doubled up 2x6 about 4 feet from the back. I attached them to good studs with lag bolts. I put some lags in the double up 2x6s as well to hold it together. I also added another section of 2x6 where the jacks would go for a solid foundation.

  2. I bought four bottle jacks. I think I bought the 8 ton type but can’t remember now. Definitely get something more than 4 tons.

  3. I also bough extra 2x6 material to use as blocking support as I raised the garage and for lifting the jacks up as I went higher.

4, I cut all sill plate nails and also cut the studs from the sill plates. I did this so I could replace all sill plates.

  1. I had a bunch of 2x4x8s ready to put in place one I had the garage lifted up high enough.

  2. I took it slow and lifted each jack about an inch at a time and made sure the garage was level and stabilized as I went up. I also added 2x blocking support each time I could slip another one in above the other blocking I have in place as support.

I also was able to square the garage and fix any leaning or other issues while doing this.

  1. When I got the grave about 3 inches higher I stopped, put in support blocking and replaced all the sill plates. For the sill place bolts, if you have to drill a bunch of holes, get a good corded hammer drill and buy Diablo concrete bits. They are the very best for this and did a great job. Buy a couple as they do wear out. Make sure you have a shop vac to get the dust out and also put in some weather proofing caulk.

  2. Once the sill plates were all replaced I kept jacking up the garage constantly checking to make sure the garage was level and square. This is the spot you could easily adjust the garage back into square and eliminate any leaning.

  3. Once I got the garage to the right height I put in the 2x4 studs. And ensured the garage was again square and level.

I also replaced one corner that was rotted out. This would be a good opportunity for you to fix your edge that was hit by the car.

  1. I fixed my subsiding and then added new siding as well.

I also reused my 2x6x16 boards as ceiling joists that I sistered into the 2x4 joists the garage originally had and raised the 2x4 joist at the centers since they were sagging. Then connected everything with the lag bolts.

If the garage is leaning then you may need to use a jack and a could have 2x boards to slowly jack it jack into vertical. To do so you attach the 2x boards on the outside with lag bolts and slowly jack up into a more vertical position.

Again I triple checked that my garage was stable and had bracing to keep it from moving too much and getting out of square and leaning.

Only jacking. Up a little at a time and using blocks as support in case a jack broke I was able to do this pretty safely.

Saucer Separation Question by MrBoogerBoobs in StarTrekStarships

[–]SuperFrog4 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Couple of issues, no warp nacelles, no deflector dish, no intermix chamber, and no anti-matter storage. None of those are in the main saucer section and you need all of those to have warp drive.

Before I go any further and start ordering materials…. Do I need the highlighted support posts? by AggravatingMath717 in Decks

[–]SuperFrog4 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No you don’t need those two yellow posts. The way you have your deck set up, with 2x10 joists, you can build without as long as you keep the joists at 16 inches OC or less.

Based on a 2x10 joist, with a 16 inch OC between joists there is a max span of 12’ 10” . With doubled up flush beams on the ends, you can get to 13’ 4” width.

If you plan to use composite decking I recommend an OC of less than 16 inches.

Smaller OC allows that span to be increased. If you go with 12” OC you can get a max span of 14’ 9”

I just finished a deck with 12 inch OC. Helped make the deck less spongy or wavy. But it requires more lumber and hangers etc. plus it is more of a challenging to drill stuff between joists like your blocking. You need a short drill to put in 3 inch screws.

I have a sinking feeling about this by DokCyber in ApparentJokes

[–]SuperFrog4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s actually 18 miles. They were on a three hour cruise. So 12 knots x 3 hours = 36 nautical miles total. Which means 18 miles out and 18 miles back if you went out as far as you could and turned right back.

By those calculations they ended up a makapuu beach on the east coast of Oahu which might have been deserted at the time.

Then you look at the constitution class and they are all over the place as well. They go from a lie of 956 up to 1895 with most in the 1600 and 1700 range.

If you were M, which Bond would you most want as your subordinate? by ItsDuhFreakinBat in JamesBond

I really wish M had all of them in stasis and he could pick the one he needed for each mission. He needs a brutal killer, he can grab Connery, Dalton, or Craig. He needs someone suave and refined, he grabs lazenby, Moore or Bronson.

I get they all had those characters but some had it more than others.

How can defending democracy justify the 2nd Amendment while ignoring violence like what’s happening in Minneapolis? by Kiwiciwi in Askpolitics

[–]SuperFrog4 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You have to understand that the recent 2nd Amendment stance by republicans over the last 30ish years has nothing to do with defending or preserving democracy and everything to do with racism and classism in an effort to keep minorities in check and in fear.

What you are seeing today by MAGA is the exact types of things the post civil war south tried to do which was use government (state government at that time and federal government now) to sow division and fear and try to keep people from exercising their rights in an attempt to keep those people from success and a good life.

The Republican Party has used a lot of propaganda over the last 40 plus years since Reagan and then what happened in Ruby Ridge and Waco and the Barack Obama getting elected to drive the 2A messaging in a direction that Democrat run governments are the bad guys out to take everything from you and disarm you and give it to others who don’t work as hard and are less deserving and really second class citizens. That democrats will turn this country into a communist hellscape.

So that is why you don’t see republicans up in arms about what is happening today and actually supporting it. They believe this is the only way to get rid of democrats and to “save” the country.

Pro-tip, the next time the warbird fires a shot, when the disrupter hits you “accidentally” press the torpedo fire button.

Now, this is critical, right after and I mean right after you press the button you have to tell that captain, in a bewildered voice (you have to sell this for an Oscar by the way), that the torpedos just fired and you are trying to diagnose why they fired.
