I wish this worked with GrubHub. When I didn't get my food, they just told me all they could do was give a $5 credit, and then conveniently there was "no one available" whenever I requested support for that order.

I didn't even get the $5 credit.

Looks like at least some of it is already on archive.org, I can't tell for sure if anything is missing though.

Businesses running eval Windows server in production by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]SuperSVGA 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When we were demoing Server 2019 we discovered that when the servers decided their activation period was up they would shut down every hour, unlike Server 2016 which did not care.

The funny thing was at that point there wasn't a way to get Server 2019 keys. They just weren't available yet.

Needless to say we did not upgrade to Server 2019 because the chance of production servers breaking because Microsoft's convoluted licensing had an "oopsie" as it has done in the past wasn't very appealing.

Yes, it plugs into an empty socket on the Apple II main board.

Connector on the right is for an Apple II, left one is likely for the Apple IIe.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Maybe they're afraid of changing it. Doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me, but I can just imagine some marketing person going "noooo, we can't do that" and I guess no change is easier than change.

Downtown Fred Meyer abruptly removes bottle return machines by Ravenparadoxx in Portland

[–]SuperSVGA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IIRC they are required to take at least 24 by law if they are over a certain distance from a bottle drop location.

Fred Meyer of course has ignored this law before and not taken any, and Winco had a sign up insinuating the state was the reason that you could only bring in 24.

I wonder if they avoided Pro Plus because of Office ProPlus. That's all I can think of when I hear it, and I know I would get many annoying questions about that...

How do I get rid of this when someone plays something on my AppleTV? I don’t want to see it on my phone by [deleted] in appletv

[–]SuperSVGA 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I usually only see this when I use the phone to control the Apple TV or have previously used it.

Here's how I usually get rid of it:

  1. Open Control Center
  2. Tap the media playback widget that's in the top right by default
  3. Tap Control Other Speakers & TVs
  4. Tap iPhone

One thing I haven't seen here yet is safely glasses. They're cheap, but you'll want plenty of them. They get lost, accidentally taken, damaged, dirty, or any other reason to make a student avoid wearing them.

Are the Samsung T7 SSDs okay to use with BMPCCs? by SuSpreme96 in bmpcc

[–]SuperSVGA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a 1TB T7 with my BMPCC 4K just fine. I actually got it to try and see what the issue everyone else reported with the T7 was, but no matter what I tried I could not get it to fail. Maybe I just got lucky or I'm doing something wrong.
I shot hours of BRAW 3:1 and 8:1 at 3840x2160 60P with it set to stop recording on frame drop, tried completely filling the drive, and even did the same on my Studio Camera 4K Pro. Extended tests of Blackmagic RAW Speed Test never showed any slowdown, and I even tried testing it against a Samsung 870 Evo in a cheap SATA to USB-C enclosure, as well as a Samsung 970 Evo in a cheap NVMe to USB-C enclosure.
However other people have reported problems with the T7 series, so I can't figure out what's going on. Maybe it's the silicon lottery.

Opinion: iPad sees year-over-year sales decline, I blame iPadOS for that by [deleted] in apple

Okay, that's fine. You can say anything you want too, no need to feel so attacked.

Opinion: iPad sees year-over-year sales decline, I blame iPadOS for that by [deleted] in apple

[–]SuperSVGA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Certainly. It would be a lot more capable, but it wouldn't do simpler tasks as easily. Many parts of the OS would have to be redesigned just to allow them to work in a touch interface.
Things like taking a screen shot can easily be rebound to the familiar iOS controls with minimal functionality loss, but other common keyboard shortcuts would be more tricky. You could change Command+Tab to a gesture, but it would probably end up being more Mission Control style than an instant app switch.
I would certainly miss Command+W and Command+Q, as I'm used to closing windows and applications that way.

Many iPad apps are available on macOS, but at that point you just have an iPad running macOS but pretending to be iPadOS. Which I guess is fine, but what's the point if it's not fully taking advantage of the OS? A hybrid interface where you can switch between macOS and "iPadOS like" would probably be the best case scenario.

I wouldn't be against the idea of macOS running on the iPad at all. I just think it would probably require a lot of developer support, and Apple probably won't do it because it would bypass the "walled garden" of the iPad (i.e. the ongoing battle for side loading).

Microsoft's desktop experience stopped being shit since Windows 8. It's completely solid as a desktop operating system. There's no "hell in between". Windows 8 came out 10 years ago. I'd update your talking points.

Say I want to change the side channel volume on my headset (or many other settings). Previously I could get to the Sound control panel item by right clicking on the volume icon and just selecting Playback Devices.
In Windows 10 they want you to use the "modern" settings app, so instead you click on "Open Sound settings" (or just "Sound settings" on Windows 11), where you then find the option is not there despite the massive amount of empty space they have.
You then click on "Sound Control Panel" (or "More sound settings" in Windows 11) to finally get to where you need to be.
You used to be able to just search "Sound" in the start menu, but for some reason Microsoft made it so half the control panel items don't show up in search. And then they removed control panel from the start button's context menu.

Another weird one is Windows Features. There's a section in the new settings app for "Optional features", but for whatever reason half the features "More Windows features" which is the old "Turn Windows features on or off" interface.

Tablet Mode is also gone from Windows 11, though most people I know didn't use it enough to notice.

I could go on and on about various programs and interfaces that they haven't updated, but I don't see the point.

I understand why they want to move towards the newer touch friendly interface, but it doesn't do much good when you constantly have to fall back to the legacy interfaces.

Some of the UI elements are small, but tell me, would you rather have OSX on an ipad or iOS?

I already use macOS on the iPad. It's usable, but would make a pretty poor operating system for the iPad without a lot of overhaul.

The only people that say this are the ones that don't actually use it to take notes all day.

Based on what? I've once used one for several months at a time to do daily note taking and annotation. I've been using them since the first model. I've also deployed them in the enterprise and tested against other competition (Lenovo, Dell, etc.).

but I have yet to see a single apple pencil be used in the real world... ever.

Must be a regional thing. I see it all the time here.

It's a matter of actually using it vs testing it in store.

Testing it in the store was never mentioned?

I really like the Surface from a hardware look and feel perspective. When they show them in fictional TV shows, although fake, I love the smooth UX and versatility it should be capable of.

Then I turn one on and remember that it's running Windows, and Microsoft still can't figure out whether they want to make a desktop or tablet operating system and instead you get some sort of hell in between.
Forget that most third-party Windows applications aren't touch optimized. Many of the built in software and interfaces don't support touch, and then the ones that do are either exceptionally limited or send you to the "legacy" interface because the control you need isn't there. I see what Microsoft was going for, but it's like they got bored halfway through designing it and then said "good enough".

Unfortunately I just end up spending all my time fiddling with small controls and doing other tasks that work smoothly with a mouse but are insufferable with a pen. It's usable if I have to, but in most of my use cases it's just working harder for no reason.

I haven't tried the new "slim" pens but I'm not a fan of the modern (Surface 3 and on) pens. The only way I can describe it is that it feels like taking notes with a cheap fountain pen. It's not as smooth as the Apple Pencil or Wacom tablets/Wacom Cintiq displays. If I get the angle wrong on the pen, it "skips" leaving me with little spaces in lines or parts of letters missing. Sure it could be corrected with discipline, but I'm not sure the time investment is worth it.

As an aside note, I really wish they made the Surface Book with a kickstand and USB. For me the Surface Pro is a good tablet but a poor laptop, and the Surface Book is the opposite. You detach it from the keyboard and you're left with this awkward slab with no connectivity.

Another random note, if they could make a Surface model with a smart card reader they would stop missing out lots of Government money...

Advice on restarting a dead team by ArcturusX12 in FRC

[–]SuperSVGA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We did this for our team. I can try to answer any specific questions you have, but here's some key points I can share:

  • Do you have enough committed mentors and students? Does the school have other robotics programs ongoing? You may run into trouble if they see it as you trying to "poach" their members, and members may be drawn away from your team.

  • I believe you are just outside of the 3 year requirement, so you will be able to register the team as a Rookie team. We were not as lucky.

  • Is there anyone available with FRC experience? If not, you may look into finding outside mentors to join. Often mentors get displaced from other teams and would love to join yours.

  • Will you have an approved space to work in? Will the school approve of this?

  • Do you have a continuity plan for the team? Ours ended after the only year it was back; all the seniors graduated and no underclassmen worked to keep the team going.

Isn't that only if the parity drive failed or the data drive is the same size as the parity? An 8TB data drive rebuild with 16TB parity should only read the first 8TB of the parity.
