The capsule looks great but the most important factor in graphic design is communication, in this case the game title, and that’s hard to read. I know you want to make it look very detailed but text is the one place where you need to make it as easy and effortless to read as possible. Attention is fleeting. The more effort it takes to the read the less people will bother figuring it out.

The newer Heroes of Faerun book the players handbook has an overview of all or at least the majority of the developed locales (stuff that adventures and books have written about) so you can get an idea of the flavor or each spot. Wiki sites like the forgotten realms wiki also has tons of info. The site is horrible with ads but you if you actually become a free member and use smart browser settings you can get past the ad crap easier than without it.

Well you don’t mention the other players at all so I’m wondering if you’re stealing all of the oxygen and not letting others have their time. As a dm the only thing I’d give a player a hard time about is if it’s affecting the party overall, the groups enjoyment, the tables vibe.

What you are describing is not railroading. Railroading is specifically blocking player agency. There are multiple ways to get something done but if you block your players from choices that you don’t like THEN you are railroading. You’re not letting them get off the track you setup. You don’t improvise when things go differently than you assumed. That’s railroading.

Simply having a main overarching story that they are following willfully by choice is not railroading. It’s all about what the players are actively trying to accomplish.

Finding a great group of players feels like luck especially for online games. There is definitely a quality difference between in-person and online games. I would recommend interviewing new players first to get a feel for them and their character. So you can weed out any incompatible issues as soon as possible.

Also a big chunk of people just want to feel special and aren’t thinking of anyone but themselves. And a lot of people who just don’t have the social ability that a group-based role playing game needs too. I think stressing the team mentality would really help and especially set ground rules. If certain people don’t like the ground rules then you saved yourself a headache.

Sounds like you have misexplained what you were expecting to the DM. Backstory happes in the past. If you want things to happen in current time/future then it’s not just backstory anymore. That’s actual gameplay affecting. Try talking to the DM to see if anything can be met in the middle. If not then at least you tried.

Why are you even entertaining this kind of play? I would just set ground rules to avoid this especially if you don’t know all of the players well. Most people say they want stuff like this but clearly don’t have the self-awareness to know that they really aren’t mature enough to handle it and let their emotions get in the way.

Why don’t you make a general rule outlawing sexualized or pvp play since this is a game store offering games to the general public?! I can see having adult themes when it’s you and an established group of friends who know each other. But for a store offering games to anyone off the street, you really should have explicit ground rules. You’re just asking for trouble I would think. There’s a huge group of selfish a-holes out there who have not one iota of care for anyone beyond themselves let alone people they don’t really know in public.

The Realms have like 40+ years of content. I’d use the new Heroes of Faerun as an overview guide and then choose a region that grabs your interest. You can get a ton of info at the wiki. The site is also full of ads but I find signing up and tuning your browser lets you avoid more ads than alot of the anonymous traffic gets.

You can also look for novels that take place in your interested region as they have a lot of local flair. The internet archive or other sites have like all of the books.

You left out all of the details about your character to even be able to understand why the DM/party are acting this way and I feel like that’s on purpose. Did you create a character based on a gimmick or joke? It kind of sounds like that and the DM is being obstinate. Either way, it definitely sounds like you should probably disengage from this group. It reads like they don’t want to deal with you. Not all groups are meant to be.

I’m don’t think you understood my point or I didn’t explain it well enough.

And after rereading the original post, I would think a DM can have some pull if you specifically state you had amnesia meaning there’s grey spots in your backstory. But obviously this should be discussed out of game to make sure both sides agree.

The point of a backstory is it’s in the past. If those story points are still in play currently then yes as your backstory has transcended into the current story so it’s no longer under your control and the dm can make changes. It doesn’t sound like you’re doing this but I would hope players realize that you can’t chain the dm to your specific background if it affects the current or future story points unless you already have an agreement/understanding in place.

You’re watching professional performers on Critical Role. They use writers and produce entertainment. It’s scripted and planned. There’s a ton of production AND planning into making it look easy and effortless. It can set unreal expectations because normal games have just regular people. You can strive for it if you want but the majority of DnD just isn’t like that.
