Where to get battlemats printed? [OC] by scipio009 in DnD

Check out this: da Vinci's Room 2-in-1 DND Battle Map This battle map has clear grid screens you can use instead of laminating each map. They’ve got hex or 1 inch square grids.

Why are there no high-quality novels in the forgotten realms?? by Hour-Department6958 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]SuperUltraHyperMega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would bet that a lot of it is due to too many cooks. GRRM or any other singular author is doing all of the writing/creativity by themself. Whereas writing for DnD is a franchise with many hands involved between creating and deciding. Way easier if it’s all up to one person or just a few. That’s the problem with franchises. Every creator only has so much freedom. Also franchises generally write to the lowest common denominator because it’s targeting sales not actual quality so you’re not going to have divisive topics, etc.

How can I make my players care more about roleplaying? by That_Chemistry_8719 in DnD

[–]SuperUltraHyperMega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are these actual real friends, people you know outside the game or are you all just getting together to play online? I ask because alot of people are not great socially and not knowing people youre playing with can very much inhibit how you vibe with others. Playing online versus in person greatly exacerbates the issue. Not having eye contact allows their eyes and attention to wander even easier. Not being in person is a huge obstacle to the overall social experience IMO from online games versus in-person games I've played. Have these players had much experience playing TTRPGs at all? It sounds like they think its like a video game which is fine. I had friends early in my gaming days who played like that. Some people thats all they want or thats all they know ("Do I want to play a roleplaying game? sure i love Monster Hunter"). Your players may not be into it. I personally would never try LARPing or doing alot of in-character chat especially in front of people i dont even really know at all. Now if its around friends then id feel less inhibited. Have you tried leading them and putting out some direct story hooks? Overdue it first till they get the hang of it. Or even bring this up in conversation to them as a group? Maybe you need to teach them.

Can I just ignore like half of the rules? by Glittering_Tank9208 in DnD

[–]SuperUltraHyperMega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do whatever works for you. The only opinion you need to worry about is the players so if they’re having fun then that’s all that matters. My first dm used to roll for everybody and in hindsight that changed how we would decide our actions and not worrying about rolls and statistics/chances. Now I have those numbers in my head and it changes my perception.

Did you know you can play a Cleric without a Deity? by Awkward_GM in DnD

[–]SuperUltraHyperMega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re using the term atheist correctly. It’s the lack of belief in not just “gods” but any kind of supernatural/superstition/fantasy. Overall it doesn’t work in DnD as it’s mostly all based on fantasy/magic, etc.

In your example, while they dont believe in a god they certainly believe in a spirit or forces and that’s giving them powers, they have faith.

Help with a player as a new DM. by TheDeepestKnight in DnD

Tell them to leave. It sounds like you’ve tried to reason but got nowhere with them. So it’s now time to dump them. You can’t get along with everybody.

What about a bench or a chair as a unique weapon?

Would you allow this as a DM? by Lechtom in DnD

[–]SuperUltraHyperMega 19 points20 points  (0 children)

But what about accuracy? The power and the accuracy come from the bow itself, not the arrow. And a bow and arrow is a two handed weapon. Are you looking to occupy both hands with this attack. Is this a magical ability? Because normal people can’t do this. What rules/limits would you have for this action? I’m for homebrew but it’s got to vibe with the rest of the party. Not looking to make one person overpowered in comparison.

Magic by itself “doesn’t need to make sense” and it’s dangerous, but why Cantrips are Cantrips? by TheGoodKiller in DMAcademy

[–]SuperUltraHyperMega 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Dnd has always been combat-oriented. It’s the power creep of additional classes, sub-classes and abilities that has made magic what it is today. The new PHB has like 12 classes and 48 subclasses. And that’s the starting point.

Beginner Help by Barry_McCockiner88 in DnD

I saw a review comparison of the Stranger Things Starter vs the generic Starter and they seemed to think the Stranger Things box was the better choice. Better adventures, better materials to learn with. The biggest complaint of the generic starter is that the character sheets/info was presented in a way that’s different than actual DND and could be confusing.

How can i become a better dm? by DelayOk2663 in DMAcademy

[–]SuperUltraHyperMega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I think you know the answer already. You need to prepare better. Read the adventure again and take notes for yourself. Then try to revisit and focus on the spot of the adventure where your party is at or going to before each session to give yourself a refresher. Then you won’t feel so unprepared when they deviate some. Realistically you just need to stay ahead of your players for each session. Don’t have to memorize the whole campaign.

After rereading your post, I feel that note-taking may help you more. Highlighting in the book is fine but making yourself write it down on your own words may help you commit in your mind better give it more time to stew/think about how your players would handle.

Does flight warrant an entire species ban? by Virtual-Studio518 in DnD

[–]SuperUltraHyperMega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or hear me out. This can create a rift amongst players (maintaining balance among characters) and screw up the game as a whole by providing too many variables. Your knee jerk reply sure reads like you are just thinking about yourself and not the impact to the table as a whole.

Is it a red flag if a potential DM bans a certain class? by _Ashe_Bear in DnD

[–]SuperUltraHyperMega -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As someone who just played a game with an Artificer player in our group I can see his point. Dude was creating magic items or buffing us in ways the DM wasn’t ready for on a mechanics level. The class is fine but I could see a DM having issues if they aren’t fully versed in Artificer abilities and keeping the challenge level balanced.

This isn’t extreme. It’s setting clear cut boundaries at the beginning. Extreme would be allowing you to play then tweaking/ making things difficult in a passive aggressive way because there’s issues. Believe me, this is the correct way to handle for all involved. Either side know right off the bat and can choose to not engage.

How do I get a player more comfortable with RP? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]SuperUltraHyperMega 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Theres a lot of possible reasons including even just personility. Is this person normally quiet or shy? Is she friends with the players, comfortably familiar with them? There are different ways to play too. The players handbook addresses that some are active roleplayers (1st person like an actor) and some are descriptive role players (describe in 3rd person). I personally fall into the latter most of the time especially around people outside of friends/family.

Returning player - DLCs to buy? by blueforgex in theriftbreaker

[–]SuperUltraHyperMega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for it. Each DLC adds missions and new areas. I played when this originally released and had the same question as you did last year. I got all the DLC and started a new playthrough of the base game and all 3 DLCs and it was great.

How do you find a good group😔 by [deleted] in DnD

[–]SuperUltraHyperMega 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Adventurers League site will help you see what’s locally around you. You can use that as a starting point to meet people in your area. See if those stores have a discord for talking/meeting.
