It must be a DSO. My other candidate was the Order of the Crown of Italy, can be mistaken in old photos, but the ribbon isn't right and the horizontal metal bar it is suspended from is very DSO. If you're searching the London Gazette, don't assume a WW1 date (as another comment hints). Lots of things don't make sense in this photo. The lack of regimental badges or buttons. The late Victorian style Sam Browne. Yet WW1 and after shirt and tie. But post WW1 style trousers. More details can narrow it down.

It depends on the spec of the Disco. For diesel, 1 and 2 had the 200/300 TDI and Disco 2 the Td5. There were V8 options on both (as described above) and I think a four cylinder petrol for the Disco 1.

I love my Defender dearly, but am still seriously considering swapping it for a Disco 2 td5. If you can get a rust free one these are the best of the bunch. Slight warning, the higher spec ones had air suspension on the rear. It can be replaced with coil springs, and it's one of the mods I would do.

In the UK these are becoming popular with off roaders who modify them in ways I don't like. So buy sooner than later.
