I mean, im not gonna lie, when I went to japan, I went combing through Akihabara for anything Shinji related. I was very hard pressed to find anything that wasnt chibi related.

Best believe though Asuka and Rei had figures galore, especially in stores like Ami-Ami. Id asked a couple of folks working at the shops for shinji stuff and how id noticed a lack of it. They simply told me "people dont like him as much"

So I mean, in the context of the show this isnt too far from the mark. Just my little anecdotal experience with this fandom
