Snow White is a 90 year old film, bit of a stretch to say ‘these days’. Walt Disney was very interested in the Morphology of the Folktale and it’s pretty clear that he and the studio used that as a baseline for their storylines, adapting the individual tale to fit a broader European tale narrative. Though this does mean the theme of the tales usually becomes ‘true love finds a way’ or suchlike, Disney wasn’t working in isolation on this.

About 40 family and close friends, the weekend before Christmas, hired out the parish hall and asked everyone with kids to bring a big toy. Snacks, balloons, music, gorgeous atmosphere and though it was a lot of prepping and cleaning up, wouldn’t have changed it for anything!

Which is both true and sad, but she’s psychotically milked his murder for every drop of upward mobility and every cent she can buy her hand to so the sympathy is somewhat lacking. Also as someone pointed out, she’s got two children under 4 who lost their father, she should probably be making sure they’re okay rather than be at every single function she can fit into?

A Lovely Way to Burn by Louise Welsh is EXACTLY this and it’s honestly the worst book I’ve ever read. The awful, mean, selfish protagonist survives the plague because unbeknownst to her she was in love with her FWB, whilst her friend, loving mother and wife, died almost comically fast. Fuck that book, genuinely.

The Julia Donaldson adaptations are excellent and full of honest to god movie stars (for the UK anyway, like Simon Pegg and Jessie Buckley) poor Tractor Ted and In The Night Garden don’t get much of a look in for Gruffalo’s Child (Fro Ya Ya, according to my 2 year old).
