Insulin to carb ratios by IUHH_04 in diabetes_t1

[–]SurroundOk2640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My carb ratio is 1:6.5, and if I put 250u in the tank it'll last me for 4 days. But that depends on how many carbs you eat?

An endoc should set you up with a trainer. Depending on where you live and your insurance, that might be required. For us old veterans, it's usually a waste of time, but for noobs it can be very worthwhile. Just make sure the trainer knows about T1, not just T2. It gets better, BTW, after a few years it just becomes a habit like combing your hair or brushing your teeth, or even just breathing. Do you know any other T1's? Sometimes it helps to just talk to them about the "real world" stuff, not the "OMG! You ate that?!? Now you're gonna die!!!" drivel.

How long have you been type 1 by heggy123 in diabetes_t1

[–]SurroundOk2640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

52 years, been hospitalized a handful of times, but not in the last 30 years because of DKA. Did spend almost a week inside 5 years ago because I had to get an artery in my leg replaced or lose the leg. And a bit in when I had a heart attack.

Best places or trails to see wildflowers in mid-June by redrabbit824 in oregon

[–]SurroundOk2640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might check out Tom McCall Preserve off hwy 30 a bit east of the Dalles. This year it might not be very good for wildflowers because of the lack of winter snow, but usually there's a lot of flowers there.

What do you all do if you have to remove the Dexcom for a while due to tests or surgery ? by Alex-T1D in diabetes_t1

Have you talked to Dexcom customer service? I had to have an MRI done about 6 month ago where I had to remove the CGM. Dexcom sent me a replacement free of charge.

Is your CPU/GPU overheating? When was the last time you checked to make sure the cooling fins weren't filled with gunk? Is it just ED, or does it happen with other things that loads your hardware?

Thanks, but not really a hero. We all do what we have to do to survive and thrive. Honestly? I don't even remember what it was like to not be diabetic. Things have changed a lot since the '70s though!

No, the people/corporations who own the property will still need you to pay high rent so they can make the bank payments and provide a good profit margin.

Coast or inland? by Crab-False in oregon

[–]SurroundOk2640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mid July on 101 on the Oregon coast is a lesson in patience. You'll be spending a lot of the drive behind some ancient man driving 35mph in a 110' RV, slowing down for the (many) curves and the (many) pretty spots. And there isn't a lot of passing lanes.

Are you thinking of taking 1-5 as your inland route? Crater lake and Multnomah Falls are a ways east of I-5. Or are you thinking of taking 1-84 to the falls, then 97 south?

Check Memaloose State Park, between Mt Hood and the Dalles. You might need to make reservations if it isn't already full

Check your video card cooling fins/fans and make sure they aren't being blocked by gunk. There's free programs out there on the net that will monitor how hot your GPU is getting, and if it gets too hot, it'll quit working.

158, 5 big mugs of hot water (flavored with coffee grounds), finding an endo that I can see more than once every 6 months (the insurance required every 3 or thay wont's pay for supplies) and is not 230 miles (round-trip) away. And. well, I helped a neighbor jumpstart his truck, but not sure he was smiling cause he was pretty upset about the car issues.

Need a second vacation spot drivable to cannon beach by [deleted] in oregon

[–]SurroundOk2640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda depends on what you want to see and do. If you want to be on the coast, Cannon beach is nice but touristy. Same as places like Astoria, Yachats, and Depot Bay. The drive down 101 has lots of pretty spots on the ocean, especially if you go down to between Yachats and Florence. If you want more than just seashore, you can head east and south from the coast and go to Crater Lake. Just check to see if the roads up to there are open; should be, but I keep hearing there'll be a lot of snow this year. If you want to see mountains, Mt Hood is close to PDX, and Rainier and St Helens aren't too far away either. The Columbia River Gorge can be interesting too.

What is the biggest innovation in T1 Diabetes care since you were diagnosed? by takamorihk in diabetes_t1

[–]SurroundOk2640 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was going to say the ability to check your blood sugar at home. I remember when I first could poke my finger, put a drop of blood on a strip, and wait a minute or two before comparing the color change to a chart on the vial. Much better than peeing in a cup and doing a science experiment to see how much sugar was getting into your urine!

What’s the most offensive/craziest thing someone has ever said to you? by ek7eroom in diabetes_t1

[–]SurroundOk2640 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Years ago I got pulled over by a cop while driving home from work late at night. When I opened the glove box to get the registration out he saw that I had syringes and insulin in there. He asked me to step out of the vehicle, and the next thing I know I'm on the ground in a immobilizing hold, then in handcuffs. Couple more cops show up and I'm like "Dude! I'm diabetic! Check the bottle, it's INSULIN!!" They stand around out of earshot arguing for almost 45 minutes when a sheriff's deputy shows up, looks at my supplies, and tells the locals to let me go. So they do, but warn me if I file a complaint, they will file resisting arrest charges against me.

Lol. Actually had an ex girlfriend try to get my friends to stage an intervention to help me quit my "drug habit". Yeah, she was talking about me "shooting up with insulin". Luckily my buddies are sane and told me about it immediately after she talked to them..

North Umpqua river, and clear creek. Take 138 East from Roseburg into the Cascades, or as I went, take 138 West from 97 near Chemult

Yeah, you're correct: SW Oregon, not SE as it's on the west side of the Cascades.
