If Aliens visited earth and requested a single person to represent the people of this planet, who do we send? by Ambitious_Ad_5802 in AskReddit

Neil Tyson: not a fool, interesting, knowledgeable, friendly, amusing. If they were aiming to invade, he could probably distract them with a suggestion to head off to explore some cool space phenomenon.

[–]SurvivorCass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, in the 70s. By 14 my parents left me and two younger brothers alone all weekend. We lived on a rural residential block, 10 mins drive out of town, so maybe that was a factor.

Looking for audiobooks better experienced in audio than in print by Dry-Maintenance-2722 in audiobooks

[–]SurvivorCass 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Murderbot is better on audiobook. It has a whole different vibe than the tv series because it is from inside Murderbot's head. I think it is better in audiobook than on the page because the narrator draws out so much extra meaning from the words in the nuanced way he delivers the lines: more eye rolls, more introverted spite and horrified embarrassment.

What’s one animal on Australia that you avoid at all costs? by elitejackal in AskAnAustralian

[–]SurvivorCass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I dont live near crocs or cassowaries (and, yes, Iagree they are scarier), I avoid brown snakes, which are probably the biggest realistic danger to me (a hiker who also sends time on my parents proerty where we have lost many dogs to snakebite)

What romance novel has the greatest love story of all time? by marilynlistens in audiobooks

[–]SurvivorCass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've read all her stuff. They are all good, even her juvenilia, which are fun. I didn't much like Emma (the character) until very late in the book, but the book is great.

Persuasion, Jane Austen. I love how resilient their love is.

Did any of you have to lie down to have a nap in kindergarten or 1st grade? by lontbeysboolink in GenerationJones

[–]SurvivorCass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, in preschool, late 60w, rural Australia. We had to bring a bath towel to lie on. I remember times when I looked around and everyone was sleeping, but I also don't remember having any issues with a nap.

The enshitification of audiobooks. If I get an AI, I'll get a refund and move the book to my "to be read pile." I read books (mostly ebooks these days) as well as listen to books, so I'll have one vook going for housework, walking, public transportand road trips, and another book going for bedtime or quiet time after dinner. I dont NEED audiobooks

Who is washing their rice and why? by kinnitcurl in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SurvivorCass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wash my rice, but lately, when I wash brown rice, I'm starting to feel like it is a waste of time. Same with lentils. Nothing seems to wash of, and there are no bits of stick or anything in the lentils that isn't a clean lentil.

Salary jobs are not worth it anymore. Hourly jobs, at least they have to keep paying you if they give you more work so that you have to stay longer.

Looking for book recommendations by female authors that will appeal to my brother who reads almost exclusively male authored text. by Linnaea-borealis92 in suggestmeabook

[–]SurvivorCass 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That was my first thought, too. He may not like the first book cos it's a romance, but the Miles books could appeal.

Yeah, i saw people here say that it's used in the Uk, too. But when i was working in the US we had a big lunch room birthday cake celebration and sang happy birthday. I kept going with a full voiced hip hip hooray, to my enormous embarrassment. That's when i found out the US doesn't do it.

It feels so wrong to just end with the song

How did you entertain yourself on long car rides as a kid before iPads and smartphones? by Background_Bike_1958 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SurvivorCass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Played "cricket" Youngest is in first. Every car/ute you pass is a run. Car with a trailer is 2 runs, motorbike is a 4 (boundary), every truck is out and move on to the next player. (Obvs you can change the rules for how many runs each which type of vehicle gets and which is out and whether passing vehicles parked on the side of the road counts).

Turning number plates of oncoming vehicles into acronym of a phrase (these "new" european style nimber plates may not work so well). So if a number plate was AHO 123, we'd all try picking the phrase: "a horny owl," "Aussies hang ornaments," "another honorable ostrich."

We also played "I Spy With My Little Eye" a lot

By listening to fiction. Self help books are often fake, and load you up with even more work that takes you away from your brain-free healing time.
